Leaky Pen and more
Hi gang,
Haven’t written in a while but I just had an issue with Byetta and
wanted comments from you all fine folks.
For those who do not remember me, I am a 54 yo, been type 2 for 7
years. I went on Byetta in December 05 when
I could not control my numbers when they reached 260-280. The Byetta
was a life saver and for over one year my
A1c was between 5.8-6.9, pretty controlled for me. I lost some weight
(around 14 pounds) and had few if none gastro
issues.
My last two pens were acting strange, but I thought it was my
imagination. One pen lasted 2 weeks longer than a
month, that should have been a clue. Yesterday I went to my endo and 1
1/2 after my Byetta I had a bs number of 351.
I never ever had a number like that, and thinking back the last two
weeks I have been extremely fatigued. I then suspected my
latest pen was leaking. Doc gave me 5mcg pens temporarily and I went
home and sure enough when I inspected the pen, the
plunger was 1/8" above the liquid and the case was very wet. I called
Lilly, they are sending me a voucher for new pen, they also
told me not to keep the needle of the pen, because this probably caused
it to leak. I have been on Byetta for 15 months and have
always kept the needle on (for reuse) and it has yet to leak. Has
anyone experienced this?
Today I used the temp pen endo gave me and the Byetta is working again.
I have been more nauseous than I have even been before
and could barely eat. Does anyone have a clue why my numbers were so
high without the Byetta? How long do you think it will be before
my numbers come down again?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Pam,
Is it possible that you were eating high sugar foods and not really accounting
for it because of the Byetta usage? I find that I can enjoy a muffin, for
example, which I stayed away from without the Byetta because of the carb content
and how it reacted on my sugars.
Also, with the pen, in the paperwork I got, it specifically said to not leave
the needle in the pen for two reasons:
1 that it could cause the pen to leak and 2 the needles are so fine that using
them more than once could cause damage to your skin because the sharpness is
lost after the first use.

Of course, since Byetta, I have been eating fruits 2-3 per day.
Pre-Byetta I dared not touch fruit. Other little things like a cookie
once
in a while. The hi bs is still a little alarming. Dr said if the
numbers don’t go down drastically in a couple of weeks he wants to put
me on insulin.
This I am not happy about at all.
