Tips for Injections?

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Hi! I just joined this list today. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
about 6 wks. ago and had my 2nd Dr. visit yesterday. He prescribed
Byetta in addition to the Avandamet I am already on. The problem is I
am a BIG wimp. I almost faint just getting blood drawn. I really have
my doubts whether I will be able to give myself injections. I started
crying as soon as I got in my car at the doctors office. Do any of you
experienced Byetta users have any suggestions to help me get through
this? Thanks!

Waving Good-Bye

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Well, ladies and germs, I guess this is my farewell post…

Saw the doctor about my ITCHING and looks like I was right. I AM
allergic to the Byetta injections. Probably something in the solution,
a preservative or something, but allergic just the same.

He said he was surprised I kept up the injections for 2 1/2 months with
the itching I was having, especially the hives (which could have been
dangerous!), but now that I’ve been off the spit for 2 weeks+, the
itching and hives are TOTALLY gone. Can’t get more "on the money" than
that!

So…I guess I will bid a fond good-bye to all you Spit-lovers and wish
you well on your journey. Byetta is a fantastic tool in the fight
against Diabetes for those who can tolerate it. Good luck and I pray it

Avandamet, etc

(kinda long, sorry)
Hi all,
Glad to be on this list and hear from others’ experience.
I’ve been on Byetta for over a year… on "5" at first, lost some weight, then
put on "10 - got sick as a dog. I get motion sickness real easy, I think I’m
just a queasy person… so the 10 about killed me! Went back on 5 for months….
Had been on Metformin along with it, had good numbers.
Then I went away from home for 4 mos. (taking care of business in another
state last summer, kind of a personal AND business type of vacation trip), was
without my hubby during that time, and kind of fell off the wagon.
My numbers went up higher than ever.
RECENTLY have gotten back on 5 for one month, then on 10 for the last few
weeks. It still makes me somewhat queasy but not as bad as before. I think I can
handle it. BUT, she also put me on Avandamet (I got diahreah from Metformin)
… but she said the Avandamet takes "about 3 mos" to actually be fully

Low-Glycemic Load Diet May Be More Effective

Low-Glycemic Load Diet May Be More Effective For Dieters With Certain
Insulin Response Patterns

May 2007 - Overweight individuals who secrete insulin at a higher level
may experience greater weight loss by selecting a low-glycemic load
diet, compared to a low-fat diet, according to a study in the May 16
issue of JAMA. The researchers also found a low-glycemic load diet to
have beneficial effects on HDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations.

"With prevalence approaching one-third of the population, obesity is
among the most important medical problems in the United States and
identification of effective dietary treatment has become a major public
health priority. Three popular diets—low fat, low carbohydrate, and low
glycemic load—have recently received much attention.

Avandia problems

Sunday, February 18th, 2007

I’ve been taking Avandamet(4/500) for about 2 years and never got my
A1C down below 6.5. I’ve been on Byetta 10mcg since last Dec and my
A1C is now at 5.5.

I spoke to my doctor today and he tried to convince me that staying on
Avandia was ok. He said that he had talked to the Avandia drug rep(I’m
sure he isn’t biased) and the doctor said he felt comfortable with
continuing to prescribe it. I felt otherwise and we are trying just
Metformin 500 twice a day(with the Byetta), for now.

Any opinions or thoughts on just Metformin with Byetta? Or about
Avandia, in light of the news?
