Does anyone know if we can take Byetta forever or do we stop taking it
when we reach our goals on our B/S and weight and will we regain the
weight
and the B/S problem? Is this just a quick fix or is it fixing and
healing the problem of diabetics? And can you lose to much weight
taking this ?

At present diabetes is a forever disorder. One of the promising effects of
byetta and other glp-1 related drugs is its ability in animal research to
stop beta cell destruction and cause regeneration of beta cell mass. It
makes sense not to just use byetta as a bandaid for some short term aid in
diabetes progression by making sure to moderate carb intake and regular
exercise and keeping within the normal weight range.
If given the full chance to cause beta cell regrowth the causes of their
destruction of glucose toxic effects and saturated fat effects and
sedentary lifestyles and calorie excess should be avoided. This means
exersize and pushing the plate away sooner and keeping a1c and post meal
glucose levels as close to the normal range as possible. Your meter will
tell you if the latter is happening. There is every reason to think that
byetta is only a short term slowdown if these things are ignored, byetta is
potentually a great benefit as above but no better then other drugs if
otherwise used as an excuse to continue as before. As with other drugs,
one can eat right through the benefits.

A couple of folks on a blog site have stopped taking anything at all.
I couldn’t locate one of them tonight, but have seen it. I’ve
wondered if it truly does cause beta cell regeneration. Personally, I
‘ve noticed that even when I occasionally get really stupid eating
fruit, FUDGE, or whatever, my bg never, ever gets above about 180 now.
Strange.

35 and counting…
Are you exercising? Your body will go into starvation mode and make it harder to
lose. You have to exercise to continue to lose.

You are depressed after losing 30 pounds? 30 pounds is a great weight
loss. How long did it take you to lose that much?
July 22nd, 2006 at 2:18 pm
I started taking it in Nov 2006 And no i’m not depressed i love it, it
was so fast a first now 3 weeks ago it just stopped .I have a disablity
with my foot so I don’t get much exersize .I have lypoma and lymphadima
which makes it hard to walk and steap om my foot

I understand that your health issues make exercise difficult, but if you work
with your doctor I am sure he/she can help you find an activity that will work
for you. My 80 year old parents exercise, using modifications for their age and
health issues.

I too have problems getting around. I go to my local YMCA 2 to 3 times a week
for the pool therapy. They have people there that can fit an exercise class to
your needs. It is amazing how free you feel in the water. And you do start to
loose weight and your muscles start working again. I now can climb stairs again
and take walks, still with my walking stick. But I can walk the malls!
Check your local Y they even can work out a financial payment if you need to.
Hope this helps!

Forget my last e-mail - I re-read yours and now I understand. You have lost
30 pounds since Nov 06 and have not lost any in three weeks. 30 pounds is a
phenomenal amount of weight loss for even a year - much less four months.
Your body might just need some time to adjust to that before losing more.
And, it may take eating less or getting some kind of exercise to jump-start
your metabolism to start losing again. Byetta is foremost a diabetes
treatment. Remember the weight loss is just a bonus - for some. There may
be a few people who will lost most of what they want through Byetta alone,
but I would be surprised. Keep a food diary for a week and seen if by
looking at it you can determine changes you have made or might could make.
Remember - 30 pounds is AWESOME.

Well apparently she is doing some promo work for byetta. She looked great,
Rosie couldn’t stop talking about, and she attributed it to the byetta. They
also talked about celiacs disease today, too, since that is something that
Elizabeth has.

try a new scale.
July 27th, 2006 at 7:10 am
oh i had to laugh at this one…roflmao…..i think because i have done
something similiar. I move the scale around the bathroom floor. You know when
you stay the same for 2 weeks you begin to wonder why. Let’s see…2 great
weeks on program with WW. Out of 14 days I exercised 8 times…that’s 10 or so
miles and stretching…yet at the weigh in …SAME!!! Its frustrating and you
don’t know why. Okay so you add exercise, do you add more food? Hmmm I don’t
know…But good luck!!!

Remember, when you start excercising, the first weight you lose if water. That
is why it comes off so quickly to begin with. Then, as you lose fat, you gain
muscle. The great news is the muscle burns up that fat, the bad news–it weighs
more than the FAT!
You can actually gain weight while dieting. It is just the right weight!
Sometimes, that is why you hit that wall.
Good Luck!

actually according to my instructors at the gym…a pound of fat is the same as
a pound of muscle…. a pound is a pound, now it may be shaped differently but a
pound of sugar weighs as much as a pound flour
and I have been exercising for five years….faithfully…so not losing one
week and staying on track seriously does not make sense.
i do agree you can gain weight while dieting…if your exercising… you
basically reshape your body and gain muscle.

