carb counts

I just stopped at Jamba Juice and bought a small Brighteyed Blueberry
with an energy boost. While waiting for it, I checked out the
nutritional information. That drink, made with lowfat yogurt, has 55
grams of carbs and 2 grams of fiber for a net 53 grams of carbs!
Thank heavens for the lizard because I only took a couple sips of it.
That was a big wake up for me. Go Twins!

I love those fruit smoothie sort of things, but they are high in carbs.
Practically a whole meal worth of carbs for me in one. Sometimes I do
splurge and have one for breakfast, but I don’t feel it’s as healthy because
    of the sugar.

V8 Splash diet juices are only 2g sugar and 3g carb. They do not taste to bad
    either.

I make my own, using frozen, unsweetened fruit, mostly strawberries, a little
diet juice, usually Diet Snapple Cran-Raspberry (when I can actually find it!)
and some splenda. I use one of those stick mixers, less mess, and make my
smoothie right in the glass. Super yummy, and filling enough to be a meal, but
probably a LOT healthier than something from a shop.

Smoothies are great and a good treat for kids as well as diabetics if you make
them without all that sugar. I make one using fresh strawberries, lowfat/low
car strawberry yogurt, skim milk and crushed ice. You could also cut back on
the yogurt and crushed ice and use vanilla ice cream made with splenda. The
main ingredients are the strawberries and the milk, the rest is just to thicken
it. My kids LOVE these and overall they are healthy with lower carb fruit and
the protein from the milk and yogurt without the fat. You could also add
protein powder or some other nutritive mix in. I’ve heard you can use soft tofu
too without bothering the flavor because tofu just takes on the taste of
whatever you mix it with. It could be used as a thickener as well. I make a
batch in the blender and we’ll have it for a refreshing snack in lieu of a trip
to Dairy Queen in the summer!

Basically a smoother is a fruit, milk, yogurt and ice combo, you vary the
flavors and quantity of each to get what you want. Places like Aldi’s and Sams

sell sacks of frozen fruit at really good prices. I would say in my strawberry
version I use the equivalent of about 1 1/2 cups of whole strawberries, cut up.
