New Diabetic

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

These are the things that really helped me understand Diabetes:

1. Diabetes for Dummies (book) No kidding! This book was really good
at laying out what Diabetes is and how to handle daily living. I
picked it up at Wal-Mart. I also picked up a little

2. Call you local hospital and see if they have a Diabetic Education
Class. My hospital offers a 4-week class every month. The info I got
there was EXCELLENT!!! (My insurance covered the class, but if you
don’t have insurance they will let you come for free. Give them a
call. They taught me how to use my meter, how to count carbs, what
diabetes does to the body, etc.)

3. Use your meter. Start out by taking your BS reading:
when you wake up

Medicare

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

I am on Medicare and Oxford/Secure Horizons. It pays for it but because it
is part D, I am in the donut hole. I have too much money to get help from
the company(Amylin) to pay for it. If you call their 800# or go to their
website there should be useful information about insurance and help.

diabetes education

i know this may sound "stupid" since i’m a diabetic but would
appreciate anyones wisdom on this….i’ve been diagnosed as diabetic
for 2yrs now (i’m 32) My dr.(general) said all my levels
were "funky"(high tryglicerides, thyroid, high calcium, low potasium
and other things i can’t remember) so he would send me to an endo. So
endo puts me on meds and gave me a new meter since the one i had i
bought on ebay. Well the point is i’ve never been educated on
diabetes. Maybe the endo assumed i knew since i was "diabetic". Lately
since reading these posts, i dont even pay nearly half the attention to
my diabetes. Maybe i’m in denial. I don’t even test every morning and
definitely never after meals. I dont even know what are normal blood
readings suppose to be. All i know is that your fasting is suppose to
be under 120. And y’all been mentioning carbs i didn’t realize as a
diabetic we needed to watch our count. i just assumed it was because we
needed to watch our weight. So my point is do y’all know of a site

Time lag before full effectiveness?

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

I started taking Byetta months ago, and while it made me feel a lot
better, there wasn’t a dramatic drop in my blood sugar. Well, now I’m
getting one. I’ve lowered my Lantus dosage three times in a month or
so and will do it a fourth time tomorrow or the next day. I contacted
the company that makes my meter and they sent me tresting solutions.
The meter is spot-on accurate, so now I’m trying to figure out what -
if anything - I’m doing right.

Has anyone else had a long delay before Byetta starts working at its
best?

I’ve also started eating raw almonds, which a diet guru claims are the
greatest blood-sugar drug in the world (along with broccoli, extra
virgin olive oil and wild salmon) Anyone had any good experiences with
raw almonds? I ask because the FDA wants to require almonds to be

Paying for it

I think if you call their 800# that might be best. They do have a
compassionate care program I believe it is called. I am surprised at what
you are being charged. Duane Reade a chain in NY area is only charging $209
which is far lower than the smaller pharmacy. Or their website itself might
have advice but calling them during business hours might be best

Learning Technique

Monday, January 1st, 2007

I was wondering, did any of you get instruction from your doctors on how to
use it or rather inject yourself? Mine didn’t bother and he is an
endocrinologist. I looked at the video that came with the starter kit then
I called the 800 # and they helped me. Just sometimes I get distracted and
make a mistake so it bleeds. Today was a whopper. It went up into the pen
itself and they said that I had to get a new pen(duh!) and they would call
the pharmacy and give them a voucher for me.
