Is anyone else only using byetta to bring their numbers down?
Just wondering.

hi
have you had any issues with late at night your blood sugar drops
and you start feeling sick and need to eat?
i normally take my shot about 6 or 7pm before dinner and started

sugar and it’s dropping. not that it’s official "low" but it’s low
for me. so i’ve started planning a midnight snack to help.
i know diabetes is very personal and is different for everyone but

my first month. Right now I’m happy with my numbers. I have lost 19 pounds
in this month (though I think a lot of this is due to all my problems I’m

I discussed byetta with my doctor back in June when I went to see her
because of health issues I was having (had pneunomia as it turned out) and
my morning fasting BG was close to 300 at the time! And two hours
post-prandial was well over 200.
After a month on byetta my 2-hour numbers are now running between 114-134,
and my fasting BG is nicely under 200. Was 144 this morning which I think is
my best yet, so all is headed in the right direction.
I have not had any super lows except when I gave the 10 mcg a try and my BG
dropped to about 50. But nothing like that on the 5 mcg. Interesting reading
about the panic attacks though. I have suffered from panic attacks on and
off for years - but the worst of them were some 20 years ago, long before
I was diabetic. I do have them very sporadically now but quite minor
compared to back then, and I never correlated it with BG levels in any way.
I think I have had the panic attacks you have talked about. I was
vacationing in Oklahoma and I was shopping with a friend. As I was
walking out the door, I started to get lightheaded and began to pass
out! I almost hit the floor and caught myself. I then felt my heart
begin to race and my chest and arms started hurting! Needless to
say, I went to the hospital and my heart was fine! The ER doctor
said that he felt as though I had a huge sugar drop, which caused the
feeling of almost passing out and then I had a PANIC ATTACK! That is
what caused the heart to race and my body reacted to the panic! I
have had panic attacks in the past, but hadn’t had one in awhile
until this! I have only been on Byetta since December as well as
2500 of Metformin. My blood sugar is fair. I need to eat better.
It would be better if I ate better! I have lost between 25 and 30
pounds. I am sick every day from nausea after the Byetta. I am
going to the doctor on Thursday and we’ll see what he says. I am now
trying all the suggestions from everyone. I am trying Ginger Snaps,
the Sea Bands and Prilosec. I have a feeling that I will just live
with the nausea. It’s almost like morning sickness. My evening shot
doesn’t make me as sick. So…..yes, I have had panic attacks as
well! I am still learning, but I think it will all work out!
Thanks Jennifer, for that info. That is EXACTLY what happened to
me! My doctor never warned me about it, so now I know! I will tell
him when I visit him on Thursday. Thanks for the info! I will start
keeping some raisins with me at all times!

Hi Stacy:
I agree with Char…..I would have a protein snack at three and again before
bed time. It can be a lttle PB on half a light, high fiber, english muffin
or half a cup of low fat yogurt with berries or some light cheese and high
fiber crackers. If it’s a high fiber and protein snack it isn’t going to put
weight on you. Some people do really well eating five small meals….it keeps
the metabolism reved….Suzanne
I am going to call my Dr tomorrow. I think I just need to spread my eating out.
The problem is that I don’t get up until around 10am. I take my synthroid then
can’t take any meds or eat for an hour. I take Byetta and Metformin around noon
eat a small meal, and then eat dinner around 7 again with a dose of Byetta and
Metformin. I don’t know if I should eat more, or reduce the Metformin, but I
definitely have to fix this, because getting sick every afternoon is definitely
not working for me.
Here are a couple of examples of meals for me:
Lunch:
a.. Shrimp Scampi
b.. Eggs (maybe with a bit of bacon or sausage)
c.. Small Salad
d.. Celery with all natural organic peanut butter
Dinner:
a.. Various forms of Chicken breast with green beans
b.. Small salad
c.. two hamburgers without buns and with slices of tomato or sauteed onion
I don’t drink any soda or caffeine at all, and only drink water and crystal
light.
I ocasionally have a snack of sunflower seeds or a piece of chees around 9-10pm
since I stay up until about 1am each night.
Obviously I eat very low carb. Any suggestions for no carb/low carb mid day
snacks??

