eating time
Hey guys. I know everyone says to eat at like 30 minutes after taking the
byetta, I can’t do that, I am way too nauseated. I usually can’t eat from 2 to
4 hours after I take it and I get heartburn so bad sometimes I just want to cry.
Do you think that I should try to eat 30 min after the shot anyway?

I’m not sure if the Byetta is still doing to work 2-4 hours after taking the
shot. I thought you were supposed to eat within one hour. Why don’t you try
eating very soon after you give the shot. I actually take my shot at the dinner
table just minutes before eating. It has helped my nausea tremendously.
Good luck,
Garland

I think you should try eating immediately after the shot. That’s what I do, and
I don’t have too many problems…

Thanks Garland, you are probably right. I can eat whatever I want if I wait
four hours after my dose. I am just so scared that I will throw up everything
if I eat that soon. I am however, going to try because I will probably get the
most benefit if I do it that way.

If I’m not mistaken the byetta only lasts in your system for 3 hours. So of
course you can eat in 4 hours without nausea. But you are really missing
the benefits of your byetta.

Yes, I totally understand what you are all saying so tonight I took my byetta
and immediately ate a small portioned dinner. After about half an hour, I broke
out into a major cold sweat and about an hour after eating I vomited. I am
however considering this all to be like first taking the byetta because I have
not been taking it properly or eating properly all of this time. So, I will
still continue taking it as you all have been telling me. Thank you for your
imput and support. Mickie

Hello List, I’m in the middle of my 3rd week on the 10 dose twice daily.
It continues to be quite difficult.
I drink a glass of carb countdown milk right after the shots then
nothing for a few hours. My nausea continues all day and night long.
Have been eating tiny amounts of protein shake at a time.
I feel dizzy off and on and I can’t read about or smell food without
wanting to throw up which I’ve done several times. Fatigue has also been
a problem.
The side effects get a tad better each day.
Am I the only one who has the nausea after the 3 hour mark?

Okay…You definitely need to talk to your dr. You have "toughed" it out
long enough. It’s obvious the reason that you are getting sick is your not
getting ENOUGH food. Your dr can prescribe something, probably Phenergan
which will allow you to eat more without getting so nauseous. Bless your
heart! I feel so bad for you. Nothing worse then feeling sick to your
stomach. Please talk to your Dr. and get something done so you can eat.

Hi Mickie,
Waiting 20 minutes to eat after shooting Byetta is what works for me, and I
get the maximum benefit from the ‘full’ feeling, too.

Hi, Marge. There have been several folks that I know on Byetta that the
10 pen is too much all at once. They sort of have to wean themselves on
to it. Check with your doctor and see if you can go back to the 5 pen
for a week or so, then a mixture of the 5 AM and 10 PM (you can use the
5 pen for this, just shoot twice in the PM… you don’t even have to
inject twice, just readjust the plunger while the needle is still
inserted). I did this for several weeks until I could build up to the 10
pen X2. Stayed on that for a couple of months.
Then I had to make another major change, as the Byetta seems to be
repairing my pancreas to the point that it produces too much insulin,
and sends my blood sugars plummeting in the evenings. Just yesterday he
changed mine again to the 5 pen AM with 1 Glucophage, and ::NO:: Byetta
PM, but 2 Glucophage. He agrees that from everything he’s researched, my
pancreas is definitely producing more insulin than pre Byetta…. making
my system overreact to the evening shot. For some reason, it didn’t do
it in the AM, but he thinks that may be connected to the dawn effect.
I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t give up. Be willing to work
around Byetta. And when you are really nauseas, check your blood sugars.
That’s when I realized mine were falling. Check every 15 or 20 minutes
if you can for the first few days after your meals and shot so you can
see how it’s working when you start to get sick. It works…. sometimes
too good. <g> I’ve been on it over a year now, and my sugars are really
in much better shape than they’ve ever been.
Take care,
Cheryl from Florida

Hello Demetria and Cheryl,
Thanks for your suggestions,I so appreciate the support.
I am staying on this med no matter what. Cheryl, seeing repair of your
beta cells is so wonderful -a true miracle that I hope will happen to
mine.
I’ve had type 2 for 13 years and with exercise and a low to moderate
carb diet, then addition of Metformin 2000mg/day, then additon of
Starlix managed to keep my HgAc in the 5’s then 6’s and my last one
before starting Byetta was 7.6. Oh! Oh!
Time to start insulin but my NP said yes to trying Byetta instead. I
have nothing against insulin but as I’m overweight did not want to add
weight . Same reason I had refused Actos.
I feel so fortunate that Byetta has become available. It has radically
lowered my BG and I have lost 17 lbs.
I’m trying to be careful to get at least 50 gms of protein a day to
maintain my lean muscle mass….only want to lose fat!

Hello Sharon, the milk is the only thing I can eat with the shots. I
tried a very small amount of meat and veg and it wasn’t pretty.
One thing that has helped salvage my days the last few mornings is I
wake up at 4 am, take the shot, drink milk and go back to sleep. The very
worst of the dizzies and nausea are over by the time I wake up.
What amazes me is that my BG and appitite are still treated by the
Byetta long afte it’s supposed to be out of my system.
Does this happen to anybody else?

