Byetta and too sick to eat?

Hi,
I’ve been on Byetta for about a month now, and it’s been great for my
numbers. But what to do when it’s time for your dose and you don’t feel up
to eating?

Seems like I have fallen apart in the last couple months! LOL, first it was
pneumonia. Then when I got over that I began having a bunch of other
symptoms - nausea, lots of belching, pain in my upper right abdomen just
under the rib cage, when severe radiating around my side and ribcage and up
my back to just below the right shoulder blade. The pain comes and goes,
though lately seems to be coming more than going. The doctor feels the
symptoms sound like gallbladder, but so far I’ve had blood tests, CT scan,
ultrasound, gastroscopy, colonoscopy - and nothing showing anything
conclusive. This week I have to have a test called a HIDA-scan.

But meanwhile, here it is time for my Byetta dose, and I just don’t feel
like I can eat anything. My abdomen hurts and I feel nauseous. But I
certainly can’t dose myself with Byetta on an empty stomach! Has anyone else
faced this sort of situation? Any ideas about the best way to handle it?

Debbie

    Debbie:

I used to get the kind of pain you describe under my rib cage and my upper
back and after a lot of tests and one useless hospitalization ( it mimics heart
disease) I was diagnosed with cosochondritis. It’s caused by inflamation

between the ribs and breast bone and it can get infected or flare up just
like arthritis does and then disappear at other times. It also causes
inflamation in the upper chest and can trigger asthma and difficulty breathing.
    I
suspect that in my case it was also caused by belly fat interfering with my
colon and the postion of my inner organs. That’s why I am so determined to keep
losing the weight….it’s a killer… Don’t know if this helps or is true fro
you but it’s something to think about. I’ve been doing a lot of reading
about inflamation and how it is at the root of so many of our illnesses. Hope
you feel better and get some answers. Suzanne

    Try a cup of ginger tea? Or eat something light and bland - dry carbs;
    toast etc?
Yeah, I do know what you mean -

Hmm, never heard of it! That’s the darn trouble. So many possible things out
there, and we don’t know about many of them until they hit us. Like, my dad
who had surgery for NPH last year. Never heard of it until *his* case. I’m
always glad to get additional ideas.

Yikes, I have darn serious belly fat too. I’m trying to lose weight but it
is so *hard*. And of course keeping it off is harder! I’ve probably lost
1000 pounds over the last 25 years since I first began to gain weight after
    knee surgery. :-)

Yes indeed, and I really appreciate that.

*I read a book in June that dealt just with the inflammation issue. It is
an area that I am working to address.*

    Hi Debbie:

Didn’t mean to scare you; just the opposite. I wanted to let you know that
the pain you were describing could be caused by a fairly benign thing. What I
get is a kind of arthritis that occurs beneath the ribs and the breast bone.
It hurts but isn’t life threatening…the belly fat can be very destructive
but the good news is that we don’t have to be thin. sometimes just 20 to 30

The symptoms you mentioned sound soooo familiar to me..though the
gallbladder was the first thing i thought of as well another thought
was Pancreatitis. I started belching and having a dull pain aroung
the sternum, ribcage area for three days, thought it was
stress…then on the 4th day the pain was more severe and i was
extremely nausous(sp)and actually started vomitting. I got a little
clammy then when i couldn’t take the pain anymore (3hrs) I went to
the ER and was told i was having a pancreas attack. I described it
like having a gallbladder attack, but i had already had it removed.
I stayed in the hospital for 6days, no food or drink only iv’s and
pain med. Mr. Dr believes my tryglicerides were too high, I
constantly have over a 2000 reading. Currently i have 2292 and normal
is below 200. Well that was my 2cents. Hope you feel better!!
