Diabetes Study
They are currently doing ten different studies on diabetic medications in
Houston. I felt like this might be a good time for me to do something like
this. From Dec - May my FBG ran between 94 - 102. My post-meal BG’s were
running around 118 - 130. Starting three weeks ago everything suddenly
changed - despite no change to my medication (Byetta 10 only) or my food
plan.
I have been very discouraged as I realize I will now need additional
medication to treat my diabetes. I cannot take Metformin due to severe
diarrhea (though I have not tried the extended release someone mentioned).
So, I’m going to check out the medication study. I will need some kind of
ensurance from them that I can stop if my numbers get more out of control.
Otherwise it might be interesting. They will provide all medication and
supplies (which I am assuming will include my test strips). You check in
with them once a month and they even pay you ($30 - $100/mo depending on the
particular study they assign you to). I think I will call my doctor’s
office this week to see if I have her support.

I know how discouraging it is when suddenly everything goes out of
whack. I was running an A1c of 5.6 for a couple of years, after
working hard to get out of the 7.0 - 7.5 range. I started on Byetta
last week and so far my blood sugars are coming down nicely and I’ve
had virtually no ill effects - a day or so feeling dizzy, nauseaous,
sleepy. My doctor told be that this is a progressive disease that
over time just gets harder to control - keep eating correctly and
talking to your doctor and/or nutritionist.
