Scared
I was diagnosed in Sept with Type 2 Diabetes and my primary care physician
referred me to a Endocrinologist. I wanted to try Byetta and was given
prescription for 3(5 mcg) pens and 3(10 mcg) pens. I started Sept 29 on the
5 mcg pen and then in October I used 2nd refill for 5 mcg pen. I then
realized I syhould have been on 10 mcg dosage in October. I finished the
October 5 mcg pen but after Halloween went into major back slide and did not
take pens for Nov, Dec or Jan. Now I have to go in tomorrow and I know my
a1C is going to be way up. I have not even been taking BS readings.
Allot of my fear was after Nov backslide was afraid to restart in Dec on 10
mcg pen. When I started 5 mcg I was nauseated all the time so I can imagine
10 mcg. I did get used to 5 mcg pen and nausea went away but I just hate to
go thru that again. All of my excuses are not going to hold any water
tomorrow and I hate myself for sliding as I was in a real good managing
groove for first 2 months and had a A1C of 5.7…I will say that I had to
stay home and be very committed which made me tied up in a regiment of
eating, taking meds, taking BS readings and jounalling everything. It was
like a full time job. Dec was a busy month I could not have gotten through
it if I had been boggled down with the regiment I was on. There has to be a
easier way. I took BS readings 4 times a day.
I am not going to get a good report tomorrow kinda scared and
disappointed in myself. Anyone been where I am at now. Please could use some
tips on easier way to manage the regiment so I can live with it.
Laura
PS have not gone to Diabetes classes yet. Need to schedule for Feb
Also I have the Curves portion plate. I cannot wait to start back up and use it.
So hope is not gone. LOL

You’re not alone. This was my first holiday season with the spit and my problem
started with going to Thanksgiving dinner at my daughter’s house. I didn’t want
to have the queasy feeling there, so I skipped the injection. I haven’t taken
another one since and I’m beating myself up constantly. The only solution I know

All you can do is look forward. You have the opportunity to make
choices now to shape your outcomes later. Beating yourself up about
what you did or didn’t do in the past is just going to make you
stressed out and feel like a failure. Instead focus on everything you
can do today and going forward.
It’s funny you mention you were in a "good groove" the first 2 months.
I was the same way, perfect in all aspects of my record keeping and
compliance, then I started to slide. Guess the honeymoon wears off lol.
Good luck and keep us posted!

I think it is easy to "go off the wagon" so to speak. Especially when you are
new and scared. Don’t beat yourself up just go on from here. Take your shot at
the next appropriate meal. I was off my Byetta for a week while my new
insurance approved it. I had been slightly sick. None since I started on the
10. Plus if you have to get through it you might as well get it done. I will
be pulling for you.
I took the class and was diet and exercise controlled for a long time. I could
still not figure out exactly what to eat after I took the class. I wanted to
lose weight. I read Dr. Phil’s weight loss book that really helped me with the
emotional stuff. I didn’t understand his diet very well. I happened to look at
The Southbeach Diet book. I intended to just look at the recipes. But I
started reading it and it made a lot of sense. So I followed it. Look into
that if you are interested.
I think the best thing for me has been to make some things automatic. Just
think of it as part of somethng that you already do.
Once you figure out how foods affect you then you don’t have to think about it
so much. For example I have a better day if I have a protein breakfast than a
high carb one.
My best food chioces are Eggs for breakfast. I have one piece of whole wheat
toast.
Lunch is a salad with meat and cheese or soup with an appropriate amount of
carbs.
Dinner is a small serving of protein, a complex carb and a nonstarchy vegetable
like salad or squash. It is easily adapted for my large family.
Just try to make it as easy on yourself as possible. I lost 60 lbs. eating this
way. But, I ended up with stronger meds and byetta anyway. So don’t be too
hard on yourself. The first day eating for your health is the hardest.
You can do it. Pam

*That is well put, Pam. They say it takes 28 days to make a habit. The
less thinking you have to do about food, the easier things are and it frees
up your energy for other things. I have found less variety in eating
Mon-Fri makes it easier for me to shop and stick to things. Then on Sat and
Sun when I am off work, I add some variety.*

I have since been to my Endo and I told Dr that I was nauseous and was
afraid to start 10 mcg pen after not taking 5 for a month. She just
restarted me on a 5 again and said in a month start your 10. She also
explained to me (when I asked about not feeling like eating entire 1200
calories per day)
That it would be fine just make sure your getting enough of your food groups
She said getting weight down (I did gain 14 lbs) was more important than BS
readings as mine by some strange miricle only went up from A1C 5.6 to A1C 5
8 ..She explained to me that the overweight was probably why my body was not
to substain enough insulin and reducing my weight would probably release my
insulin correctly. So I got the impression from her today that losing
weight is essential to managing my Diabetes.
In essence I am hearing that just eat enough to my fullness w/0 getting
all concerned with amt of calories per day and concentrate on losing weight.
I still should be watching BS level but mine seems in control from meds
right now.
So the good news is I did not need to be scared because the 2nd visit to
Endo was very much more informative to me than the first. Also the Dr
realized this was all part of the learning process of recently being
diagnosed. Thanks again for all who cared enough to respond as I took
pieces of all your advice to follow

I agree with you just get it over with but if you were on 10 mcg pen I would
restart with 5 mcg again like a do - over. Especially if you took a break
from the byetta making you queasy. Justgive your Dr a call and he/she can
represcribe you the 5 mcg pen or in my case by telling her at my appt she
gave me a free one right there at her office. Either way beating yourself
will only make you feel bad. Get back into the saddle and ride that horse
back home….My Endo said that Byetta is suspected of rebuilding the beta
cells that Type 2 Diabetics have lost. So the quicker the better you get
back into taking it again. Take Care

Stef;
Must be normal because my BIL said that I was in the "Honeymoon " stage.

like any honeymoon I want to be on" lmao

Pam,
That looks like a good plan and I basically follow that when I am on tract
And what I find really helped me also was the portion plate my Dr gave me. I
ended up looking on the net for a better one and bought the Curves one on
Ebay. I can freeze/microwave in it as well. Of all of them its the best.
