Questions about meds
When do you all take your other meds when you take
Byetta? I’m having problems deciding when to take my
other meds and when to take the Byetta. I take 5 mg
of Glipizide and 1000mg of Metformin twice a day. I
take these because that’s the only meds the VA will
give you for diabetes. They won’t rx Byetta so I have
to get that on my own.
I’m just not sure if I’m taking them to my best
advantage. If I get up early enough, I usally take
the glipizide along with other meds I need to take for
other problems I have, wait 20 min. take the
metformin, wait 30 min. and then inject the Byetta.
If I get up late, I take the Byetta first and then
usually wait for supper to take the Glipizide and
metformin. I take my other meds later and then inject
the Byetta later at night when I eat my last meal
ofthe day.
Is this ok or do you all have better suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

I expect that to change as more VA doctors even learn what it is. Got a
couple of buddies who use VA and their doctors don’t even know what it

Thanks Dave. I will try that. Also, thanks for the
link. When I went to see my PA at the VA last
November, she told me she had heard of Byetta at a
meeting, but the VA wasn’t offering it…too
expensive.Yeah, well, some politicians need less money
in their pocket and more going to vets. IMHO. I’m
going to check out the link you gave me. Liz

I expect that to change….
Hi Dave,
just checked it out. I don’t qualify. I don’t
understand why they don’t understand that insulin
makes you gain weight…lots of it. That is one of
the reasons I wanted to get off of it. I was just
hungry constantly on insulin. I see that the report
is almost a year old. I’m going to see my Dr. next
month and find out if the VA has updated their
criteria. I hope I can get across to them that
insulin is not my friend. Byetta is.

Jan, do you take the spit after you eat? Amylin says to take the spit,
then eat within the hour.

Jan, Is the order you have listed for meds and eating what you are
actually doing? I sorta hope not. To get the maximum effect from
byetta, you need to inject first and then eat within the following
hour. Many report the best appetite suppression by waiting as close
to the hour as reasonable. Pat in ID

I had a HUGE problem with nausea when I started the lizard juice, so this is
what my endo has me doing to cut the nausea. I could ask for phenergan, but that
jjunk knocks me out for 12-14 hours, and that is the 25mg pill. I monitor
burg/fire alarms for a living, and cannot be "asleep at the wheel", if you get
my drift.

Although your answer makes sense, it makes me wonder if byetta is
the right med for you. That defies the way it is intended to work.
Have you discussed that with your endo. It is designed to encourage
your body to release insulin in response to starting to eat and
avoid spikes in bg levels (the first phase insulin response that non-
diabetics have.) Pat in ID
