Rules for this Diet:
*If you eat something and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories.
*If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar
are canceled out by the diet soda.
*When you eat with someone else, calories don’t count if you do not eat
more than they do.
*Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot
chocolate,brandy,toast and Sara Lee Cheesecake.
*If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.
*Movie related foods do not have additional calories because they are part
of the entertainment package and not part of one’s personal fuel.
Examples: Milk Duds, buttered popcorn, Junior Mints, Sour Patch Kids, and
Tootsie Rolls.
*Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking causes calorie
leakage.
*Things licked off knives and spoons have no calories if you are in the
process of preparing something.
*Foods that have the same color have the same number of calories.
Examples: spinach and pistachio ice cream; mushrooms and mashed
potatoes.
*Chocolate is a universal color and may be substituted for any other food
color.
*Anything consumed while standing has no calories. This is due to gravity
and the density of the caloric mass.
*Anything consumed from someone else’s plate has no calories since the
calories rightfully belong to the other person and will cling to his/her
plate. (We ALL know how calories like to cling!)

Can we say "eBay". I search and can get new / good expiration dates on foods on
ebay for a fraction of the price. I have 2-3 weeks of food for $45.00 Enough for
our trial un and see how the food taste and if it can help with the BG and
weight…the numbers are really scaring me….how do I get this thru his
head…they suck…he does know but he tries a little and then just dismisses it
and eats all the wrong things, its a way of life…its not just for a few
days…a cheat here and there…its not bad…aaauuurgh……
Just curious, Lillian, don’t you find Nutri System a very, very expensive
plan as compared to making wise choices at a regular grocery?

I’m could go "grocery food" - good choices..but we need structure and prepared
portions…with the Nutri System…we picked out….he picked out what he would
eat for the day….and I said that’s all…work in nuts, fruit, weight watchers
sugarfree ice cream in for snacks or extras..but can I let him out of my sight
and keep him away from deli’s or convenience stores ???..we tried atkins last
year…he did GREAT….BG in 140-170…great for him…but he complained he
didn’t feel good and was hungry…and dropped 10 lbs in 3 months..then stopped
the diet. He’s dropped 15 lbs since starting byetta (almost done with second
pen)..but BG still suck…was actually better with 5 pen then 10 pen…but he’s
working more (contactor season..busy in summer)but stressed a little more (he
runs his own construction company)…some days..he eats "good" and sugars are
still high 200’s….I can’t figure. I’m desperate and scared for him.
Me-myself I come from a long line of heart diseased-overweight diabetics….I
will not let that happen to me..I fight everyday to watch myself..my aunts and
grandmothers are all dead,, my brothers, sister & cousins are all hefty in
size, my twin brother has my figure when I was 7 months pregnant with my last
child & my little brother is already Type II at 33 yrs old. At 44yrs I’m
fighting to get back to my just under 120 lb weight before my 3 yr olds
birth…12 pounds to go…. being a waitress with hot steamy crunchy french
fries available..its not easy… I used to have a little coffee and cream with
my sugar…at 39 I change things I only drink water, plain ice tea, fresca,
minute maid sugarfree lemonade..(good stuff )and coffee with only 2% milk….big
change for me and just getting rid of regular soda was awesome. I have a goal
and try to get there…even if I don’t make it…I try everyday to reach that
point…its already become a way of life for me…I just grew up looking at my
relatives and watched them all die..
I set goals for my husband…BG under 200 for a week straight…, I’ll set new
ones when we meet that. I will have to lock fridge and cut off kitchen at 7-8pm
(he’s a terrible late night snacker)I’ll see what other tricks I can squeeze
in..I pulled the old little spoon trick this morning..it took him longer to eat
that itty bitty portion of cereal that nutri system has it would have been gone
in a heart beat with the tablespoon he usually uses….he did okay, this was
7am…he grabbed a slice of cheese & cup of coffee at 9am…out the
door..should I follow him to job site???..he’ll be okay actually…its the
before dinner starve & scavenge for goodies (I have lined up..a few marinated
hot peppers stuffed w/small cheese square & procshutta (ham..can’t spell it) and
after dinner snacking. I need good snack ideas for that I’m afraid the granola
bar & nutri system pretzels won’t cut it..don’t know…but watermelon isn’t one
of them..312 BG in the am.
Lillian, he is the only one who can change his thinking. Sounds like
you are doing the best you can. Don’t beat yourself up over this.