Low carb snacks - low/no fat cheese or turkey or some other protein wrapped
in lettuce. celery with laughing cow cheese or peanut butter (as Nita
mentioned), a cup of homemade veggie broth with some tofu or other protein.
You really should be eating a small snack in between meals. PB on celery is
always a good snack. PB on 1/2 of a slice of double fiber bread is good.

the reason i say i’m having panic attacks is that besides those
symptoms, i cry almost every time, get angry at everyone, have this
fight or flight issue (threaten to leave my husband). i also
noticed i get shortness of breath which causes terrible coughing.
You are going to talk to your doctor about them soon, right? They do sound
like classic hypoglycemic attacks - and that’s so dangerous.

actually i did today and yes she thinks they are all just from sugar
dropping too quick or too low. i’m going to try eating every 3
hours (well 3 hours after i eat i’ll eat something again). last
night ate at 11pm at 5am woke up in starts of panic attack. didn’t
last as long cause i was trying to stop it. should have just eaten
at 5am instead of waiting. i wont do that again, bought a timer
that i can easily just say "go off in 3 hours"
You will lose weight if you eat according to your meter. Just eat healthy
calories. Maybe using apples and peanut butter to keep your blood sugar up.
You could eat whole grain crackers and cheese or cheese sticks. I like laughing
cow cheese and whole grain crackers. I read South Beach and lost weight on
that. I need to commit to it again. You can do both what is good for your
diabetes is also good for your body.

no, just byetta at the moment. although she did want me to try
metformin again if the eating every 3 hours doesn’t help. actually
last night seemed to work except i had an IC flare. i’m going to try
this for a week to see if it keeps my drops under control. also i am
still learning the early warning signs so i can stop it before it
starts.
gave my husband something yesterday, woke up from nap, was freezing
and confused, couldn’t think what i needed to do. i took a glucose
tablet because i didn’t want to eat and within 15-20 min i felt
better. i called him (he was in shop) and said "if i ever sound like
that again, indecisive, confused, i need to stop my sugar from
dropping so fast"
yes, always check my levels because i need to see where it is.
normally it’s dropping. it’s not that it’s low (although that has
happened) it’s dropping that’s causing the issues.
i have looked at the byetta too. since i’ve been eating every 2-1/2
to 3 hours i’ve actually already lost 2 lbs in 2 days that i had
regained and feel much more "even". but i still keep getting these
headaches when it starts dropping too fast for me. last night it
dropped 50 points in less then 20 min and i knew something was wrong
cause i had a severe headache and my head felt like it stuffed up.
although some of these could be allergy it’s too much a coincidence
of when they are happening.
I wonder how one can take the byetta with 6 hours between eating and
still eat the small meals some seem to need. In a previous post someone
stated 6 hours was too long to go between meals, but that is what the
Byetta people say is optimum.
Of course we are all different, I only eat one meal a day with a snack
in the evening. That is how I have always eaten and I have figured my
diabetes routine around that. I really dont like to eat often and dont
eat much at my main meal.
Just curious how so many meals works with the dosing of the Byetta.

Hi Ruby:
I think they are saying to go six hours between shots and I’m wondring if
that could be reduced to 5 hours because I would like to try going on 3 5mcg
shots a day. Otherwise it’s fine to have an afternoon snack as long as your
stomach is empty fro two hours before the dinner shot. It’s also fine to have
a snack i nthe evening and/or at bedtime. I do much better eating three
small meals and two snacks….it keeps your sugar eve nand your metabolism
turned
on.
<< I wonder how one can take the byetta with 6 hours between eating and