I once saw a model of 5 pounds of fat and a model of 5 pounds of muscle. The 5
pounds of muscle was about the size of a large yam. The 5 pounds of fat was
about 3 times that. It was very informative and depressing. But I have been
working to lose weight. I was before that but it was quite motivational.

So it is safe to say that although 1 pound of fat and 1 pound of muscle weighs
the same, the 1 pound of fat increases your body size more than 1 pound of
muscle.

*That is interesting and I had never heard it put like that before. What I
find motivational is when I lose weight, to carry that weight around - like
when I lost ten pounds I carried two five pound bags of sugar around my
house — and, finally, I carried twenty pounds. No wonder my back and knees
feel better - that is a lot of weight they don’t have to carry around. I
don’t want that back on my body ever again!*

Me, personally, I have never lost any weight. I have merely misplaced it.
My back pain over the last 10 days sure hasn’t helped any. And yesterday I
had to walk a distance, and now my shins are killing me. If the supermarkets
around here did online ordering and delivering, I’d only have to walk out to the
mailbox.

My doctor stresses meansurements more than weight loss. Even while
adding weight by exercising, the inches go down. It seems that the
inches we lose is more accurate than weight loss and means more
healthwise.
July 31st, 2006 at 4:39 am
How would you do that?

NEED any exercise!

I first asked my endo for Byetta b/c I heard about its possible
weightloss-inducing properties. Yet, I had been doing Weight
Watchers, & felt strongly that I wanted to lose weight via diet &
exercise. My endo said, "If Byetta helps you lose weight, great. But
when you’re 15 pounds away from goal, we’ll stop Byetta & you can lose
the last bit doing Weight Watchers."
That seems to imply that my doc expects my diabetes to improve as I
lose weight. Fat reduction is known to make tissues more insulin
receptive, right?
August 13th, 2006 at 9:05 am
As I understand it, if you are a type 2 and heavy, losing weight will help your
body use the insulin it produces naturally to work more effectively.
A number of people, upon losing weight and in some cases losing all the weight
they need to, go off diabetes meds entirely.
It just depends on your body and your habits. Just because you shed the
weight, doesn’t mean you won’t be diabetic.
I know a number of really, really skinny folks who are type 2.

Hi Laura and welcome yes byetta is great I have lost 35 lbs sence
november. I did get sick to my tummy but I got sea bands for motion
sickness and it went away .Good luck my readings are now 108 they were
177 before Byetta
August 17th, 2006 at 7:06 am
Wow that is very encouraging to me ~ thanks for your response. 35 lbs. would be
very good for me and I know that’s gotta help with the diabetes and just
overall
health in general. Especially in the having more energy area. I feel tired
alot now and
I don’t like that at all. Thanks again. Does Byetta curb the appetite
somehow?

August 19th, 2006 at 9:32 pm
I also forget to eat and when I do eat nothing looks good to me .The
sick feeling didn’t start for me till I went on Byetta 10 then it began
I felt like I did when I was pregnet.Meet frying was bad .Now I have
gotten sea bands for motion sickness it works!!! .I lost 30 lbs then
the weight loss stopped for 4 weeks now it is moving again .I have now
lost 35 lbs sence Nov . Sometimes the med burns going in but if I warm
it up in my hand just hold on to the vial for a few seconds I feel
nothing no pain from the needle and no stinging from the meds it works
great. I love Byetta Thank You "You little lizard"

Hi, My name is Evelyn, (Ill use Ev if thats ok). My endo just put me
on byetta. I have been using Actos and Amaryl but my bg has been too
high lately so Im trying Byetta. Ive been on it since Friday (4 days).
I am needle phobic so I didnt want to do it but Im giving it a shot.(
a litle play on words) I was hoping to get some hints from this group
on good spots to inject. I know if I keep injecting my stomach it will
get sore. Has anyone besides me, experienced nausea from this? I sure
have . I have an ulcer and it is acting up lately. Im wondering if
that has anything to do with Byetta.Im looking forward to getting to
know you all. Ev

