off topic - please save this dog! petition

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

As a dog lover, I know you won’t mind me e-mailing you.

5 year old Saxon is a GSD police dog, in Wales, belonging to the
father of a
friend of mine, who is a police dog handler. Despite Saxon being an
excellent and loyal police dog for a number of years, and having saved
his
owner from injury or death on numourous occasions, the police force has
decided not to re-licence him as a police dog.

For no apparent reason, and despite the owner being desperate to keep
Saxon
as a dearly loved pet, the "powers that be" want him destroyed. In
their
words, it is the "RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO" !!!!

Questions about meds

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

When do you all take your other meds when you take
Byetta? I’m having problems deciding when to take my
other meds and when to take the Byetta. I take 5 mg
of Glipizide and 1000mg of Metformin twice a day. I
take these because that’s the only meds the VA will
give you for diabetes. They won’t rx Byetta so I have
to get that on my own.

I’m just not sure if I’m taking them to my best
advantage. If I get up early enough, I usally take
the glipizide along with other meds I need to take for
other problems I have, wait 20 min. take the
metformin, wait 30 min. and then inject the Byetta.

If I get up late, I take the Byetta first and then

Anyone having high bg levels with Byetta

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

Hi,

I am new to the group and read alot of the posts. I have just finished
my first month of Byetta (5mcg) and just started on a 10mcg. Though I
have had ALOT of nausea and lost 8 lbs. my bg levels have remained
high. (Sometimes over 200) This can be before or after meals and my
morning levels also remain high. I have kept the pen cold so I don’t
that’s the problem. It seems if I am having nausea and a decrease in
appetite that the pen is working.
Anybody else having this problem?

1921 Insulin isolated in Toronto

At the University of Toronto, Canadian scientists Frederick Banting
and Charles Best successfully isolate insulin–a hormone they believe
could prevent diabetes–for the first time. Within a year, the first
human sufferers of diabetes were receiving insulin treatments, and
countless lives were saved from what was previously regarded as a
fatal disease.

Diabetes has been recognized as a distinct medical condition for more
than 3,000 years, but its exact cause was a mystery until the 20th

Feature Article
On Exenatide, A Super Loser

By Carol H. Wysham, MD

More and more, we are learning that type 2 diabetes is not just about
insulin. People with type 2 diabetes may have too little of another
hormone. Normally this other hormone tells you when you have eaten
enough. If you have too little of this hormone, you may overeat. This
hormone also tells your pancreas to release insulin to cover the meal
you just ate.

Exenatide (brand name Byetta) mimics this hormone. It is injected
before breakfast and dinner. When it works well, you get the "I’m
full" signal, so you don’t overeat, and you may lose weight. Exenatide

With New Software, Medical Histories Can be Kept at Home

Lewis Ballew has diabetes and is waiting for a heart transplant. He
tried keeping track of his complicated 10-year medical history on
computer spreadsheets and lists, but he never had all his health
information in one place.

Neither did his doctors - cardiology test results, glucose levels and
prescriptions could be spread across several floors of the hospital -
until now.

Ballew now uses Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s computer
software to put all his health data on his home computer. The

Update from Dr.’s visit today

Friday, March 4th, 2005

Hi.

Well, today I had my first check up at the Dr.’s since I started byetta.
She said my blood sugars were good, and she lowered my Metformin from 500 mg
twice a day to 850 once a day. Not much of a change I know, but still it’s
lower! Also, she moved me up to the 10 pen, but I won’t be able to get it
until the 3rd of August, Cause my insurance will not pay it until then. I
had lost 5 lbs since my visit at the end of June, so I was excited about
that. Btw..Just to let y’all know..when she was writing my prescriptions
she asked me if I needed more Alcohol wipes, and I thought.well, I’m just
going to ask her. I told her that I "Knew" someone who didn’t use alcohol
wipes and injected through their clothes. She said hepatitis will live in
dried secretions for up to 3 or 4 weeks. Also, there is staph bacteria
present on your skin. Anytime you make a break in the skin, it can enter
and you can develop a staph infection. Also, there is cellulitis. Seems