It is LOCKED. Our son is autistic and we have locks and stop signs and circles
with crossed line thru them everywhere… I thing this says…this is where the
good stuff is instead of deterring him…and Frank Sr knows how to open the
lock..ssshhh…so does Frank Jr…he figured it out…it only stops me…I have
a hard time with the locks…LOL
Hey, if the husband (forgot his name) agrees, a padlock on the fridge
door is a great idea. Or get one of those pay toilet thingies, so he
has to buy his snacks. But I like the idea of a lock better. With a
siren and strobe light when the door is opened.

I have to beat myself over this..we have been together about 7+ yrs and have a 3
yr old and I want him around a long time…I look at it as a matter of life and
death sometimes..we were just married in May ( yea…eloped ran away at spur of
moment to Niagara Falls.. we always wanted to do that..so we did …. 5 hrs
running to get there..) and I love him too much to watch him kill
himself…he’s big enough to take care of himself…I just need to figure out
how to do it for him and make him think he’s the boss ..he really doesn’t know
how…. as far as what it good and bad..like reminding him…one slice of
toast..okay….but are you really gonna eat 3 slices, that’s not lunch…bread
is starch , starch turns to sugar..he’s getting the idea….he asked me to look
for low carb or weight watchers bread….I still need to get it thru…. bread
is his enemy (bread, bagels, muffins..his favorites)…but I’ll settle for
better bread for that nutri system hamburger patty and veggie sloppy joe. I
teach him nutrition daily
Hey can we put up photos ??? So we know who we are talking to??? I want to do a
before pic…(our wedding pic 2 weeks before byetta.)
Lillian, I go gaga over nuts. They are fairly low glycemic, fairly
high fat (probably why they are low glycemic), and crunchy, which is
very satisfying. When he gets home, why don’t you have him test his
glucose, eat 2 ounces of nuts, and have him test an hour later. That
will tell you if nuts are a good snack.
Best of luck, but as I said, don’t YOU beat YOURSELF up over this.
Only he can make it work.

Lillian,
A lot of people like pork rinds as snacks and they are crunchy and
flavorful. They even come with different flavors, I guess.
I never liked them but you might try them for his late night foraging.
Maybe with some cheese or a cream cheese dip for them. Hot wings
that have no added sugar in the sauce would be easy to pop in the
microwave.
I like turkey franks for snacking.
For some reason most men arent satisfied with celery and carrot sticks
for snacks. A little deli platter of meat and cheese might keep him
happy.
You can only offer the suggestions, he is going to do as he wants to
no matter what you would like him to do. He hasnt found the motivator
yet like you have. Some never do, they have the "it wont happen to me"
outlook until "IT" does happen to them or one of their loved ones.
As much as it hurts, we cant live their lives for them.
Walk in Peace

EXACTLY Dan!
I have had to learn that no matter how good of intentions I have, My
husbands health is something that HE has to take care of. I can’t take care
of it for him. And that is very hard for me because I’m a "fixer". If
something is wrong somewhere, I want to fix it, be it hard feelings between
friends, or my hubby’s weight. But, it’s not my place. We each can fix one
person, and that is ourselves. And you would think, as hard a time as I
have fixing myself that I wouldn’t have anytime to worry about fixing other
people.
Hi Lillian,
Good on you for losing and having those goals, you will live long and
prosper. A couple of things about your hubby. Not everyone can be as goal
oriented as you are. I find goals very diffuse and of little use in my
personal life, so I understand those who have difficulty with goals. The
late night snacking thing is not unusual for insulin resistant folks. I do
not have this drive, Marsha does. It is difficult to deal with because the
body is insisting, like the plant in Little Shop of Horrors, "Feed me…"
Andrew is quite correct that he will have to make his own choices and
motivations, and you are helping, but don’t try to run his life or you will
get the opposite result from which you are seeking. Maybe providing good
late night snacks is better than locking the refrigerator. Low carb
veggies are good snacks, raw celery, carrots, broccoli and such.
Good fortune,
Dan
