Two Questions
I have two questions for the group.
First, I am not seeing much weight loss with Byetta. Some of you seem to have
lost quite a bit in a short time. I have lost maybe 2-3 pounds in about 2 weeks.
I also am still feeling hungry, where most of you report a loss of hunger. I am
on the 5 mcg pen, with the short needles. Anyone else in this situation? Any
thing that might help?
Second, when I test my blood sugar, most of my daytime readings are on the low
side, 70-100, but my fasting BS is still kind of high. It usually runs 120-140,
even without eating anything before bed. I also take Avandamet, twice a day. Any
suggestions to get the before breakfast BS in line?
Thanks in advance!

I started eating a half a cup of slow churn ice cream and 12 almonds. That has
lowered my am readings. I am thinking of trying fruit instead of the ice cream.
As for the weight loss I am not seeing much of that either. but I have noticed
that eating carbs causes more cravings for carbs. I still have to plan my food.

Cindy i really don’t have any advice…but i am in a similar
situation as well. Havn’t lost any weight, appetite returned after
the 2nd week. and mornig BS are 120-160. But other readings are ok.
I still haven’t made it to the 10 pen because i am appealing my
insurance because they will not cover Byetta. the $250 price is too
high for me so if it isn’t covered i dont know what i’ll do. But
most of the time i have a light snack about 2hrs before bed..this
could be causing the high, but i take metformin and actos before
bed. Hmm?

Cindy - The primary purpose of Byetta is to keep your BG at more
consistent levels - it seems like that the drug is doing that for you
- though you may need some additional med for the higher morning
readings - or, may need to make an adjustment to nighttime nutrition.
Your doctor should be able to help you with that.
I was diagnosed with diabetes last December and have been on Byetta 10
(all but the first month) for almost six months now. Any weight loss
I have is a direct result of exercise and nutrition changes. It
seemed like the first two weeks I was on Byetta I felt the drug gave
me some control - but I never had the nausea or abrupt weight loss or
sense of fullness that many describe. There is not a medication on
earth that has the exact same effect on every person - and Byetta is
no exception. I was so hoping to have the great weight loss effects
so many have had - it just doesn’t seem fair that some would get this
great benefit and others of us would not. But life has never been
about things being fair …..
I am grateful that my diabetes is under better control than
pre-Byetta. I joined Curves 15 months ago - about nine months before
my diabetes was diagnosed. I have lost 30 pounds since that time - at
a pretty consistent two pounds a month. I think it is great that you
have lost 2 - 3 pounds! - that is over .5 pound a week - so your
weight loss may be slow, but it certainly beats gaining weight!
Our medications - whether it helps us lose weight or not - must never
be an excuse not to do the right thing for this life sentence
diagnosis we share. We must exercise and eat nutritiously if we are

Cindy, like you I started on the 5mcg pen and the short pen needles. I,
too, did not notice any of the effects that everyone else referred to. At
least not until a Byetta rep gave me samples of the bigger pen needle (29ga
1/2") and it made all the difference in the world to me. I’m quite
overweight and the short needles were just getting the medicine into my skin
and not into my fat layer where they could be properly absorbed. If you
have excess body fat, you might suggest to your doctor to at least try you
on a few of the bigger needles to see if it makes a difference for you.
As for high morning sugars, my doctor has recommended that I do not eat
anything white at night but that pasta, potatoes, etc can be eaten during my
lunch meal if I choose to do so. He also has requested I not have a late
night snack but if I don’t have a small piece of fruit or some other healthy
snack around 10:30, I wake up ravenous in the middle of the night and would
be more prone to go raid the fridge for things I shouldn’t be having.
