Started 100mg of Januvia today

I guess I was volunteered as a pioneer by my doctor today. As you may
know, (since I have sort of disappeared from this group), I gave up on
Byetta about 4 months ago after valiant attempts to keep it going for
8 months inspite of greate discomfort and loss of about 12 lbs (I am
now back to weighing about 154lbs, which is still underweight for my
height of 6 feet).

Anyway, the doctor started me with 100mg of Januvia as of today. He
told me to cut my Glucovance by 1000mg (I have been taking 2000mg
every day)and he told me to increase my dose of Glucophage to 1000mg
from 500mg per day. So, essentially he cut 10mg of glipizide and 500mg
of Glucophage from my system. Also, he told me to stop injecting 6
units of insulin that I have been injecting. Other than that, he told
me to keep all the other meds the same: Precose, Actos, Altace, Zetia,
Lipitor. Doctor’s comment: "Januvia is a milder form of Byetta with no

side effects like nausea and weight loss" that I had experienced with
Byetta.

This morning, at the doctor’s office, my HbA1C was 6.6

My fasting blood glucose was 112 at 8:30am and it shot up to 221, 3
hours after a late, large breakfast of 3 egg omelet, hash browns and 2
slices of toast. At 5 pm about 3 hours after a very light lunch of
half a tomato soup and a large sausage, blood glucose has shot down to
76.

Will keep you posted on how Januvia does its wonders. So far, no
nausea or anything of that sort.

    Hi,

I have some questions, if you don’t mind… When were you diagnosed, and are
you type 1, type 2, or LADA?

    Hugs,
    Paula

    I am Type 2 ( maybe Type 1.5 now). I was diagnosed in 1994 about 12
years ago. What does LADA stand for?

  3. Adeline Calhoun Says:

Monty, What do you mean by Januvia being ‘a milder form of Byetta?’ Do you
mean it does not lower your bg’s as well, or do you mean it has less side

  4. Neva Marjory Says:

I was quoting the doctor and he meant that there will be less side
effects (nausea and stomach unease) and he also indicated that it’s
effect of zapping the BGs level down is not as strong as a Byetta
injection. He said that his clinic was involved in some of clinical
trials and it works very well.

Here is the continuation of my report. Today is the second day of
    taking 100mg Januvia.

Looks like Januvia really kept my BG low after lunch. So much so, that
it was 62 around 6:30pm and I had to miss my Yoga class because I had
to rush to eat something to get my BG up. At bedtime, the BG measured
    105. I had had a decent size dinner with a large tortilla, with cheese
and also some peas and a small potato. So, I was beginning to get
worried that I might have a low while I was sleeping and I promptly

drank a cup of milk just to make sure I would be "safe" at night while
sleeping. This morning my fasting BG was 204! Wow! It had shot up and
I thought Januvia helped in controlling release of glucagon. My BG
level is 139 about 4 hours after a breakfast of omelet and one slice
of toast with tea. Of course, I took 100mg of Januvia at breakfast as
    was recommended.

I will keep you guys posted on Januvia’s magic on my BG levels.