No, the Byetta people do not say that six hours is optimum to go between
meals - they say that six hours is the minimum to go between Byetta
injections. Most diabetics still do best when eating a snack between
meals. I sincerely downt that eating one meal a day with a snack at bedtime
would be recommended by any doctor, endocrinologist, or dietician for a
diabetic patient.
I have been frustrated because I am one of those who have not lost weight as
a result of Byetta (though I have lost as a result of a better eating plan
and 30 minutes of exercise a day). A week ago I decided I decided I had sat
at a 3-month weight loss plateau for too long and decided to shake things up
a bit to try and stoke my metabolism. I really have been doing the right
things - eating every 3 hours - and not eating ‘white’ - but I do eat some
processed foods and go out to lunch several times a week.
So, this is day 4 of a 6-day eating plan shake-up. As usual, I have eaten 5
- 6 times a day - but about the same amount of calories with each meal.
Each meal has included protein and complex carbs but in much
smaller portions. For six days I am giving up any added sodium, processed
foods (which are sodium packed), restaurant meals, dairy, and fat (including
healthy olive oil). Basically I’ve been eating grilled chicken breasts
(hard to do without oil!), tilapia, and grilled 2-oz turkey patties. I’ve
used Ms. Dash for all seasoning. Each day with dinner I’ve either had a
small red potato or 1/2 a yam. Brown rice would be okay but I found I
absolutely could not eat that without butter or salt. With every meal I
either had a salad with spritzed lemon juice, or cucumber slices and carrots
(preferred).
This morning I had dropped five pounds which I am sure is due to the reduced
sodium (I was amazed at how much sodium I was getting in processed foods).
I was also trying to do no caffiene but I have allowed myself some tea in
the morning. I miss having some soda so have been drinking Diet Rite (0
cal, 0 sodium, 0 fat, 0 caffiene). I also kicked my exercise time up from
30 minutes to 45. I did not add anymore water as I am already drinking
eight bottles every day.
As far as being hungry - not once have I been hungry as I know my next
‘meal’ is 3 hours away. It has only been hard for me because I really
missed using olive oil.
Saturday I will go back to eating lo-fat dairy, some olive oil (and healthy
nuts and PB), and double-fiber bread. But I will continue I think I will
drop at least two more pounds and should be able to keep most of it off
which will have the effect of getting me beyond that weight loss plateau. I
have learned that I can do okay low sodium. Instead of eating a whole slice
of bread with PB for a snack - I will probably try eating 1/2 a slice. I’ve
always loved my homemade yogurt parfait for breakfast - but will try 1/2
portion size.
Anyway, much of this was irrelevant to the topic, but thought I would share
what has worked for me this week if anyone else is ‘doing everything right’
and still stuck at a plateau.
What I failed to note in my post on my six-day eating plan to overcome a
long plateau is that after two days my BG’s started dropping considerably
and some days I have only taken one shot (with the meal I had the potato or
yam).
I wonder how one can take the byetta with 6 hours between eating and
still eat the small meals some seem to need. In a previous post someone
stated 6 hours was too long to go between meals, but that is what the

diabetes routine around that. I really dont like to eat often and dont

Just curious how so many meals works with the dosing of the Byetta.
This is a quote straight from the Byetta website FAQ:
" You should inject BYETTA twice daily - once before your morning and
evening meals (or before the two main meals of the day, at least 6 hours or
more apart). After each injection, you should eat your meal anytime during
the following 60 minutes. To view an interactive tutorial that demonstrates
how to use the BYETTA Pen, click here."
My interpretation of that is to eat within 1 hour (I like to eat within the
first 15 minutes), and to make sure you have separated the injections by at
least 6 hours. I shoot in the morning just before I eat breakfast around 8,
eat lunch around 12, and eat supper around 5 or 6, right after I inject my
second Byetta dose. It seems to work well for me. No nausea.
What I have done in the past, under my doctors watchful eagle eye, was to
inject the 5 pen before each meal, rather than use the 10 pen twice a day.
The ten pen was making my blood sugars drop too low after the evening dose.
This regime worked for about 6 or 7 months, and then I had to drop the lunch
dose due to low blood sugars. I take the 5 pen twice a day now, and am doing
pretty good with it. My next doctor’s appointment is in 3 weeks, so I’ll
know more then. He seems to really think that the Byetta is improving my
Beta Cells in my pancreas to the point that I need less Byetta than
originally, and that’s a huge bonus in my book. Hope this helps.

