Thyroid Cancer
Greetings from Alaska.
I just found out, last Wednesday, that I have Thyroid cancer. I wanted
to mention this to the group so that folks can get their Thyroid
checked at their yearly exam.
This cancer is curable but results in having the Thyroid removed and
one course of Radioactive Iodine as treatment.
Please make sure your regular doctor check for this cancer as it tends
to be discovered by the doctor feeling your gland and seeing if any
lumps are felt. You might then need to get a biopsy to see if it is
cancer.
Please make sure you get checked out!

Melodie, does this have anything to do with Byetta? I read somewhere that
testing in rats suggested an increased risk of Thyroid cancer in people using
Byetta? I will say a prayer for you.

No. The Thyroid Cancer is actually a complication of the diabetes, not the
Byetta.
Thanks for the prayers.

How weird, Anita. I was diagnosed with (papillary) thyroid cancer
last Wednesday, too! I go to consult with the surgeon today. (It IS
NOT from Byetta, if anyone is panicking, as I only started Byetta 3
weeks ago.)
I’m curious as to why you say it is caused by the Diabetes…I’ve
never heard anything like that.
I agree though about making sure you get your thyroid "felt"…my
gynecologist/nurse practitioner found that my thyroid felt enlarged at my
not-quite-annual exam. She had me tell my endo. who did a thyroid
ultrasound which led to a needle biopsy and my diagnosis. I had been
seeing the endo for about 2 years and I don’t remember her ever
feeling my thyroid…She tested for thyroid levels, but they have
always been normal in me….so that was no clue to the cancer.
Anyway…maybe we can support each other through this journey…

Hi Denise,
Melodie Here. I am actually the one who sent the note around regarding the
Thyroid Cancer.
Any support is great. My surgery is Thursday, March 1st. The info in my
Endo’s office said that it can be a complication. However, even though I noted
it as a complication of the diabetes, the reality is that so many things can be
complicated by the diabetes in and of itself, that breathing wrong could be a
complication:)
My Thyroid levels have always been normal and when I had the first ultrasound
of the gland, they discovered that I am one of those folks who have a lot of
nodules and at first was dianosed as ok. The Endo didn’t like that and ordered
the biopsy.
The fun begins!

Greetings Group,
I am pleased to report that I made it through the surgery and am now
home after a hospital stay of less than 24 hours. I do have a sore
throat but that is more from the tube they put down my throat than
from the surgery itself.
They saved three of the four para thryoid glands but I have to have
massive doses of Calcuim for this week because my calcuim dropped.
Pretty interesting experience, but again folks, get that thyroid
checked! The doctor said that the cancer had not spread anyplace else
so that is great news as well.

Dear Melodie,
Glad you’re home and doing well! I go for pre-op tests Monday and Wednesday,
and then my surgery is March 12….I really hope I’m home as fast as you because
my daughter’s third birthday is on March 14.

The other day I called Amylin because of a foriegn substance in my Byetta,
The person on the other end of the line asked whether I reused needles. (I
don’t.)
When they sent me the package to send the vial back to them, it included an
information sheet that still says to keep byetta refrigerated even after
opening. (The sheet was copyright April 2005.) I didn’t call back for
clarification.
Just thought I’d pass this info on for no real reason.

I had an aunt who had her thyroid removed when she was in her mid-20’s. She
took thyroid medication daily.
She passed away a few years ago….at age 92.
Except for her thyroid, she lived a long healthy active life with few other
medical problems.
Good luck to those with thyroid issues.

Hi Denise,
Are they doing it as day surgery? The only real problem I have had is the
sore throat from the breathing tube. It is almost gone but I still am a little
tired.
