Women’s Midlife Weight Key to Future Diabetes Risk

People carrying excess weight who aim to ward off diabetes should try to
lose the pounds before they reach middle age, Australian researchers
suggest.

A woman’s body mass index (BMI) in her late 40s was the strongest predictor
of her risk of developing diabetes over the next eight years, Dr. Gita D.
Mishra of the University of Queensland and her colleagues found.

On the other hand, there was no link between weight change in subsequent
years and the likelihood of becoming diabetic.

Once a Week???

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

I wonder how the WEEKLY Byetta will be for those of us who are very prone to the
nausea? I can’t even imagine having a WEEKLY dose injected all at once! (makes
me nauseated just to think of it!!)
Any ideas??

Disappointment

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

I’ve had to discontinue Byetta due to an allergic reaction. I have
hives and the itch is the most intense misery I’ve known!

I’m so disappointed because it was definitely helping with my blood
sugar control, and I’d also lost 5 pounds. (I’m sure the meds for the
allergy will put those pounds right back on me.)

I see my doctor in 2 weeks to re-evaluate my situation. I expect the
next step will be insulin.

Thanks for all the info and support from this group.

Once-Weekly Exenatide

Once-Weekly Exenatide Formulation Improves Glycemic Control and Body Weight
A new once-weekly formulation of exenatide improves glycemic control and
fosters weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a new
report.

Dr. Kim and colleagues studied the effects of once-weekly subcutaneous
administration of exenatide long-acting release (LAR) formulation for 15
weeks on glycemic parameters, weight, pharmacokinetics, safety, and
tolerability in 45 patients with type 2 diabetes.

Both doses of exenatide LAR (0.8 mg and 2.0 mg) significantly reduced
fasting plasma glucose and average daily blood glucose concentration,
the authors report, whereas both fasting plasma glucose and average
daily blood glucose concentration increased in the placebo group.

Two Questions

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

I have two questions for the group.

First, I am not seeing much weight loss with Byetta. Some of you seem to have
lost quite a bit in a short time. I have lost maybe 2-3 pounds in about 2 weeks.
I also am still feeling hungry, where most of you report a loss of hunger. I am
on the 5 mcg pen, with the short needles.  Anyone else in this situation? Any
thing that might help?

Second, when I test my blood sugar, most of my daytime readings are on the low
side, 70-100, but my fasting BS is still kind of high. It usually runs 120-140,
even without eating anything before bed. I also take Avandamet, twice a day. Any
suggestions to get the before breakfast BS in line?

Thanks in advance!
Cindy

[[Diabetes_And_Byetta] update on success of Byetta… A1C results

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Hello All, :) I haven’t posted in a bit but did want to share my feelings on insulin as well.
You asked if anyone else has felt this way about someday needing to go on
insulin….I did, I’m not on it and I probably don’t fully understand what all
it means to be on it. Perhaps that’s why I’ve always thought..’no way’ would I
go on insulin, but my Doctor sent me my A1C results back at the beginning of
March and it was 9.8! I had gotten down to 5.2 on healthy eating and working
out in the past right after I was diagnosed (2001) felt like I only took a bit
of time off of my healthy routine, but apparently it was several years. Thus
the high results of that A1C, along with my results, she mentioned needing to
make some drastic drug changes and suggested Actos (not her first choice of the
two) or a nightly dose of insulin. YIKES I thought…I’ve failed. :( I took
the letter she sent me in to her office and was already to say…NO WAY, lol
first off with Actos, I’ve heard about the weight gain, which is not the
direction I wanted to be going, and then the insulin suggestion made me feel as
