Self-Blood Glucose Monitoring Yields No Significant Improved Control

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

These study results could have far reaching results for many of us. I think
insurance companies will use this as an excuse not to cover meters or strips
for NIDDM II.

Self-Blood Glucose Monitoring Yields No Significant Improved Control In
Non-Insulin Users With Type 2 Diabetes

Chicago, IL (June 26, 2007) - Regular self-monitoring of blood glucose, at
least by people with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin injections, did
not result in a clinically significant reduction in blood glucose control in
a year-long study, according to a report presented today at the American
Diabetes Association’s 67th Annual Scientific Sessions.

Lipid-lowering Drugs Protect Against Peripheral Diabetic Neuropathy

Australian Study Shows Statins and Fibrates Prevent One of Most Common
Diabetes Complications

Chicago, IL (June 22, 2007) - A major epidemiological study conducted over
eight years in Australia has shown that two classes of lipid-lowering
drugs - statins and fibrates - significantly lower the risk of developing
nerve damage known as peripheral sensory diabetic neuropathy, according to a
report presented today at the American Diabetes Association’s 67th Annual
Scientific Sessions.

"Statins and fibrates, drugs already highly recommended for people with type

Byetta @ lunch and dinner question…

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Hi,

I’m not really new here, but have been lurking and reading for some
time. This is a great group!

My story is that I was dx in Nov. 06. Started on Metformin. Byetta (5)
added in April. Moved to 10 in May. Had a terrible time with nausea
and just feeling terrible for the entire month. Numbers were good and
weight was down. Could not stand the "non-functioning life". Decided
to go back to Byetta 5, and now numbers are creeping up. But, I feel
good!

My question is this…
If I go back to the 10 and inject at lunch and dinner, is there a
better chance I will feel better with this timing???

no more spit for me

Monday, May 7th, 2007

saw dr today and we agreed that i don’t need to take byetta anymore.
for those who wonder, i take 2500mg of glucophage and now am up to 52
units of lantus at 8 am and then also at 10 pm. i eat really low carb
so when i don’t take byetta i really don’t spike or go high anyway.
i’ve been on byetta for over a year and only had the appetitie
supressant effect the first month or two. dr put me on phentermine a
few months back and i have lost over 20 pounds so far. my bg’s are
really good and i have novolog for a fast acting should we go out for
chinese food or something not so low carb.

i was only paying 50.00 for a 3 month supply of byetta and needles were
free but still it’s 50.00 for something that shows no result for me.
keep in mind i am an insulin dependent diabetic. i really wish the
stuff worked better for me. i never saw any consistancy.

Byetta with Metformin

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

The Byetta has been good for me but my numbers are still a little to
high. My DR. said I could try adding 500mg Metformine twice a day.
Do most of you who take Metformin take it before, after or with meals?
I am hopeing this will bring my morning fasting numbers down from the
180-190s. and get my a1c down from 6.7 ….

Another newbie question-consensus about "how much food is enough?"

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Ok, I’ve been trying on my own to lose weight, and have lost 72 lbs over the
last few years by following a fairly simple method which is basically:
about 9 AM - a fairly light breakfast
about 11 AM - a mid-morning snack
about 1-1:30 PM - a fairly substantial lunch (my main meal of the day)
about 6 PM - a small dinner
and usually that’s it. sometimes a very small snack around 8 PM if I’m
feeling very hungry.

But the key thing is keeping dinner small and eating early. My sister spent
a month with my last spring, and she made dinners every evening and expected
me to eat them with her! I didn’t eat any more volume-wise than usual (cut
back on my lunches) but did eat a *big* dinner instead of a small one, and
in that month gained back 10 pounds!

OT? recipe

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Here is a wonderful recipe I designed for my husband who is not fond
of things good for him. (It is also VERY cheap!)
Black-eyed peas have always been a staple in Southern homes, a pot
sitting on Granny’s stove top on one of the back burners (sitting
right next to the greens in the other pot on the other back burner!)
With a sheet of biscuits in the oven–you have lunch–dinner–supper.
Well black-eyed peas are full of fiber and protein, low in fat and
have all the other vitamins and minerals we need. They are very good
for diabetics–the fiber and protein/carb ration is nearly perfect!
But my husband thinks they are ‘ashy’. Not exactly sure what he means
by that, they are creamy textured beans. Which is why they do this
recipe so well. Now if you need to adjust the sodium levels in this–
by all means use low sodium juice or bouillion.
this is how I make ~~

Diabetes Study

Friday, May 4th, 2007

They are currently doing ten different studies on diabetic medications in
Houston. I felt like this might be a good time for me to do something like
this. From Dec - May my FBG ran between 94 - 102. My post-meal BG’s were
running around 118 - 130. Starting three weeks ago everything suddenly
changed - despite no change to my medication (Byetta 10 only) or my food
plan.

I have been very discouraged as I realize I will now need additional
medication to treat my diabetes. I cannot take Metformin due to severe
diarrhea (though I have not tried the extended release someone mentioned).

So, I’m going to check out the medication study. I will need some kind of
ensurance from them that I can stop if my numbers get more out of control.
Otherwise it might be interesting. They will provide all medication and
supplies (which I am assuming will include my test strips). You check in

Newbie and Nausea

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Hi All, I just joined the group today, and have been reading through
a bunch of the old posts. Well *some* of them. You’re a chatty
bunch. I’m a 55-yo female DXed with T2 in 2002. Both of my parents
were T2 also - though it was complications of Alzheimer’s my mom
died of, and my dad is still going strong at 79.

I’ve had serious weight issues ever since I destroyed the posterior
cruciate ligament in my left knee when I was 30. During that first
year after my surgery I put on 50 pounds and it has just crept up
and up and up till I reached my lifetime high right at the time of
my diabetes diagnosis. My doctor felt if I could lose weight it
would help me get my numbers under control, and I’ve been trying.
I’m down 70 pounds from my high but the numbers are still not so
great, so I asked to try Byetta.
