I sincerely downt that eating one meal a day with a snack at bedtime
would be recommended by any doctor, endocrinologist, or dietician for a
diabetic patient.

I never said it was approved or recommended. I said thats my life. I
keep my numbers in the 70 to 100 range so it works for me. I am not
worried too much about losing weight at this point, as the 25 pounds
isnt that big a deal to me. I am 60 years old and have eaten this way my
whole adult life. I just eat smarter now

I misunderstood the 6 hour thing, sorry*G*

This is a quote straight from the Byetta website FAQ:

" You should inject BYETTA twice daily - once before your morning and
evening meals (or before the two main meals of the day, at least 6 hours or
more apart). After each injection, you should eat your meal anytime during
the following 60 minutes. To view an interactive tutorial that demonstrates
how to use the BYETTA Pen, click here."

My interpretation of that is to eat within 1 hour (I like to eat within the
first 15 minutes), and to make sure you have separated the injections by at
least 6 hours. I shoot in the morning just before I eat breakfast around 8,
eat lunch around 12, and eat supper around 5 or 6, right after I inject my
second Byetta dose. It seems to work well for me. No nausea.

What I have done in the past, under my doctors watchful eagle eye, was to
<!--more-->
inject the 5 pen before each meal, rather than use the 10 pen twice a day.
The ten pen was making my blood sugars drop too low after the evening dose.
This regime worked for about 6 or 7 months, and then I had to drop the lunch
dose due to low blood sugars. I take the 5 pen twice a day now, and am doing
pretty good with it. My next doctor's appointment is in 3 weeks, so I'll
know more then. He seems to really think that the Byetta is improving my
Beta Cells in my pancreas to the point that I need less Byetta than
originally, and that's a huge bonus in my book. Hope this helps.

Cheryl from Florida

when i called byetta, they said if i eat, i need to wait just 1 hour
before taking byetta.

I wonder how one can take the byetta with 6 hours between eating and
still eat the small meals some seem to need. In a previous post someone
stated 6 hours was too long to go between meals, but that is what the
Byetta people say is optimum.
Of course we are all different, I only eat one meal a day with a snack
in the evening. That is how I have always eaten and I have figured my
diabetes routine around that. I really dont like to eat often and dont
eat much at my main meal.
Just curious how so many meals works with the dosing of the Byetta.

What I failed to note in my post on my six-day eating plan to overcome a
long plateau is that after two days my BG's started dropping considerably
and some days I have only taken one shot (with the meal I had the potato or
yam).

No, the Byetta people do not say that six hours is optimum to go between
meals - they say that six hours is the minimum to go between Byetta
injections. Most diabetics still do best when eating a snack between
meals. I sincerely downt that eating one meal a day with a snack at bedtime
would be recommended by any doctor, endocrinologist, or dietician for a
diabetic patient.

I have been frustrated because I am one of those who have not lost weight as
<!--more-->
a result of Byetta (though I have lost as a result of a better eating plan
and 30 minutes of exercise a day). A week ago I decided I decided I had sat
at a 3-month weight loss plateau for too long and decided to shake things up
a bit to try and stoke my metabolism. I really have been doing the right
things - eating every 3 hours - and not eating 'white' - but I do eat some
processed foods and go out to lunch several times a week.

So, this is day 4 of a 6-day eating plan shake-up. As usual, I have eaten 5
- 6 times a day - but about the same amount of calories with each meal.
Each meal has included protein and complex carbs but in much
smaller portions. For six days I am giving up any added sodium, processed
foods (which are sodium packed), restaurant meals, dairy, and fat (including
healthy olive oil). Basically I've been eating grilled chicken breasts
(hard to do without oil!), tilapia, and grilled 2-oz turkey patties. I've
used Ms. Dash for all seasoning. Each day with dinner I've either had a
small red potato or 1/2 a yam. Brown rice would be okay but I found I
absolutely could not eat that without butter or salt. With every meal I
either had a salad with spritzed lemon juice, or cucumber slices and carrots
(preferred).

This morning I had dropped five pounds which I am sure is due to the reduced
sodium (I was amazed at how much sodium I was getting in processed foods).
I was also trying to do no caffiene but I have allowed myself some tea in
the morning. I miss having some soda so have been drinking Diet Rite (0
cal, 0 sodium, 0 fat, 0 caffiene). I also kicked my exercise time up from
30 minutes to 45. I did not add anymore water as I am already drinking
eight bottles every day.

As far as being hungry - not once have I been hungry as I know my next
'meal' is 3 hours away. It has only been hard for me because I really
missed using olive oil.

Saturday I will go back to eating lo-fat dairy, some olive oil (and healthy
nuts and PB), and double-fiber bread. But I will continue I think I will
drop at least two more pounds and should be able to keep most of it off
which will have the effect of getting me beyond that weight loss plateau. I
have learned that I can do okay low sodium. Instead of eating a whole slice
of bread with PB for a snack - I will probably try eating 1/2 a slice. I've
always loved my homemade yogurt parfait for breakfast - but will try 1/2
portion size.

Anyway, much of this was irrelevant to the topic, but thought I would share
what has worked for me this week if anyone else is 'doing everything right'
and still stuck at a plateau.

Hi Ruby:

I think they are saying to go six hours between shots and I'm wondring if
that could be reduced to 5 hours because I would like to try going on 3 5mcg
shots a day. Otherwise it's fine to have an afternoon snack as long as your
<!--more-->
stomach is empty fro two hours before the dinner shot. It's also fine to have
a snack i nthe evening and/or at bedtime. I do much better eating three
small meals and two snacks....it keeps your sugar eve nand your metabolism
turned
on.

I didnt have any problems when going on Metformin either, back when it
was brand new*G*
I was started on 1/2 a 500 tablet and then worked up. I think doctors
are starting people on too big a dose and that is why there are so many
having GI problems.
One doc started a resident where I work, on 1000 x2!!!!!!!! Poor guy
was pooping his pants all day long. I finally convinced them to ask the
doc to lower the dose and work up to the higher one. Resident felt much
better*G* I am the only diabetic on staff so they are always coming to
me to figure things out. They had an insulin vial that they couldnt get
any insulin out of. come to find out they werent shooting air into the
bottle. I shot it full of air and they used the rest of the vial. Scary!!!
