venting about weird insurance rules

Friday, December 30th, 2005

I have actually probably solved this problem, but am so frustrated
that I want to post about it here to see if anyone else has
encountered it.

On the 27th of Nov. I had my perscription filled for my byetta and
two days later realized that I am getting very low on needles for
the pen. So I tried to have that perscription filled (I have two
refills) and ran into all sorts of problems because there is some
sort of rule that both perscriptions must be filled on the same day
or they won’t give me any needles. It took from Wednesday until
Friday after my doctor’s office was closed to work through this with
medical mutual (three calls to agents and a supervisor callback). I
have to call my doctor’s office and have them fax the perscription
to a durable goods supplier and they will get it for me this time.
My insurance will pay.

sugar alcohols

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

Here is the best discussion of sugar alcohols and related products I have
seen. The first half deals with the whole question of which carbs to count
and how atkins and other marketers do a bit of word play.

The second half is about what actually happens with sugar alcohols in the
body. It depends on which kind speciffically. A similar treatment of
other related sweetners is also done.

Injection Site

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

Stomach I get bad headache (my only side effect) and thigh no headache.

I called Amlyn and they say that the 3 injection sites are all equally
effective but I’m not so sure.

So far so good!

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

Hi everyone,

I took my first dose at 6:20pm and it’s now almost 2 hours later and I only have
a slight headache and NO nausea. I waited 10 minutes before eating and had soup
and crackers as I figured a lighter meal would be better. The pen was very easy
to set up and use. I did my test "squirt" first and it worked just fine.

Will continue to check in. Anyone else just starting?

Horn Tooting Time

Monday, December 26th, 2005

I hope everyone has their own "horn-tooting" time. Started on Byetta
6/2/06. Since then HbA1c is down from 6.3 to 5.4%. Weight -31 lbs, down
to 168. Tris, LDL/HDL well within specs.
Doctor asked me when I planned to stop losing weight.. :)
5′81/2", and I told her my goal weight is around 155. Good to go. A
major reason for that weight loss is severe arthritic knees.

This is doable! Yes, I do have nausea infrequently (when I know I will
be having it), but by eating right things go well.

I’m just wondering what I do if I ever do reach my goal weight. Perhaps
time to go back to the 5mg pen.

Sweets was:Diabvetis II

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

I thought I would share what has worked for me to stop me from eating sweets and
other carbs that I shouldn’t or cut down on those that I can eat to the amounts
allowed on my diet.

I am not perfect and this took awhile. I started some of it before I learned I
was diabetic. I read Dr. Phil’s weight loss book a few years ago. It really
helped me figure out my mental stuff. Maybe you could look into that. Our
library has one so maybe that is an option for you. Even after reading that and
taking the diabetes ed. class I could not quite figure out exactly what I was
supposed to eat. My MIL had bought the Southbeach diet book. She had offered
to loan it to me. I didn’t want to at the time. It turned out that when I
asked to borrow it this time she gave it to me. I wanted it just for the
recipes. Well I read it and it made sense to me. From it I figured out how I
can structure a meal so that it is healthy for me and for my family.

eating time

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Hey guys. I know everyone says to eat at like 30 minutes after taking the
byetta, I can’t do that, I am way too nauseated. I usually can’t eat from 2 to
4 hours after I take it and I get heartburn so bad sometimes I just want to cry.
Do you think that I should try to eat 30 min after the shot anyway?

nausea

Monday, December 19th, 2005

Hi Tammy,

I am just two weeks into using the Byetta. I have a friend at work who has been
on it for almost a year and his advice has helped me. The first week I was
throwing up and having diarrhea. I could barely eat anything. This week has been
better. I still have some nausea in the morning, but I have found that if I eat
about a half hour to an hour after the shot, I can tolerate it better. He also
advised me to eat something like a baked potato and other carbs at dinner. That
has helped too. I can handle most things during the day. Morning is the worst. I
take Tums and Pepcid if it gets bad. I still throw up every now and then. No
rhyme or reason to that yet. But I actually ate 2/3 of an apple at lunch
yesterday. I’m losing weight fairly rapidly, but I’m not eating much during the
course of a day. Hang in there. He’s done really well with it and that gives me
hope.

byetta approved in europe

Monday, December 19th, 2005

In the endo section of medscape, the european approval body now lists
byetta for prescription with the same definition as in the usa,ie. as
adjunct with other diabetes drugs for those at max dosages. What is the
status of the approval in canada?
