NEED FOOD AND NAUSEA ADVICE

I have been on Byetta since July 28th, and have been on the 10mcg
pen now since Sept. 6th. I am having more and more problems with
nausea, and have tried all the recommended nausea treatments that I
have read on this website. I have tried changing the location of
the injection, and timing before I eat. I have lost 20 lbs., but am
finding it difficult to eat food. I don’t know what else to try to
eat for breakfast, as even dry toast is now making me sick. I
cannot tolerate eggs, any dairy products, anything sweet, dry
cereal, hot cereal, fruit, etc. I have even tried Glucerna. I wake
up every morning starving….and take my shot, and am unable to
tolerate food. Finally around noon, the nausea subsides enough to
eat lunch and I am okay. Then I go through the same ordeal now at
the evening meal. Nothing appeals to me, and it is difficult to
figure out what to eat that will stay down. I don’t enjoy eating
and then "yakking" an hour later. I used to be able to eat some

cooked vegetables and fruit, and very little protein, but now I
can’t keep it down. I am only on Byetta as the doctor took away the
Glyburide because I was having bad lows in the evenings when I was
on the 5 mcg Byetta and Glyburide combined. I am contemplating just
going back on the 5mcg dosage, since I still have an unopened 5mcg
pen. I had nausea for about three weeks on the 5 mcg pen, and had
about one good week of feeling decent before starting the 10 mcg
dose. In nearly a month on the 10 mcg dosage, I seem to be getting
worse instead of better adjusted to it. Since I feel ill all the
time, I have been unable to exercise…and am really tired all the
time. I am not a quitter, so I am finding myself really struggling
with the life changes that this medication is imposing on me…..I
am always busy, work full time, always going and doing things,
travelling, wanting to spend time with my children and grandchildren
and husband, and I find myself only wanting to sit around or go to
bed because I am too sick feeling to do anything else. I welcome
your suggestions….because I am tired and hungry. I don’t seen how
I can eat healthy when I cannot tolerate most food.

Rae, I couldn’t handle the 10 pen…way too much nausea. I went back to the 5
pen and have been doing just fine. In fact, I am on vacation and missed my
morning shot two or three times with no effect. My numbers have been fine for
me. I’m high in the morning (fasting), eg. 120. Yesterday, after eating
breakfast — no shot — my bg was 140. Other than that, my pp bg has been
    around 80. Kathy

    Kathy,
Thanks for your note. I have noticed that my bg is not as good using the 10
pen as it was using the 5 pen, but thought it might have to do with taking so
much stuff to try to conteract the nausea. My weight loss was real slow on the
5 pen, and really did better on the 10 pen, but then I am sick all the time, and
have been unable to keep several meals down. What is strange is that my morning
nausea seems worse on weekends, and I have evening nausea every night during the
week, but it is better on the weekends. I am curious how your weight loss has
been using the 5 pen. Your bg are doing great. How long have you been on
    Byetta?

    Rae,
You’re telling my story to a T! That was my existence in the
beginning. I lost 35 pounds because I couldn’t eat and threw up what I
did manage to get down. I managed to keep going until my next Endo
visit and told her about my problem. She backed me off to the 5mcg
pen and I’ve had a much easier time. I still occasionally get a tiny
bit of nausea but nothing even CLOSE to what it was before. My
numbers are still just as good and I can start making efforts to eat
well when before it was just what I could keep down!

How odd. I’ve noticed the same thing about the morning shot on weekends. It
seems to hit me much, much harder than during the week. Maybe because during the
week I take the shot, eat something and then hit the road to work. No time then
to worry about anything other than making sure some idiot in a truck doesn’t end
my life premturely. On the weekend I have more time to ponder how I feel.

    Rae,
Maybe you need to go back to the 5mcg dose. Some find the 10 too much
and go back to the 5. If it works and you arent getting the bad side
    effects, go for it

Rae, This stuff is hard to figure out, isn’t it? I find that keeping a really
detailed journal of my bg’s, when I take the shots, what I eat and when, has
really been helpful. I’m part of the Byetta weight loss group, so I need those
stats for that and they will be helpful when I see my endo in December. My
weight loss hasn’t been very good, although I did happen to lose three pounds
this past week. I’ll get it all figured out, though. In the meantime, I’m so
happy with my bg numbers, I’m satisfied to wait for the weight loss. I know it
will come. I just don’t have the appetite I used to have and that has to be
because of the Byetta. All I’m saying, Rae, is that going back to the 5 pen
until that’s working well for you and then going to the 10, if you really need
to, might be an option for you. That’s my plan, I figure 1) I might not even
need to go to the 10 and 2) my body might be better able to take the 10 after a
number of months on the 5, rather than just the one. I’ve been on Byetta since
July 1. One month on 5mg, three weeks on the 10 and, now, about six more weeks
on the 5. I’ve lost about ten pounds in those 13 weeks and my bg’s are in what

I consider the normal range. I’m tired, but that’s getting better. As that
get’s better, I figure I’ll have more energy to get out and walk and that will
help with the weight. Keep your spirits high. This group will be a great help
    throughout, too. Kathy
