I am having the same problem with lows (sorry, I am WAY behind on my
e-mails, so forgive me for replying days after the fact). I have
tried to eat the way my dietician told me to, 30 carbs at dinner, and
if I don't have another 30 or so carbs as a snack 2 hours after
dinner then I'll end up in the 60s. I don't know how low it might
get, because when I'm in the 60s I tend to be frantic for sugar,
shaky, sweating, irratible, you know the drill. So I haven't let it
get lower than 62 before I fix it. So I eat, and then I eat again. I
don't like it though, because I wake up craving carbs, and I know
it's because I'm eating too many of them. I KNOW my body, and the
more carbs I eat, the more I want.
I can go from a BG of 120 or 140 before dinner, to a BG of 62 in 2
hours. It happens with breakfast too. Whichever meal is after a shot,
I have to eat 2 hours later. And not just something like a piece of
cheese, but CARBS!! Otherwise, I go low.

*No! You do not want to eat a lot... ever. But you need to find the right
balance of carbs and protein that work for you. For ME, if I eat only
protein, my BG goes up but that is not true for everyone in the group. For
ME, I find that 25-30 g of carb with my meals and 15 with my snacks usually
keeps my numbers good. But you have to find out for YOU. And, that goes
back to your meter being your best friend and the ONLY way to find out.*

<< i feel full but am afraid if i don't eat enough my bs will go low. and
what if you eat a little before the shot and then eat after the shot,
too? does that make it lower?..... >>

*You should not eat before your shot. Most people get sick if they do
that. It should be a minimum of one hour and preferably 2-3 since you last
ate before you have your injection. Yes, you do need to talk to the hotline
people.*

Signe

That's by biggest problem with Byetta. I went off it for about 2 months because
I could not stand the lows. I then gained back about 8 lbs of the 20 I had lost
and my BG went up. I gave in and got a refill of the 5mcg pen and on Wednesday
had another low of "62". It took 5 glucose tabs and a piece of chocolate pie to
get it back to normal. The amount of carbs/sugar I have to consume in order to
<!--more-->
avoid or raise the lows seems to defeat the point...

Mary - over what period of time did you consume the 5 glucose tabs. Since,
at 62, you most likely would not go into a coma - and it is definitely time
to treat it - did you take one glucose tab and wait 15 minutes, test, then
do another, etc ? I start treating a low when it gets below 72 - but I
would drink 2 oz of coke and then retest after 15 minutes. By being patient
with the time, usually by 4 oz - not that much coke - I would get above 80.
Then I would wait 30 minutes and check again and it would usually climb a
bit higher. Coke would have worked faster than chocolate pie.

I called the Byetta helpline and they said that you can eat immediately
after the shot, and that you should start eating before the 1 hour is
up, but beginning to eat after the hour, the Byetta will have less an
effect!
