Grapefruit!

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Hi All,

I know this is like beating a dead horse… but I found this in Sundays
Star-Ledger (New Jersey) so I thought I’d re-type it…. Tried finding it
on-line so I could just cut/paste but to no avail….

WHEN GRAPEFRUIT AND MEDICATIONS DON’T MIX

Something in grapefruit (and grapefruit juice) inactivates an intestimal
enzyme that partially breaks down some medicines. The result is that the blood
concentration of those medicines rises. It’s possible that it could rise too
high. The effect lasts for 24 hours, so it does no good to eat grapefruit or
drink it’s juice in the morning and take the medicine in the afternoon.

Orange juice does not have the same effect.

Byetta Travel - and Storage

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

1. Michael - thank you for the link for the Medi-Fridge. I plan to
purchase it soon to have on hand in case I have an extended car trip.

2. For those considering the FRIO WALLET: I purchase one and was unhappy
enough with it that I tossed it. I had the one designed for one Byetta
pen. I followed all the instructions - there was no way to insert the pen
after the ‘gel beads’ swelled - and it was nigh impossible to even get the
gel bead pack back into its ‘jacket’. I could have forced the pen in - but
I kept thinking I might damage the dial top of the pen by jamming it with
the force needed. For me, a total waste of money.

3. My recent air travel experience. Last week I flew on CONTINENTAL
AIRLINES from Houston, Texas to Seattle, Washington - a 4 hr 30 minute
flight. Since the Frio wallet I had purchased for this trip was a problem,
I decided to go with the Byetta gel pack. I had checked the Continental

Pretty General Topic

Hello People (Nods to Andrew),

I have read some of the posts here, both the newest ones and the
oldest. I am pretty new to Byetta, but don’t have very good control
right now and am not paying much attention to it. I have a new job and
we’re moving and… I need to get some good control and get back into
the exercise routine.

What I’ve noticed about this site is that there are lots and lots of
sweet, very useful little ideas about how to deal with different things
and what to do when. So here’s my question: is there a place I can go
and just read, like a book, everything that’s been learned about
Byetta? I get irritated at having to open every comment. I’m trying
to do this fast. Any ideas? At any rate, thank you so much to each
person who has shared her or his experiences or observations. Wish I

Byetta Beginings

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Ev,
Here is something I copied from Dr Mendosa’s website. I find this article
interesting and informative. Hope it helps you.
Pam

That’s the conventional wisdom. Yet just one person, Dr. John Eng, is
responsible for the discovery of Byetta. The Food and Drug Administration
approved this powerful new diabetes medication on April 29, 2005.

One of those giants was Dr. Eng’s mentor, Dr. Rosalyn S. Yalow, who won the 1977
Nobel Prize in Medicine for the development of radioimmunoassays of peptide
hormones. After becoming an endocrinologist, Dr. Eng wanted to do endocrine
research and worked in her lab at the VA Medical Center in New York for 18 years
until she retired.

Where and How to Inject Byetta

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

From byetta.com:

*Where should I inject BYETTA?***
BYETTA should be injected into your upper leg, abdominal area, or upper arm
using the injection technique recommended by your healthcare professional.

*How do I prepare my injection site?***
Always wash your hands and clean the skin area where you are going to
inject. Your healthcare professional may give you more specific information
on how to prepare your injection site.

*Do I need to change my injection site? ***
If the injections do not bother you, you do not have to change the general
area of your injection site. If your skin gets irritated, you can choose a
different injection site each time, using your upper leg, abdominal area, or

Sterlizie Injection Site

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Does anyone wipe their injection site with alcohol before injecting
Byetta?

I know it’s recommended for IM injections but wasn’t sure about Byetta
and it’s now mentioned in any of the literature.

What’s your daily carb intake

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Hi
I am really trying to work on the carb intake and see if it makes a
difference in my BS #. Also, what do you eat ???? I am having a
hard time with this, but need some help. Seeing the endo this week
for my bimonthly visit. A1C went from 12.7 - 9.1 and there is still
room to grow, take Byetta 5mg 2x a day and metformin 1000mg x2 and
actos 15mg x2. Like I have said before I am having a hard time
getting this working… No weight loss, I eat very little and having a
tough time exercising, but I am trying more than before.

Numbers were really good in Jan and Feb, but have been creeping up a
little in March…. HELP

Thanks for any ideas on what to eat and how many carbs a day…
Margaret

Oral Meds & Byetta

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Exenatide slows down transit of food and drugs through
the intestine and, therefore, can reduce the absorption of drugs that are
taken orally. To avoid this interaction, administer oral medications one
hour before exenatide is administered. Orally administered drugs that need
to be administered with food should be given with a light meal or snack when
exenatide is not administered.

Does this mean that I should take my metformin and glyburide BEFORE my
Byetta? I usually take the Byetta about 30 minutes before the meal and my
oral meds at the start of the meal.
