Lipitor Question & My Info

Hi, I may be mistaken but I thought I read a post not too long ago
about someone that went off Lipitor. When I read that post I took it
that they went off of it because of weight gain. Can anyone tell me
if they have had any problems with Lipitor? My endo automatically put
me on it when I was diagnosed with Type 2 about four months ago. I
also thought I read somewhere that doctors usually put people on
cholesterol lowering drugs when they are diagnosed with diabetes.
From what I remember from my blood tests I didn’t have high
cholesterol. I don’t like taking it because I have to take so much
other stuff. I hope to be able to also go off Toprol after I lose
more weight. I just turned 44 on 9/9/06 and I’m only 5ft 2in and a
whopping 188lbs, but that’s down from about 210 I was when diagnosed.
I had never been but a few pounds overweight until about 9 years ago
my weight started going up and up. My endo figures I was at least pre-
diabetic since then. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid about 10 years

ago. (I recently read an article that said if someone is diagnosed
with a thyroid disorder then they should be refered to an endo and be
tested for diabetes and such.) I feel a little resentful at my old GP
for not sending me to an endo when he discovered my throid problem,
which come to think of it he didn’t diagnose it his NP did when I
went in with a sinus infection and she looked back at my last
bloodwork. Then he started prescribing the Levoxl. Anyway here’s what
all I take Levoxl, Hydrochlorot, Effexor XR, Toprol XL, Byetta 10,
Fortamet 1000mg, Xanax XR 2mg, Nexium 40mg, Lipitor 10mg, Coated
Asprin 81mg, I am also on an estrogen patch (menopuase). So, I’m
already a walking pharmacy and would like to drop what meds I can.

    Hi Saundra,
I hadn`t heard of a Lipitor weight gain connection till you brought
it up. I Googled it and it seems to be a rare side effect. But back to
why your DR. put you on Lipitor if your chlosterol wasnt high. We
diabetics need our chlosterol to be lower than people without diabetes.
I am taking the spices cinnamon and cloves and they seem to be helping
my chlosterol some. With my total chlosterol down ~15 and my good
    chlosterol up ~20.
I also noticed the antidepresent you take. I also take
antidepresents but find exercise helps my depression as much
    or more than the meds.

Woody type 2 just starting Byetta

I went off of Lipitor because of weight gain. My PCP
doesn’t think the Lipitor did it and I am not sure,
either. My weight gain started when I started taking
Lipitor but it may have been cooincidence.

I decided not to take it anymore because my LDL was 98
    and HDL 96. With a ratio like that, I don’t think I
need an LDL of 70. I have started taking policosanol
and it has lowered my LDL but not down to 70.

Yes, that is generally the case. However, with my
LDL/HDL ratio and great blood pressure (100/60) and
"no" history of heart disease in the family (although
my 80 year old father who has had diabetes for 45
years recently had a stent), I don’t think I need it.

Re the anti-depressant… I take Effexor to control
menopausal symptoms, not depression. I am rarely
depressed and if so, only situationally. However, my
doc and I didn’t want me to go on hormones for the
menopausal syptoms and Effexor works for this — no
    more sleeplessness or temperature issues!
