Avandia problems
I’ve been taking Avandamet(4/500) for about 2 years and never got my
A1C down below 6.5. I’ve been on Byetta 10mcg since last Dec and my
A1C is now at 5.5.
I spoke to my doctor today and he tried to convince me that staying on
Avandia was ok. He said that he had talked to the Avandia drug rep(I’m
sure he isn’t biased) and the doctor said he felt comfortable with
continuing to prescribe it. I felt otherwise and we are trying just
Metformin 500 twice a day(with the Byetta), for now.
Any opinions or thoughts on just Metformin with Byetta? Or about
Avandia, in light of the news?

*I think anyone taking Avandia should stay on it until they talk to their
doctor - which you did. In other words, people should not panic and just
quit taking it and have their BG’s rise which would not do them any good at
all.*

*I think the plan you presented to your doctor was a good one and I think it
is worth a try. Only your meter will tell you if it is enough - but give it
a little time. Some on this list have suggested the Metformin that is timed
release as having less gastric effects.*

I had extreme problems with swelling when I tried it 8
years ago so was switched to Actos successfully but
when my doctor needed to put me on Lyrica, I could not
fit into any of my shoes so went off the Actos and of
course, my blood sugars still aren’t back where they
should be so I might go on Januvia (maybe) I’m
beginning to think the only safe thing for diabetics
is insulin.

I’m confused - Lyrica caused you to have swelling in your feet? I’ve been
taking it for six months and it has not caused any swelling. I did not
realize that was a side effect.

If it were me, I would stop taking the Avandia. 43% increase in heart
disease or death is a large number. The increase was almost DOUBLED. To
me, why take the chance if your A1c is so good. My A1c is also at 5.5 on
the met with byetta. Avandia also causes weight gain for a lot of people
which is why i quit taking it. I mean the whole point of taking medicine is
to make you healthier. Why take a drug that compromises your health by
making you more unhealthy at the least by weight gain, or at the worse by
putting you at risk for losing your life. Doesn’t make sense to me.
