Hello everyone, I’ve been reading some posts and I’d like to fill
you all in on my history and I’d love any advice anyone feels like
sending my way. I was 1st diagnosed at 18, back in 1972. It was so
much different then. Dr. Attkins had just wrote his first book and
pretty much everyone thought he was crazy. I was assured that carbs
had absolutely no effect on blood sugars. I pretty much ignored
things as I wasn’t too bad until my 3rd child was born in 1989, at
that time I was put on insulin. I got off it for a few years and
have been on it pretty much ever since. I’m now 52, happily married
w/3 grandchildren. My sugars have been pretty much out of control
for the past few years. I’m very insulin resistant. Before byetta
I’ve been taking 120 lantis twice daily and about 50 units of
novolog 3x’s daily, 5mg glyburide 2x daily and 850 of metformin
3x’s daily. Before byetta till I can’t remember the last time I had
a fasting BG under 360 and usually I hit 500 at least once a day and

over 600 at least once a week.My blood checker only registers to 600
so it would just say to high to read. The lrg insulin shots would
make me so hungry that I just kept gaining and I’m now at 255. I
have alot of leg and knee problems so exercise is hard and it seems
like all I could do was sleep. This is a whole new hopefilled start
for me. My husband and I quit smoking a little over 6 months ago
after 35 years and now byetta I’m hoping will be a 2nd great step
toward health. Glad to meet you all,

Hi Peggy, the first and second day were unbelievable. I had 144 fasting the 2nd
day and no readings over 200, however I only had about 500 calories for the day.
The amazing part for me was that I didn’t have any hunger. It seemed like it
quit working after the 2nd day, so I did alot of crying, poor me ect.. but now
I’m realizing I’m doing better than I thought. I haven’t been taking any insulin
at all and my fasting has been about 300 and my highest reading 400. That’s
better then I had on 240 units of lantis a day and at least 300 units of
novolgue. I think I’ll probably have to add some lanis back at least. I think if
I can start the day out lower and choose my diet plan wisely that might be the
key. I see the dietician tues. I saw her a few years ago and she’s super nice
but really wanted me to have alot of carbs. I’m having between 150 and 200 a day
now. I feel like if I can cut back and still get the nutrition I need I’d be
    alot better off.
thanks for asking and nice to meet you,
    cathy in Mn.

So how are you doing on Byetta so far? Have your
    sugars gotten lower?

    Hi Cathy,

That is great that you are seeing a result. As previously stated, it is a bit
of trial & error in the beginning to figure out what will work best for you.

That is a lot of carbs to have. As a diabetic, the less carbs for us the
better–undersanding however, that not all carbs are bad ones. The 45 makes
    better sense than the 300.

One of the things your nutritionist may recommend is keeping a diet diary. My
own personal experience is that it is a HUGE help in the beginning. Write
EVERYTHING down that goes into your mouth. If you like to cook and you "taste
test" write all that down. If we have to stop and think about what goes into
our mouths, we make way better choices!

It really is a matter of balancing your meals. When possible plan your meals.
If you sit down and look at what you want to eat, you will find it easier to get
the good carbs in and ignore the bad ones.

The biggest thing you need to realize is that as your blood sugars get lower
and into the normal range, you will lose the cravings for those bad things. If
you slip, that is OK. You didn’t get this way overnight and you aren’t going to
    get better overnight either.

    Good Luck.
