Overeating
Hello everyone.
I read in several messages do not overeat while being on Byetta.
I would like to run by you one of my meals and asking your opinion, if it is
considered overeating.
1 medium size potato and 1egg fried in 1 table spoon of peanut oil and a cup
of tea.
What would be your suggestion for a meal, please?
Thank you, Ellen.

Everyone who has lost weight on Byetta…Ellen and I seem to be on the same
wavelength. Would some of you who have lost weight share with us what a typical
day’s meals are like for you? Do you eat three meals? Six little meals? Normal
meals? Lite meals? Although I’ve lost a lot of my appetite, I have lost just a
few pounds in three months. Ellen, I wouldn’t call a potato, an egg and a cup
of tea a very big meal. In weight watchers points, it’s probably about 4-5
points. Kathy, MN

Since June 02, 2006, 28 lbs (don’t have all that much to lose-now at 168)
1st Byetta shot = 8:00am.
Breakfast at 8:30am
1 piece cinnamin raisin toast
4 oz. orange juice
1/2 banana
black coffee
Lunch 12:30pm
1/2-3/4 sandwich (tuna/ham & cheese/egg salad, depends) Generally can’t
finish the whole sandwich
diet soda
Some days 1/2 cup soup
2cnd Byetta shot = 4:00pm
supper @ 4:30-5:00pm
Today had beef stew & one piece of bread/butter dunked
other days:
1/2 potato
small portion vegetables of some kind
some sort of meat - fist sized portion
In between meals I snack on a ginger cookie or two, or several
flavor-ice pops
Night:
sometimes 1/2 bag popcorn (before 8pm)
sometimes small cup fruit cocktail
tonight cup of cocoa and 2 ginger snaps (did I say I like ginger snaps?)
Some days I have two oatmeal raisin cookies after lunch
Don’t eat all that much and the lizard keeps it that way.
I don’t have any effects at all unless I overeat.

What kind of post meal and a1c numbers do you get with this high carb
percentage diet using byetta? Have you tested the breakfast at 1 and 2
hours to find the rate of glucose fall?

Again, cardinal rule of diabetic eating: never eat carbs on their own.
There are no cardinal rules of diabetic eating, specially with Byetta on
board. Things change with it. Those that couldnt eat any carbs in the
past can now eat a moderate amount and still have good numbers. I think
that is the point of the new meds like Byetta and the new Junvia(sp)
that we can begin to live more like other people and still have good
numbers.
I personally at this point can hardly eat carbs even with fat or protein
unless there is a good amount of insulin on board. I think that after
15+ years of type 2 and being told that numbers in the 150 range were
good for so long that I have no beta cells left. I just dont process
carbs, but I still eat what I can with the insulin.

The most important thing, even more that the weight loss is how is your
BG level after eating potaotes or cinnamon toast or anything. The main
reason people are put on Byetta is to keep BG under control. the weight
loss is just a nice byproduct that some encounter. Those that go on it
specifically to lose weight may be very disappointed as that is not
something that occurs with everyone.
If you check you BG after the potato and it is within range then you are
golden, if it is high you know not to eat so much of the potato or none
at all depending on the reading.
I am not on Byetta but know that if I eat potato or bread I am going to
have to inject a lot of insulin to keep my numbers low, so I usually
dont eat them.

I have also been on insulin. Started out on NPH, then switched to UL, and now
Lantus (cartridge) and Humulog, although I don’t believe I have injected 10U of
Humalog since starting Byetta on June 2cnd, and it was used only to correct a
misdeed by me.
My nightly shot of Lantus has reduced from 28U to 12U, and the only reason it’s
at 12U is I want my morning number under 100.

Ruby,
I was wondering if you have experienced any weight loss with Byetta? I
don’t recall hearing you say before. I too, have a real problem with carbs.
Even though my numbers are okay…too many and the weight is going back up.

Demetria, I am not on Byetta. I have no insurance and I havent
convinced the doc at the free clinic that I should try it. Maybe
because I have been on at least 3 meds that have been recalled in the
past. I think he is a little leery*G* Once I convince him I will have
to see if I qualify for the PPA plan as I do with the rest of my meds.
Maybe by that time they will have gotten permission from the FDA to
keep it out of the fridge, who knows. I am not too worried about
losing weight. I have weighed 175 for the last 20 years and am pretty
comfortable with it now. If I did it wouldnt be a bad thing tho.
