Sick!

Hello y’all! I am a 45 year old somewhat beginner of Byetta. I have
just joined a few weeks ago. Today I was flying out of town. My
flight was at 6:30AM so I waited till I got to the airport to give
myself my shot. I decided to get a meal at McDonalds because it was
the only thing open! I ate a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit, hash
brown and orange juice. I have been struggling with the nauseau
since I started Byetta in December of 2006. I have it almost every
day and it’s worse in the mornings. I bought the Sea Bands and put
them on this morning. I have tried Ginger Ale and Ginger Snaps. I
still have the sick stomach! Well……this morning, I got on the
flight and about half way through the flight, I started feeling
sick! I lost my entire breakfast in the airplane restroom! I am
thinking that WHAT I ate had more effect than anything! McDonalds
breakfast no longer appeals to me - to say the least!!! Do you guys
get sicker with the type of food you eat? What would be a good

choice to eat for breakfast with my shot? Maybe the shot with
combination of bad food and the motion of the plane made me sick???
I wish the sick feeling would go away. I have told my doctor and he
offered to give me medicine for the nausea, but I am already taking
2500 mg of ER Metformin, Synthroid, Pravachol and was just recently
put on Coreg for blood pressure. I have lost almost 35 pounds and I
really don’t want to stop the Byetta. It’s almost like I will take
the sickness to be able to lose the weight. I have lost about a
pound a week. I am nervous that the weight loss will stop. I guess
as long as I have the sick stomach, I will probably still have the
weight loss! LOL! Any suggestions?

Today was just my third week on Byetta and I switched to the 10 mcg last
night. I get a headache about an hour after taking the shot and somtimes I get
dizzy…but no nausea. I may just be one of the lucky ones but I have lost
ten pounds and have started feeling the appetite suppressing effect again today
after it had disappeared last week. I also hope to lose a pound, even two a
week but I am very careful about what and how much I eat. I’ve heard several
people say that meat and greasy food will make them sick. I tend to

alternate a strawberry and Whey breakfast shake or oatmeal and soy milk, or a
    high
fiber english muffin with low fat swiss cheese and I get a very clear message
when I am full and stop eating then, even if it is mid bite. So, yes I think
we are all different but my stomach is happiest when I eat high fiber, low
fat protein ( eggs, tofu, chicken turkey and fish) and fruits and veggies.
Actually I do the weight watchers Core Program on my own and find it provides
some good guidelines. The Byetta is making it possible for me to stay on
program and lose which I couldn’t do when I was taking a lot of insulin, but I
    don’tthink I would keep losing if I weren’t dieting. Weight loss isn’t a given
for me. At any rate, eating at the airport sounds like it was a challenge. I
would experiment with different foods and listen to what your body is telling
you. BTW You can get ginger slices; the kind that’s served with sushi and is
sugar free in the international food section of most grocery stores. I
admire your determination. I don’t know how long I could stay on Byetta if I
    were

I can tell you when ever since Byetta I can not eat bacon. And when I
first started just the smell of it made me throw-up. You will just have
to see what you can handle. We are all different.

A whole biscuit, hash browns, and oj? To me, that is a big breakfast.
While generally that is the kind of food I would never eat, if that was my
only option, I would have eat half the biscuit and half the juice. That is
really plenty of calories for most people for a meal. Our old habits die
    hard.

A better option at McDonalds would have been their yogurt fruit parfait with
granola. Less calories, less fat, and the yogurt would soothe your stomach

    vs making you get sick.

You really do not want your weight loss to come about as the result of a
sick stomach, but taking the time to plan so you can make better food
    choices.

just my opinion, but i think the whole biscuit and the oj, made your sugar go
way up and then crash down really fast .. therefore the sickness….
i have not actually drank any oj but one time when i got real low since March
when i found out i was a diabetic.. 4 oz is a serving and i love oj too much to
    tease myself…
better choice for mcdonalds would be an english muffin, sasuage, egg and
cheese.. that is exactly what i was given in the hospital..well not mcdonalds
    but their food..
a serving of the sliced apples, no carmel.. and a glass of water or bottle
    would be a good breakfast..
i hope you get to feeling better…
though the byetta does cause some nauesa(sp??) in some.. more like your GI
problems are from the metformin.. maybe you can decrease them or split them up
in takin them..i take 2 with supper and then 2 before i go to bed.. coz all 4 at
one time just about kill me off…

make sure you talk to you doc or diabetes specialist.. they can help you out
so you are not sick all the time…
    god bless ya

I have been on a very low carb diet to keep my diabetes under control, and the

not used to finding healthier alternatives, I had a big cheeseburger and fries.
I was SO sick. I now know that staying the course on this diet is the way for
    me:-)

I completely understand. Aim for progress, not perfection.

I’ve been at this for 8 years and it took a long time before the
changes became second nature. I’m a big proponent of "test test
test", using your meter to learn about how you and this disease are
    co-existing.

Let me know if you want me to post my testing plan.

    All the best,

*** I find that it’s not enough to eat low carb. I only have success at
weight loss when I eat low carb and low fat. I know I’ve said this before but
the Weight watchers Core plan is a good guide for me. The only carbs I ever
eat have five or more grams of fiber. I also work out in the pool and swim
three days a week. If you have access to a YMCA with a warm water pool it’s
the best and safest place to exercise, especially for those of us with too much
weight. You can get a good work out without putting any stress on the

Thanks for the testing plan, Jennifer. I’m used to testing first thing in
the morning and before meals and bedtime from when I was taking insulin. I’ve
started testing two hours after meals since starting on Byetta and that is my
lowest sugar..around 110- 130. My morning sugar is still around 200 even if
I take 15 mg of Lantus before bed. I’m hoping that will improve as my
weight comes down. It occurred to me to ask my doctor for a small dose of
metformin instead of the Lantus but in the past when I tried it I felt really
sick…..but that was before I had Prilosec. I don’t know what to think. I
    suspect
that taking insulin with Byetta is kind of defeating the purpose of the
Byetta in terms of training the pancreas to make Beta cells and release
appropriate amounts of insulin after eating. Any thoughts on taking insulin
    with
byetta….is that working for anyone? I have adapted nicely to the 10 mcg
    over

the weekend….just a mild headache…the appetite suppressing effect works
all day but I end up needing some will power at night…by about 9:00 PM I’m

    Hi Ramona:

It might lower my morning sugar but I think the Byetta will stop working; at
least the appetite supressing effect will dissapear. I really want to keep
losing weight and Lantus increases appetite and makes me gain weight. That’s

why I decided to stop taking insulin and try the Byetta in the first place. I
have an appointment with my doctor on Thursday and will see what he thinks.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Jennifer,

this was great. and although i’ve been reading this forum now for a
few month s(diagnosed feb 07) it was nice to read it again.

    stacy,

i did what jennifer suggests … test test test… what i found out
was that no matter how many carbs i eat, my blood sugar would shoot
up 100 points approximately with in an hour of eating and wouldn’t
start dropping until hour 4. i did more then 8 times a day testing
because the numbers weren’t "normal" like all the websites say it
should react. so for a short period of time i logged everything i
ate, drank, when i took my medicines (which would shoot my blood
sugar up) and what i did for exercise and every hour on the hour i’d

    test my blood sugar.

gave me great insight. my numbers before byetta averaged between
    180-295. now they normally don’t go over 200ish (when i’ve had a
    bad day).

    good luck :) linda
