Question on drinking

Firstly - I’m not a lush - but I do enjoy going out and partyin’ every now
and then.

I’m curious, since i just started Byetta this Tuesday - is it still ok to
drink?

And I really don’t want to hear the "you shouldn’t drink, it’s bad for you
stuff" - I just want some honest answers on drinking+Byetta. Enough
drinking to get a good buzz on.

Is this safe with Byetta?

Any experiences?

I just want to know if I should or shouldn’t based on my new med…

I’ve drank before and i’m on metformin, glucotrol and spiro…all with no
problems

Thanxs

Alchohol converts to sugar in your body. I quit drinking because its
    dangerous to drink with diabetes.
It will make your sugars skyrocket.

Hello Dennis, I guess if the alcohol drink one imbibes contains sugar
such as a mixed drink with fruit juice, sweet wine or the starch in beer
it might make one’s Bg skyrocket.

A danger to people with diabetes is the action of the alcohol itself. It
interferes with the liver, preventing it from sending out reserve sugar
    when one goes low.

I know this doesn’t sound very scientific but hey, I’m not a scientist:)

So, diabetics on insulin, sulfs, and I guess Byetta….anything which
lowers the Bg can get a very dangerous low if any kind of alcohol is
    taken.

Some precautions if one drinks alcohol…do so with a meal, closely test

the Bg, don’t plan to go right to sleep or drive a car etc, have glucose
tabs handy and have minimal amount .

The original poster, a young person with diabetes describes the
situation of drinking to get a buzz. This could be potentially dangerous
    and should be avoided.

Diabetes is not fair, and it really stinks!

    Aloha, Marge

I have had no problems whatsoever. At least I don’t think so. On new year’s
eve, I felt like I drank enough to get quite buzzy, but alas, I was not. I
doubt it had anything to do with Byetta, but probably rather due to weak and
tiny jello shots. I’ve drank before, maybe something at the bar, and nothing
    unusual happened, but YMMV.

The problem with that philosophy is that the damage is taking place wither
you "felt" like it was happening or not.

Well, pretty much anything causes damage to someone, and a little alcohol once
again isn’t going to hurt anyone, provided you don’t drive, do something
ridiculously stupid, or drink so much you get sick. A drink or two now and
    again won’t kill me.

Lol…That is the classic line from people who think that it always happens
to other people. For Diabetics….every time you take a drink, your liver
is being damaged. As well as your kidneys. My brother died at the age of
36 from kidney and liver damage from drinking as a diabetic. He thought it
wouldn’t hurt him either. And your right, it might not kill you, but will
that be any comfort when you are waiting for a liver transplant or lying
there getting you daily dialysis done? Some things are worse than death.
Life is so unpredictable. I chose not to take any chances with my health
that I don’t have to. So if I were you, I’d make sure I could get all the
fun I could get out of those "few" drinks, cause it won’t be fun forever.

I am one of those goofy people who can have just as much fun as the
drinkers do, without taking a drop of alcohol! Not only can you have as
many laughs, you will be able to laugh at those folks with that "buzz"
on. And if you want to, you can let yourself get progressively goofier
too, just with no risks, and driving home is totally safe. Sometimes
you can even provide rides for those who are too buzzed to drive.

I feel sad for people who need alcohol to have fun. Order seltzer with
lime or lemon for your drink, and have all the fun you want. I know,
one of the questioners didn’t want any advice, but hey, its free and
    won’t harm you a bit!

Now, please mind that my intended tone is not as defensive or anything other
than just responding. I drink very rarely. Maybe once a month, or less.
Usually less. Chances are, those few drinks a year aren’t going to cause a lot
of damage. Although I am young, I never went through the whole drink till you
puke stage, never really did the whole party cuz I’m college thing. Not a
drinker, just enjoy a drink, maybe two though not likely, once and again.
Chances are I’ll be over it completely over the next few years, especially since
    I cannot stand wine. LOL

Many diabetics drink 6 to 8 ounces of red wine every night to help
control their diabetes. There are many studies done that prove a
chemical in the wine does help.

Not every drink is damaging! I dont drink because I choose not to, but
if I chose to have an after dinner drink in the evening there is nothing
harmful about it. As with everything else, moderation is the key.

I would think it would be a better choice than a piece of cake made with
white flour and sugar - or mashed white potatoes……..
