Giving Advice ?
Hi All~
I have a question. We had friends over for dinner last night
and my girlfreinds husband has type 2 diabetes. He refuses to
take prescription meds he thinks he has control with using herbs
and cinnamon. My friend says he doesn’t eat right because he
will not eat through out the day and then just eats huge quanities of
food for dinner. He says he would rather die then have to inject
himself with any medication. I of course keep singing the praises of
Byetta telling him he needs to go to an Endo. And all my concerns were
confirmed when after dinner I tested my bs, it was 79, Yah! lowest
number I have seen yet. So my friend urged me to have her hubby test
so he said he would (I put my meter on "control test" so it would not
mess up my average) but here is the kicker…His bs was 506 and he says
its always high like that. So what kind of advice can you give someone
whos mindset is so against what could help them?

This fella is clearly in denial. I hope it doesn’t cost him his eyesight,
bladder control or limbs. He isn’t going to listen until he is ready. I’ll bet
he feels terrible and won’t admit it. I wish there was some magic to get him to
face his disease.

I have visions of a long departed friend, where the cut-offs began with
toes, then the front of the foot, then the whole foot, then up to the
knee. It didn’t get any further than that because he didn’t live much

My MIL had a stroke about 5 years ago. A pretty bad one. She didn’t
even know she had diabetes. Her BS was over 600 when they admitted
her (unconscious) to the ER. It took her almost a year to recover,
but she’s never really been the same.
I’m not sure what he’s getting out of not dealing with it, but he
sure has a lot to lose b/c of it.
I hope something "rocks his world" and makes him realize the
importance of his disease.

I was thinking the same thing….with a bs over 500, this man could
have a stroke or be hospitalized at any time. While that might be what
moves him to do something about it, it would be a shame if it had to
go that far. Since you know better what the risks are, you might have
to risk your friendship to get a little tough with him or persuade his
wife to get tough with him. He will probably thank you later.

I know this sounds horrible, but you cant help those who wont help
themselves. I saw it was suggested to tell the wife to do the shopping and
change what she buys, but then if he doesnt like it, he can always sneak
around while she isnt there and eat what he wants. I think until he wants to
accept it all that can be done is to pray.

Maybe telling him about diabetes related erectile disfunction… gotta think
like a man to reach a man. LOL

If he’s reading over 500 most of the time I’d bet that the man part is a
figment of the past.

Carl, you just cannot leave this group. I don’t care how healthy you are!
(Congratulations, by the way. Your post was very inspiring) You are so funny
and witty!

Oh, awright, I’ll monitor and make smart ass comments from time to time as
the mood strikes. No Warranty Express or Implied. No Purchase Necessary.
Void Where Prohibited. Write for a Free Game Piece.
I was called down to do a Byetta pep talk with one of our patients today.
She is on the 10 pen and enjoying the Lizard Love. I suggested Pepto and
lots of bipedal movement. I doubt she’ll take the exercise advice, but I was
having a crappy day and I felt fantastic after that, so it was worth the
trip downstairs - plus I run the back stairs as a mood lifter and I was down
5lbs from yesterday, so what have I to complain about? The weight loss, by
the way, was not due to my recent eating habits - the wait staff at Ruby
Tuesday last night can attest to that - I made 12.5 trips to the salad bar -
I would have made 13, but the Ruby Tuesday Bouncers tackled me en route -
seems there is an unposted 12 trip max - I didn’t see that disclaimer in the
menu, I tell ya. No, doubtless it is fluid in my knee from all the bike
riding of late (bought a 2007 Raleigh Mohave 5.0 in Clockwork Orange Thurs
and I won’t get off it - girlfriend is threatening to leave and I really
liked her, dammit). I did have a most excellent session at the gym this
evening. I told my trainer I wasn’t feeling the love and I wanted to turn
the heat up a bit. Well, at boy lit a fire this evening and I still feel it.
Of course I biked to Blockbuster and CVS when I got home, too.
Ok, I KNOW there is SOMETHING at Walmart I need to go bike to get tonight
before bed.

Fortunately I have yet to be found basking in the sun on a rock. Naked.
Well, ok, there was this one time, at band camp —
Seriously, Fitness is my New Religion and I pray at that altar all but
daily, a dedicated disciple - which is the singlemost reason I am off the
insulin and Byetta after ~9 months - "I want it" ain’t enough, baby. My
mantra is - "What Do You Want, and What Are You Willing to Give Up For It?"
- ain’t nothing good in life free. My beta cells may very well burn out
(diagnosed 11/88), and I may become Type I, but I will NEVER be Type II (Fat
Boy Diabetes) again. No chance. I had the cable tv disconnected ($46/month)
and added the Gold’s Gym membership ($50/month) and it has been *SO* much
better an investment. My 60g Ipod and no television (don’t get broadcast tv
here) have been HUGE in getting me out and about daily. Besides, not having
Brian Williams in my living room every night telling me how bad off the
world is has been great for my mood. I can get my Daily Dose of Depression
off usatoday.com and cnn.com easily and quickly enough - then run the back
stairs a couple of times to get it out of my head.

Hmmmh! Very interesting. Not much has been said about the psychological side
effects of Lizzie, but apparently there is an obsessive/compulsive component
to it! *G*

Carl, Again…PLEASE don’t leave us. I’ve been so discouraged about lack of
weight loss and you have really put me in the right place…my place! It’s all
up to me and I’m lucky to have Gilly as a partner (and everyone here) in this
journey to good health. Thanks. Kathy, MN
