Vegan diet may reverse diabetes symptoms
I took a look at the full research article, details matter which are often
glossed over in news reports. The researchers conclude much of the results
were due to the greater fiber content of the vegan diet not the absence per
sey of animal proteines. There is a great deal of research relating to the
benefits of fiber for a diabetic I will not go into but to say that it does
have considerable benefit.
In the study at hand the greater fiber meant fewer calories consumed and
greater weight loss. Weight loss alone can cause the a1c and other
benefits resulting from the diet. Similar benefit comes also from a higher
fiber diet and in this case combined with weight loss.
Saturated fats do seem to be related to greater insulin resistance
independant of animal or not source,ex. hydrogenated veggie oils so common.
Avoiding high saturated animal protein sources and substituting poly and
mono saturated fats for saturated fat sources and substituting fiber rich
sources of carbs for refined sources would in my mind produce similar
results. Research on such diets has been done and could be cited in
support.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the principle author is a very strong
animal rights advocate so the vegan spin seems to me a cause for caution as
to interpretation of results. Also the people ate what they wanted with
little control over what was eaten. Substituting typical vegan recipes
taught to the vegan group automatically meant greater fiber at levels that
could have been reached in the non-vegan group for a much better comparison
study of substituting animal protein for veggie proteins alone. As it
stands, the results say something about fiber and level of fat saturation
and not source of protein
