Strident Controversy
Oh Marsha — don’t leave. Do what I do — only read the list on line
and skip over things that don’t appear to warrant reading.
But Andrew — I truly agree that your position on the number of things
that cannot be discussed is distressing.
While this list may be about Byetta, the REAL thing that unites people
on this list is that they are Type 2 diabetics. And Byetta is the
first wave of what may herald real breakthroughs for treatment of the
disease.
And we SHOULD discuss things that are beyond how to carry Byetta on
long trips, whether to reuse pen tips, and what other drugs work with
Byetta. These are INFORMATIONAL things more so than discussion points.
Every new person (myself included) had needle questions and logistic
questions — this information is partially on the links page, and is
good to know.
But beyond that, we need to face facts about Byetta. NONE of us
acquired Type 2 diabetes because we ate well. NO ONE. Type 2 is
affecting younger and younger people BECAUSE of what they eat. Type 2
can be controlled by diet and exercise alone if one gets the weight
off — Byetta is not, in and of itself, a cure. And while there may be
different ways of eating, if you eat high protein and eat 3000
calories a day of high-fat animals, you won’t get thin, you won’t get
healthy. Ditto a 3000 calorie daily plan of white flour, white sugar
and other bad carbs.
We need to discuss meal plans. We need to discuss eating LESS no
matter what food plan we eat. We need to discuss exercise. We actually
should discuss the politics of Byetta — simply because the more
people who know what is politically involved, the more people who can
contact their elected reps and get $$$$ spent on the right research,
the right programs to support people who cannot afford drugs, and
possibly a true cure.
With no "controversy" there can be no sharing of ideas.
If all we do is share the same info over and over, what is the point?
