‘Biggest Loser’ Fits In Smart Food, Exercise

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Erik Chopin smiles proudly when people call him a big loser.

Chopin, 36, lost 214 pounds to win NBC’s "Biggest Loser" competition last
season and in the process lost a lot of the health problems that accompany
obesity.

"I hadn’t been seeing a doctor. I was getting zero exercise, and my diet was
terrible," Chopin says. "When I got on the show, I had all the health
problems you expect at 407 pounds — high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
sleep apnea and high blood sugar."

Still, Chopin says he was "shocked" when he found out that he was developing
diabetes.

"The first thing they told us when we started was that most of us needed to

American Diabetes Association: Diabetes School Care Act Significant Step in
Meeting Medical and Educational Needs of Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, May 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The American Diabetes
Association (ADA) applauded the signing of the "Diabetes School Care Act,"
legislation that will help ensure that Indiana public schools are responsive
to the medical and educational needs of students with diabetes. Governor
Daniels signed the bill into law on Friday, May 4, 2007. The Association,
including volunteers throughout the State, was a primary backer of the
bipartisan legislation, which will allow school personnel to be trained in
diabetes care appropriate for the student and allow students with diabetes
to self manage their disease on school property. Diabetes management is

TO SARAH/TX: BYETTA/METFORMIN

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Diabetes_And_ByettaSARAH/TX:
I can’t answer all, and I have no clue abt insulin, I am only on Byetta 10
(recently switched from 5), BUT I CAN talk about the Metformin!
I had alot of diahreah with it, then she switched me recently to AVANDAMET…
she said it is easier on the stomach. It has something else in it with the
metformin. (There ARE other types of ‘metformin’ so if the one you are on
bothers you too much, ask abt alternatives.)
Why do you want your A1c to be in the "5’s", when it’s great to have it at 6.5
or less?
PS I had alot of nausea, ALOT, when switching from Byetta 5 to 10, but I found
that as long as I eat a good sized meal, not just a little br’fast of say, one
piece of toast, after abt a week, the bad nausea subsides and it’s do-able. But
I cannot handle it if I am not eating a ‘real meal’ … and I’m not a morning
br’fast eater, so I do my first Byetta for ‘brunch’ or lunch. Making sure I have
5 hrs in btwn that and my dinner injection.

iching

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

"The itching I am talking about is all over. And all day and night long.
I’ve recently been getting hives, too, on my arms, face and legs. And the
palms of my hands swell and itch and feel bruised.

Off Byetta for two days now and itching is much less. May be a coincidence,
but I’m staying off it until I see doctor."

In the trials there was a small fraction who became allergic to the hormone
after some time. Some so much that they had to stop using it. While for
the great majority it produces no response it is after all a non-human
hormone and like all things involving biology there is a range of reactions
to all substances. This is the reason food allergies develope and other
common things for which most people have no problem.

A few problems/issues/questions…

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

So I have a few problems.

I’m on the 5 unit dose of Byetta, and it works GREAT! actually,
sometimes a little too well. Sometimes 2-3 hours after a meal, I’ll
get a low of 62 or so. Which is very frustrating because if the meal
was dinner, then I eat a snack, and my BG goes up at bedtime. So THEN
my liver dumps glucose in the night and I wake up at 140. Does anyone
else have this problem? Suggestions? My liver dumps about 40 points
worth of glucose EVERY NIGHT. It’s not triggered by a low (I know,
because a couple of nights ago I tested every hour on the hour ALL
NIGHT, and it was fine until it started ramping up), so what I really
would like to be able to do is be at about 80 when I go to sleep,
that way I’m 120 when I wake up. This is the plan anyways, I don’t
know if it’ll work or not, but I want to try it.

HEART PROBLEMS……….

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

hello all, well, i went to my cardiologist today. he said they can find nothing
wrong with my heart. he said it was ok to start byetta again. if it starts
pounding again, he will put me on a heart holter monitor. he said sometimes with
the byetta and bs swings, there is an "adrenilin" effect which could have kicked
up my heart. i am going to try it again, but may just do once a day to start cuz
actually, i only eat one large meal a day and pick all night, so maybe if it
stops that urging at night, i’ll be good…will test my blood often…..see endo
on the 24th..baz

drug prices

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

"i have no insurance and my pay out of pocket..byetta is 285.00 a tube..
lantus is 165.00 a tube.. metformin is 45.00 and i take 4 of those a
day…. the market for diabetics is boomin.. and those butts

As mentioned before a florida mail order pharmacy has byetta for $199.99.

As for metformin, walmart started selling such generic drugs for $5 per
month. In my area many large pharmacy and grocery stores have adopted the
same pricing for generics.

Those without insurance can get drugs free or minimal cost, others here
have done this so they will no doubt provide the information. Walmart has
an inexpensive meter I’m told is as accurate as any and the strips are
something like $40 for 100.

Glucose Tabs, Etc.

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

I have an elderly friend who is diabetic and has gone into a coma twice so
is lucky to be alive. When I stayed at their house for a week when her BG
would start dropping her husband would bring her coke and have her sip on
that and that worked quicker than glucose tabs or candy. She always had
glucose tabs when she left the house but at home found that either regular
Coke or orange juice was the quickest acting.