Ev - I know some people inject in the thighs but I have found that too
painful. Byetta recommends the abdomen if I remember correctly - and
I rotate back and forth - I do left side in the morning and right side
in the evening (I remember by "righty nighty"). Don’t get too close
August 25th, 2006 at 3:06 pm
it does not hurt to go straight in with the needle there very thin and
short . I don’t give it to myself any where near my navel like some say
I give it in my upper tummy not in the lower area .I stand and I give
it to myself in the same area just no right on top of the same place I
never have soreness in the injection site . It works well for me all
the time blood sugars are great and the scale is going in the right
direction. Loss Of 35 lbs sence November. I don’t use any swabs on area
before I give my shot because it stings more. I have to remember to eat
and drink lots of water .I love this Byetta I’m not a slave to food
anymore I never eat more that a few bites nothing looks or taste good
to me I’m very happy with the resalts .If you still feel sick try sea
bands I leave them on all the time .I’m Not sick anymore
August 26th, 2006 at 11:56 am
OK, Im going to try inserting the needle straight in, maybe tonight. (maybe).
I need to lose weight desperately. Since going on Actos I gained about 40
lbs. Maybe even more. I tried and tried to lose it but Actos makes it
impossible.
It bloated me, plus if I tried to cut down, I would go into low blood sugar
and I was always hungry. I have high hopes of losing on Byetta. I wanted to try
Januvia because it is supposed to help with weight loss also, but my DR said
that If I was taking the dose I was taking of Actos, Januvia wouldn’t work for
me. So here I am.Ev

Why won’t your insurance cover it? It is for Type 2 diabetics It should
cover it. You can only get it by perscription from a Dr.That I know of
And yes I have noticed a difference in this batch also .Everything
slowed down my weight loss and my numbers are higher they were 106 at
the low end now there up to 130 what is up with this . I have lost 37
lbs so far but this last 5 lbs have been so slow not like before it
just fell off .With this last 3 pens I have been hungery and not as
much sickness .I thought I was just getting used to it .
February 15th, 2007 at 12:27 am
Hi Tina ,Yes I have bad diaeria. also I think it is from the metforim
not from the Byetta ,I still get sick to my tummy if i don’t use the
sea bands they help alot .You can get them at walmart it is for motion
sickness they really help. The Byetta 10 is stronger than the 5 but I
see better weight loss on the 10. 40 lbs now sence last Nov.Good Luck
and don’t give up ok

Hi new to the group but not to diabetes… diaganosed about 18 yrs
ago been on everything that hit the market … still on what i am
not allergic to. Byetta is the latest . Got on the (5) and it had
no effect moved to the 10( once a day) quickly and starting seeing
some results but still taking it with Metformin (2000 )twice a day
and Glipizide (20)two a day. and still only have under control some
of the time. I dont know exactly what makes the byetta kick in but
it seems to give me better control numbers when there is a little
sugar on the menu …I have a piece of dove candy once every couple
of months just the small halloween size ones and for some reason
byetta makes the numbers drop very significantly….Like from 190 to
110. It may just be me I dont recommend this for every one. I seem
to have a very strong constitution my Byetta has no effect on me at
all … no nausea no dizziness no bad tastes only my testing lets me
know it is working.
The only thing I hate is that it leaves bruses at the injection
sites on my stomach I look like I have been in a belly whomping bar
brawl even though I am careful and use alcohol at the site. I almost
wish they would come out with a 15. may be I could drop the other
drugs if they ever do.

Hi Brenda:
Maybe it’s time to talk to your doctor. My doctor wants me to stay on a
small amoun of Lantus at bedtime until my numbers come down but I only take
about 12 units…..anymore insulin than that, especially the fast acting would
interfere with the appetite suppressing effects of Byetta, at least for me.
Insulin makes me hungry and makes it almost impossible to lose weight. If
the 5 mcg isn’t enough for me I would consider going to the 10 mcg or on
Metformin to supplement the byetta rather than continue taking insulin.
Although
metformin wrecks my stomach and I’m hoping this will keep working. So far so
good in that I get full pretty fast and am able to stay on the Weight
Watchers CORE program. I find it helps to plan out what I’m going to eat, make
sure
it’s good nutritious food; fill up on veggies and high fiber food, and have
some kind of support system. I don’t expect that Byetta will cause me to
lose weight on it’s own but am finding it certainly helps..
Anyway, good luck and don’t beat yourself up….we all get off track…..I
just read an article somewhere talking about how we have a limited store of
will power. They teach us at Weight Watchers that it’s a mistake to not eat
enough. We need to feel full and satiated most of the time or eventually we
rebel. It also helps me to try and stay in tune with my body; it will
often tell me what it wants to eat and when I’ve had enough. That appestat is
how most people stay their correct weight I imagine and it’s been a long time
since mine has worked…and it was non-existent when I was trying to control
my sugar with insulin.
So far the Byetta continues to be a real blessing for me.

Brenda, one of the things Byetta can do is cause you to feel bad if you eat
too much after your injection. I know how difficult it can be to give up
food habits but before going to a stronger dose, you should discuss this
with your doctor. Otherwise I fear you might feel worse should you go to
the 10mcg pen.