I never said it was approved or recommended. I said thats my life. I
keep my numbers in the 70 to 100 range so it works for me. I am not
worried too much about losing weight at this point, as the 25 pounds

I think I have had the panic attacks you have talked about. I was
I am still learning, but I think it will all work out!
vacationing in Oklahoma and I was shopping with a friend. As I was
walking out the door, I started to get lightheaded and began to pass
So…..yes, I have had panic attacks as
well!

Thanks Jennifer, for that info. That is EXACTLY what happened to
me! My doctor never warned me about it, so now I know! I will tell
him when I visit him on Thursday. Thanks for the info! I will start
keeping some raisins with me at all times!

I have panic attacks when my sugar gets low. I am working on a way to fix
the low sugar. I am consistently hitting the low 70’s and sometimes 60 in
the afternoon between 4 and 6. Hubby says I need to eat more but I want to
lose weight!!

Any suggestions for no carb/low carb mid day
snacks??

You really should be eating a small snack in between meals. PB on celery is
always a good snack. PB on 1/2 of a slice of double fiber bread is good.

Low carb snacks - low/no fat cheese or turkey or some other protein wrapped
in lettuce. celery with laughing cow cheese or peanut butter (as Nita
mentioned), a cup of homemade veggie broth with some tofu or other protein.

the reason i say i’m having panic attacks is that besides those
symptoms, i cry almost every time, get angry at everyone, have this
fight or flight issue (threaten to leave my husband). i also
noticed i get shortness of breath which causes terrible coughing.

You are going to talk to your doctor about them soon, right? They do sound
like classic hypoglycemic attacks - and that’s so dangerous.

actually i did today and yes she thinks they are all just from sugar
dropping too quick or too low. i’m going to try eating every 3
hours (well 3 hours after i eat i’ll eat something again). last
night ate at 11pm at 5am woke up in starts of panic attack. didn’t
last as long cause i was trying to stop it. should have just eaten
at 5am instead of waiting. i wont do that again, bought a timer
that i can easily just say "go off in 3 hours"
i do have appt with endocrinologist too on aug 27

You will lose weight if you eat according to your meter. Just eat healthy
calories. Maybe using apples and peanut butter to keep your blood sugar up.
You could eat whole grain crackers and cheese or cheese sticks. I like laughing
cow cheese and whole grain crackers. I read South Beach and lost weight on
that. I need to commit to it again. You can do both what is good for your
diabetes is also good for your body.

no, just byetta at the moment. although she did want me to try
metformin again if the eating every 3 hours doesn’t help. actually
last night seemed to work except i had an IC flare. i’m going to try
this for a week to see if it keeps my drops under control. also i am
still learning the early warning signs so i can stop it before it
starts.
gave my husband something yesterday, woke up from nap, was freezing
and confused, couldn’t think what i needed to do. i took a glucose
tablet because i didn’t want to eat and within 15-20 min i felt
better. i called him (he was in shop) and said "if i ever sound like
that again, indecisive, confused, i need to stop my sugar from
dropping so fast"
i just have to figure this out.
July 30th, 2007 at 4:04 am
yes, always check my levels because i need to see where it is.
normally it’s dropping. it’s not that it’s low (although that has
happened) it’s dropping that’s causing the issues.
i have looked at the byetta too. since i’ve been eating every 2-1/2
to 3 hours i’ve actually already lost 2 lbs in 2 days that i had
regained and feel much more "even". but i still keep getting these
headaches when it starts dropping too fast for me. last night it
dropped 50 points in less then 20 min and i knew something was wrong
cause i had a severe headache and my head felt like it stuffed up.
although some of these could be allergy it’s too much a coincidence
of when they are happening.

I do much better eating three
small meals and two snacks….it keeps your sugar eve nand your metabolism
turned
on.

July 31st, 2007 at 2:45 am
What I failed to note in my post on my six-day eating plan to overcome a
long plateau is that after two days my BG’s started dropping considerably
and some days I have only taken one shot (with the meal I had the potato or
yam).

when i called byetta, they said if i eat, i need to wait just 1 hour
before taking byetta.

I am not
worried too much about losing weight at this point, as the 25 pounds
isnt that big a deal to me. I am 60 years old and have eaten this way my
whole adult life. I just eat smarter now
I misunderstood the 6 hour thing, sorry*G*
