Stem Cell treatment in the news today
This is very encouraging news! Maybe they will have a feasible cure for
type 2 in our lifetime.
So far since starting byetta (6 weeks), I’m down 4 pounds, readings are
running below 200 for the first time in ages, and feeling pretty darn
good. I see my GP in two weeks to evaluate if I need the 10mmg dose or
not.
The first 2-3 weeks I was on this med, my appetite was zero. I had to
remind myself to eat. It is back. Anybody else have the appetite come
back?

What does this have to do with type 2? our problem isn’t our beta
cells (at least not initially), but insulin resistance, right?

Hi, Sarah. In my humble opinion, I feel this research will greatly benefit
us type 2’s in the future. From what I understand, most type 2s start with
insulin resistance, which requires our pancreas to produce more and more
insulin. Eventually the beta cells, which produce the insulin in our
pancreas, just literally begin to give out. As they die off, less and less
insulin gets produced, and our blood sugars get higher and higher. Oral meds
cease to work, since most of them are developed to help our pancreas produce
more of its own insulin. If they can develop a procedure to help the
pancreas to create more beta cells, this will benefit both types of
diabetes. Hope this helps. And again, this is my understanding, so if I’m
wrong, please someone correct me.
Oh, and since I’ve been on Byetta for the last year and 1/2, my insulin
production seems to have gone back up on its own. I’ve had to cut back on
Byetta from 10 mcg’s to 5 mcg’s for the last several months, and in the
evening, the 5 is still often too much. This is down from taking Glucophage
4X daily, Actos, Glucotrol and Byetta when I first started taking Byetta in
November of 2005. My doctor really believes the Byetta has restored some of
my beta cells, and that is the reason I’m producing insulin on my own and
require much less medication. Right now I take Glucophage XR X2, and Byetta
5 mcg. X2 daily.
He believes that in the long haul, our own immune systems, and our beta
cells are going to be the answer for the majority of diabetics, both type 1
and 2, and that a "cure" is just around the corner. I sure hope he’s right!

Very cool. I had heard something about Byetta protecting those cells,
can someone elaborate about it?
