SOMOGYI EFFECT

Sunday, June 11th, 2006

*SOMOGYI EFFECT*

Somogyi Effect, named for Dr. Robert Somogyi, its discoverer, is a high
morning BG due to a low overnight. It is most commonly seen with insulin
using diabetics, but is also seen with overnight reactive hypoglycemics.

The mechanism is a low overnight, which causes the body to react by
releasing many of the same hormones seen in DP. The strongest blood glucose
increasing hormone, *glucagon*, plays an important role. It tells your liver
to start glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis to provide enough glucose for
your body to survive. This is sometimes referred to as a *Liver Dump. *Often,
this mechanism over-produces, and you wake to a significantly higher BG.

Setting your bedtime BG target a bit higher, will usually prevent you from
having a hypoglycemic event overnight.

Dawn effect

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

Hi! I have been on Byetta for a few months and while not losing any yet
at least I stopped gaining weight. My bg is ok except for having a
strong Dawn effect. I also have a liver dump after 15 minents of
exercise. So a little morning walk doesn’t help at all. Any subjestions?

thanks,

Woody

Kay
Here is a link I found from Byetta about how to eat. I of course would not take
the advice of a stranger over your health care professional But, I have eaten
cheese and drank milk the entire time. No one told me different. I wonder what
the basis was. I eat wheat bread and occasional fruit. Byetta helps control
how your body uses insulin to digest carbs I guess that is why I thought that we
needed some. Good luck to you. If I thought that it would save my life I would
do my best to eat that way but, it sounds like you have a scary PA.

not to exceed 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). BYETTA Pens should be

Why Nauseus now?

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Ok, started my 4th pen this morning. While I’ve never had a problem
with nausea sans the first couple of shots, I am nauseous 2 for 2 on
this new pen after not getting nauseous for over 3 months. Any ideas?

FDA advises consumers not to eat ANY Peter Pan peanut butter

purchased
since May 2006 and not to eat Great Value peanut butter with the product
code beginning with "2111" purchased since May 2006 because of a risk of
contamination with salmonella.

All Peter Pan peanut butter purchased since May 2006 is affected; only
those jars of Great Value peanut butter purchased since May 2006 with a

peanut butter with the specified product code has not been linked by
CDC to the cases of Salmonella Tennessee infection, the product is
manufactured in the same plant as Peter Pan peanut butter and, thus, is
believed to be at similar risk of contamination. Great Value peanut
butter made by manufacturers other than ConAgra is not affected.

High Blood Sugars

Greetings Group,

Melodie from Anchorage. In reading a number of the messages, you
all
may be doing this or may have gotten away from this, but do you
track
your bg just before you eat and then check it two hours after you
eat?

When I visited the nutritionist I was told that right before I eat
to
check my blood. Two hours later, I was to check it again. If the
spike was within 50 of the original #, the food I ate was "ok" as it
was not too high in carbs. If it was higher than that, I either

Diabetes and Sleep Apnia

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Acording to some figures I have heard diabetics have a 15% or higher
chance of having sleep apnia. As this makes diabetic controle higher
and can cause high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease
I thaught I would mention it.
After starting treatment for my sleep apnia I found that exercise
is a little easier and it’s easier to follow a meal plan. Oh! the Byetta
was helping my and I wasn’t gaining weight like when I was on Actos
but I just wasn’t losing any weight. Now I have started to lose a few
pounds.

steping down off my soap box,