Your story sounds so much like mine, Marge. I was diagnosed 11 years
ago, and had more and more meds added and watched as my A1C went from
6.2 to 8.8 before I finally conceded. My doc was all for me trying
Byetta over insulin, as I was worried about putting on weight also. Just
before I went to my appointment yesterday, I was ready to talk him into
insulin though, because I just couldn’t deal with the low blood sugars
any longer. Going into the 40’s and 50’s every night was really getting
to me. But he is so pleased with the positive results of Byetta
(increased insulin production, weight loss of 20 pounds staying off with
no effort, decreased appetite, 6.2 A1C, ect.) that he wants me to try
taking Byetta AM only, along with Glucophage for 2 weeks, track my
numbers, and possibly add another med for the evening BG’s if
necessary… maybe Starlix or Actos (heck, I’ve been on most of them at
one time or another the last 10 years. :). He just couldn’t say enough
about Byetta, and since I was his first patient on it, I think he’s
really determined to make it work. It’s really good stuff. I think this
plan will work better. I felt really good last night, ate a small meal,
but still not craving much of anything, and my BS 2 hours after dinner
and 2 glucophages was 96. How cool is that!? Keep your fingers crossed
for me, and I’ll do the same for you.

byetta. I just need to find a way to control it. This sucks and I am on my

Hi I also have a hard time with the smells of food. It does not
seem to be getting better. I stay nauseaed all day. I think this
comes from the smell of the food. Fats and meat are something that
really gets to me with the smells. Another thing I dont like now are
hot drinks and use to drink them all the time. I have been on Byetta
since July. I am not losing weight at a great rate like alot of
people. I have lost about 10 lbs. It sure is not from overeating.
But guess it is better than not losing at all. I think I could only
eat veggies and be happy. Kay

Hello Kay, I drink the milk because it is bland. The Carb Countdown milk
is a perfectly balanced food….8 proteins, 5 fats and best of all 3
carb grams, 100 calories.
I use the 2%. There is also fatfree, whole milk and 2% chocolate which
has 4 carbs and no sugar alcohols.
It also can be used to make delicious soups. Mix with a little chicken
broth, add cooked finely chopped veg with a tad of butter and you have a
perfect lower carb lunch. I especially enjoyed making cream of tomato or
cream of broccoli( not these days tho,too much flavor for the lizard!
My tastes have altered to an extreme degree. I used to add chopped Thai
chili peppers to most everything and my favorite cuisine was Chinese,
Thai and Indian. Took a small bite of a spicy dish a few days ago and it
tasted horrible to me.
This change has flabbergasted my husband.

Hello Micki, Thanks for the encouragement.
I think you posted that 4 hours after the shot you could eat without
throwing up.
How about trying a tiny bit of milk or one cheese cracker after the
shots then after 4 hours eat more as you can? I could not eat even a
small meal right after the shot at this point.
Also my BG is treated by the Byetta all day, not just around shot time.
I do eat only 50-70 grams carb a day. In regular times try to keep it
under 100 gms/day.
I just can’t see taking all these meds and eating high carb, doesn’t
work for me.

If you’re lactose intolerant you might want to try "Almond Breeze."
It is fantastic! I’ve been lactose intolerant
It is a "milk" made from almonds (although technically nobody is
milking an almond).
for years and used to drink the Lactaid milk, but discovered this
product recently. It doesn’t give me the same gastro problems soy
products do. Make sure you get the unsweetened version (original or
vanilla).
Compared to fat free milk for a one cup serving:
Calories: 86 (milk), 40 (Almond Breeze)
Fat: 0 (milk), 3g (AB)
Cholesterol: 20 mg (milk), 0 (AB)
Carbs: 12g (milk), 2g (AB)
Fiber: 0 (milk), 1g (AB)
Sugar: 12g (milk), 0 (AB)
Protein: 8g (milk), 1g (AB)
Hope this helps!

Hi Kay,
It sounds like maybe your body is in "Starvation mode" and it is clinging to
every calorie to try and keep the body running. Many people don’t know that
you have to eat to lose weight. Staying nauseated all days is a good
indication that you need something to help with the nausea. Once you can
get started eating a little bit more, I think the nausea will correct
itself. The Dr. can give you a prescription for Phenergan. It did the
trick for me.

Hi Laura,
I started Byetta 6 weeks ago. When the Nurse showed me how to use it
she told me that she too was on it. She told me how sick she got and
how her BS would drop.
After my first shot I waited for this to happen and it never did.
After 4 weeks on 5. I had lost 5 pounds even while I was on a week
long cruise. Never felt sick or any of the other stuff people talk
about. I had more energy and felt great. My doctor put be on 10 and
I have been on that for two weeks. Again none of those side
effects. I also have lost another 3 pounds. Food that once was a
pleasure is no longer that wonderful feeling. I eat to live now not
live to eat. So I know some have bad side effects but it does not
happen to everyone. I wish everyone did not have to go through what
I read hear because this is a miracle drug.
Take Care,
Debbie

Yes, that is right. Then after the shot turn it again to get to the

Thank you so much, I can’t believe how many doses I’ve wasted with this first

pointing out… the Army doctors didn’t know how to use it, they made me sit and
watch a video but then it was another two weeks before I got the needles…
ugh.. well now I know.. thank you.

Andrew….
I am not really sure it’s the same for everyone. I think it’s a ymmv type
of thing, There is a certain time, maybe a few days without eating that
your body stops sending hunger pangs. This lasts for almost 30 days. Then
your body starts "eating" itself. By that I mean actually consuming muscle
mass. As far as the point where it starts hoarding calories….I’m not
sure.
Demetria-Beth
Demetria-Beth or anyone,
I am being lazy today (it is a habit of mine), so I am asking the group,
when does your body go into starvation mode? Is it hours without food, days,
weeks, or what?
Andrew
