Finally testing and the results

Well, I finally got a meter from my Endo and got my RX filled for the
test strips and lancets.

My morning readings have been 159, 132, 141, 139 & 147. After meal
readings 96, 104, 108, 118 & 92.

I want to get those morning numbers down. Any suggestions? I’ve been
on Byetta 10mg for a little over 3 weeks. I have lost 10 lbs. Been
very nauseated, even had the dry heaves when I got to work this morning
- Just lovely. lol I find it’s very hard to stay low carb when I can’t
eat and it’s all I can do to sip on some ginger-ale, 7-up etc. and
nibbble on some soda crackers. Those things are all carbs. But they do
help me feel better.

I know the Metformin is supposed to work with the Byetta but I don’t eat

a lot for breakfast - would it be wrong to take the Byetta with
breakfast and take the Metformin with my larger lunch meal? Then at
dinner take the Met and the Byetta together? It just seems wrong that I
am having a bigger meal at lunch with no medication. But if I wait and
push the Morning Byetta to lunch then it gets to be to late for the
evening dose and meal. We are supposed to wait 6 hours inbetween right?
I think I did take them closer once and got sick.

Thanks for any suggestions~ Tami

Me, too, Andrew. And it doesn’t take a lot of Lantus, either. I take 3
units at bedtime and my fasting numbers are in the 90s. Just curious,
how many units do you take?

I am thinking the same thing, I haven’t noticed much of any changes, BUT my BG#s
are finally going down. I tested about an hour ago and my Bg#s were 120 and
thats the lowest that they have been for atleast 6 months. I am so relieved, My
wife and I are finally expecting after trying for over 12 years and now I have
some hope that I’ll live to see her grow up.

Wow, do you really think you can drop 60 lbs in the
next 16 weeks, even on Byetta? That is fast.

BTW, I wonder if Byetta 5 is even working on me. I
don’t get any nausea, and my appetite isn’t affected
much. I haven’t weighed in several days, but I don’t
think I’m losing weight (since my appetite isn’t

reduced much). I’m trying to be patient and finish
out my first month on B5, and then see how B10 works
for me. Oh, and my morning numbers aren’t appreciably
    lower, either. Sigh.

Can you share your program for losing 50 pounds by
    Christmas?

Want a buddy to do it with?

The 5mcg pen had no effect on me. No nausea, no
decreased appetite, no lower morning BGs. After 2
weeks, I switched to 10. Still no nausea and no
decreased appetite. Morning BGs are lower but not
where I want them. Post prandials are good (relative
to preprandial and sometimes even lower than
preprandial.) I talked to Byetta customer service.
They said Byetta was not designed to help with morning
numbers but I know it has with some on this list. I
am hoping that since I am working on exercising more
and losing weight, the results of those efforts
combiend with the Byetta and metformin will get me
back where I need to be.

    Gary:

How long were you on Byetta before you started seeing
morning BGs drop? If I start high, I often stay high
all day so morning BGs are key for me.

  7. Irwin Mayme Says:

This sounds like fun. How do we set this up so we don’t inundate the
group with all our fasting numbers, daily diet and exercise notes?

Emailing each other would be great. What we ate,
exercise, how we feel, the good, bad and ugly. I don’t
weigh every day — just quarterly when I go to the
doctor’s office. Weighing more often makes me nuts.
When I lost 80 or so pounds a couple years ago, that’s
    what I did. (Too bad I gained it back… I didn’t
think I was overeating but portion sizes may have
drifted up. I also started on Lipitor–which I am not
longer on — at that time.)

I am not on a diet per se but I do try to eat healthy,
low carb. If I am to lose weight, I need to keep my
calories at no more than 1500/day. I have not felt

restricted doing this in the past but sometimes my
    portions start drifting up.

Do I recall correctly that you use insulin in addition
to Byetta? I would like to eat less meat and more
high protein veggies (such as beans) but find that
they spike me if I eat more than 1/4 c at a time. I
also have not been able to get away with eating as
much fruit as you do. When you first started your
vegetarian (perhaps vegan?) regime, did you BG
temporarily spike? Was there some sort of adjustment
period? Any hints on how to start?

I am hopeful that Byetta will permit me to eat a
little more of these foods. I actually ate an entire
giant peach the other day with my lunch and my BG was
    lower than when I started.

Sorry about your loss. Join us when you get back.
    Have a safe trip.

  13. Irwin Mayme Says:

Alyne, I can eat beans without much of a spike. White bread products are
    killers, though.

I find I have to stick to around 1,000 or less to lose any weight. After
moving down to the 5mcg, I find I have to be very carefuly about how
much I eat, as the appetite suppressing qualities of the 10 aren’t there.

Andrew, please count me in on the Weight Loss Club. Just email me with the
perameters. I’m looking forward to it! Thanks. Kathy

If there are just a few of us, we can do it using regular e-mail. If
there are more than 5, I suggest either another group, or use a
    database in this group.

  15. Francesca Carr Says:

I’ve been trying to locate the first post about the weight loss
club. We are still having family reunion things going on here (some
relatives from Europe are staying for a month. We are in week three
now) and I missed a lot of posts.

I lost another pound this morning. This is wonderful because I had a
difficult time staying on track during all these buffet parties,
picnics, etc. I was letting myself eat more carbs since the Byetta
would control the bg very well. But I realized that unless I eat low
low carb, I personally don’t lost weight. Now I am back on track. It
took three days to do it. Thursday we are having dinner with a 90
year old woman who will cook a magnificent dinner for her three
guests and I probably won’t be able to eat the dessert. I debated
about telling her ahead of time, but I realized that it would
distress her more than telling her at the time that I would only

have tea or coffee and no dessert.

How will the weight loss club work? What are the goals?

I am feeling better than I have in six years and my knees are much
better since I lost 30 pounds. Getting diagnosed was the best thing
that happened to me in years since it let me get the perscription
for Byetta and made me really serious about losing weight.

    Kristi

  16. Francesca Carr Says:

Andrew, where shall we email this? And maybe, if there are not too many
people, and we are brief, we could post it to the list for inspiration?
Or should we post it somewhere else. Just say where.

I think 60 pounds off by Christmas would not be healthy, even though
men are supposed to be able to lose faster. Thirty, or at the most 40
would be a more reasonable goal…Something important in meeting goals
is to make them realistic so you aren’t setting yourself up for feeling
like a failure when you are actually having a success.

  17. Irwin Mayme Says:

Andrew, if there are just a few of us, perhaps we could post to the list
once a day. It won’t clog up the mailing that much, and may inspire
others. If the club gets too big, we could go email. Just a thought…

  18. Louise Kassie Says:

yes, creating a new list sounds great!

    Just my .02

    Shauna
(who has lost 13-15 lbs in the last 6 weeks or so - and without Byetta as it
    STILL isn’t available in Canada)

  19. Patricia Petty Says:

I want to be in the weight loss club too.

There are several people who want to be in the Weight Loss Club.
There are no formal rules, rather it is several people who want to
help keep either on track. We will e-mail what we ate and did for
exercise the day before. We will not post to the list so we don’t
clutter up the list. We might post a summary at the end.

For what it is worth, my goals are good sugar control, and to lose 60
pounds by Christmas (even though that will be near impossible).

If you want to be part of it, send me a note. I will volunteer to
coordinate the thing. (what have i gotten myself into? LOL).

    Andrew

  20. Debra Willene Says:

It might be good for some people on the list if everyone posted what
they eat and such, but we regularly get folks that drop off the list
because of too many posts that dont directly relate to byetta.

    Just my 2 pennies worth
