Byetta pen repalcement insurance story

Just thought I’d share a recent experience in case this happens to one of you
some day.

I’d only opened a new pen three days earlier when I wound up with blood drops
inside. I called the number on the Byetta package and they had a replacement
waiting at my local pharmacy (Safeway) within hours. Then this past Friday I
went in to get a refill and drop off a new prescription. The clerk, who knows
me by name, already had my records pulled up and sait "I’m sorry, Mr. French,
but it says here that you’ve exceded your prescription benefits (MAX BENE RXS
MET FOR INDIVIDUAL) and we’re unable to fill any prescriptions at this time.
You might want to contact your insurance provider."

I went to my car but it was too late. The regional Blue Cross office is in
Seattle and it’s already past 6p.m. there. I went home and got online to review
my policy information but couldn’t find anything stating that I had an Rx limit.

Now the only thing I could do was wait until Monday to contact Blue Cross.
Knowing that my medications run upward of $20K yearly, I worried all weekend
about which conditions I would let go untreated and what prescriptions would
save money by mail order or generics (I was amazed that I can get generic
Glucophage and Micronase at Wal*Mart and Target for $4 each!), and how I was
going to handle the knee surgery I’m scheduled for later this week if I was
unable to obtain pain medication during my recovery.

Well, to wrap up this tale, it turns out that the entire reason I was rejected
was not that my Rx plan had maxed out but that when Amlyn/Lilly provided me with
the free replacement pen, the pharmacy entered a different insurance code which
could not be refilled. So, the moral of my tale, if you ever find yourself
needing a replacement pen, be sure to remind your pharmacy to not change your
insurance information in their computer systems.
