Hi everyone… I have some questions
My hubby is a Byetta user. I have a few questions.
First of all, have to say we LOVE this stuff. His A1C dropped from
9 something to 7.2 and we are thrilled. Could be lower, but this is
OK.
We have seen ZERO weight loss. Does weight loss with this happen to
most people?
Another question…. he seems to have the "pre-dawn" early rise in
his BG. I think I remember someone once saying a snack before
dinner like a bran muffin or something helps. Any suggestions?
His Endo suggested maybe adding insulin in the evenings, but I am
confused, as he is making insulin, just not using it. Why inject
more if he is not using what he has? And does insulin cause weight
gain? I think I was told that it does. She said she wanted to
recheck him in 4 months and see how his A1C is and we will talk more
about the insulin then.
He also experiences a LOT of nausea in the evenings still. He says
it is not that bad, but it is enough for him to not eat dinner, but
then snack just before bed on junk then he is high in the mornings,
as he does not take his shot because he did not eat a full meal. I
am wondering if the same results in decreased BG is happening on the
5mg pen as with the 10mg pens? I just wonder if the 10 is too much
for him. (he is a big guy, so I can’t see this being the case, but
one never knows I guess).
Okay, maybe that was not a couple of questions… more than a
couple. Sorry, but this group has always been most helpful, and I
thought I’d come right here and ask. (I missed his last doctors
appointment, so I am full of questions!).
Thanks so much!

Hi, and welcome to the group.
I started on the 5mcg, then moved to the 10 after two weeks. I was on 60
units of Lantus and Humalog combined before byetta. I then used humalog
as needed for when I hypercarbed. I’ve now gone down to the 5mcg because
I was experiencing hypos on it, without using insulin. I’ve lost 43 lbs
so far, and am a standstill for a few months.
I had higher fasting numbers than what I wanted. So I added 3 units of
Lantus in the evening and my numbers went from 110 to in the 90s.
I still make insulin, but was very insulin resistant before byetta. I
felt I needed a boost in the evening to cover the morning fasting
numbers. Everyone is different, but don’t rule out insulin, especially
if it’s a small amount. I’m not gaining weight on the 3 units I’m
taking. I was gaining on the 60, though.
Hope this helps.
