Ask yourself: Do I know someone who consistently reaches for a donut
over oatmeal, has a standing date with their TV instead of the gym or
prefers high-calorie, high-fat fast food to healthy meals? If you
answered yes, you may know someone who has type 2 diabetes or is at high
risk for developing it.

In an effort to help Americans living with type 2 diabetes learn how to
better manage their diabetes, the Byetta: Let’s Talk campaign is

No time for breakfast and too much TV time can help trigger diabetes.

Fitness magazine, in its April edition, reports on nine surprising diabetes risk
factors. The disease affects 21 million people in the United States.

Skipping breakfast increases our risk 30 percent to 50 percent and watching TV
for two or more hours per day boosts it 14 percent, according to Fitness.

Pam O’Brien, the magazine’s article director, says the main reason for the story
was to point out that people can lower their risk in about a month.

The FDA recently announced that the oral diabetes medication Avandia
(rosiglitazone) is associated with an increased risk in bone fractures
in females. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia works by increasing
the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It is used only in patients with type
2 diabetes.

Travel & Needle Disposal

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

I’m sure there are a few of you on here who travel for business. How do you go
about disposal of your pen needles and lancets while on the road? Some hotels I
stay in offer medical waste disposal but many look at you funny if you show up
with used needles at their front desk. I don’t like the idea of just tossing
them in the trash because I wouldn’t want to jeopardize the staff’s safety. I
phlebotomist told me last week that she has a small sandwich-sized sharps
container she ordered from the BD Diabetes magazine. I went to their website
and couldn’t find anything smaller than the home sharps container I already have
but I wouldn’t want to travel with something that bulky. Any suggestions?

type 2 diabetic using insulin 15 years switch to Byetta

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

Dear Members:

I have been diabetic 17 years, using insulin for the past 15 years.
Currently I test 5 times daily, use a combinations of 3 different
insulins R, Lantus, Humalog. I take a total of 6 or 7 injections
daily. I am very well versed on diabeties from a laymen prespectives.
My weight is now 250, from the use of all the insulin and consumptions
of carbs during very low blood sugars. I now longer have symptoms of
low blood sugars until I am in the low 30’s

My question is, are the any user of byetta, that were using insulin and
no longer use insulin? Is anyone using byetta in combination with
insulins.

Many thanks in advance your respone.

Disposal of Needles

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

How do you dispose of your needles? We got a letter from our trash
company that "medical supplies used for blood testing and needles" are
not to be disposed of in the trash.

I have just been saving them all up in an old milk jug, but it’s
getting full.

I thought I might take them to the doctor’s office. Maybe I can drop
them off there?
