Anyone having high bg levels with Byetta
Hi,
I am new to the group and read alot of the posts. I have just finished
my first month of Byetta (5mcg) and just started on a 10mcg. Though I
have had ALOT of nausea and lost 8 lbs. my bg levels have remained
high. (Sometimes over 200) This can be before or after meals and my
morning levels also remain high. I have kept the pen cold so I don’t
that’s the problem. It seems if I am having nausea and a decrease in
appetite that the pen is working.
Anybody else having this problem?

If it is working, how come my bg levels have not been coming down?

Hi Janine,
What are you eating?
Are you eating a low-carb diet? A moderate carb diet? A high carb diet? Do
you eat mostly fats and proteins? Lots of fruits? Diet has a lot to do with
it.
Do you exercise?
Byetta alone will not lower BG, although it will help.
Don’t know your situation nor what you eat. For all I know you are like me and
very conservative in your intake. I know that it took about a month of the 10
mcg byetta and rigid carb control (20-30 a day) plus rigid calorie control in
order to get the BG realtively normal.
A testament to how well tight dietary control and byetta works is that although
I contracted some sort of bacterial lung infection (probably on the MBTA) my BG
was 109 this morning.
If you are not tightly controlling carb intake that may be the key. I use the
Bernstein method and while is is draconian it is what I need to use to stay
healthy. If you are already using rigid dietary control and exercise then maybe
someone else has ideas or you may want to consult with your physician.

I have been told it takes awhile for it to build up in your system and really
work.

Thanks for answering everyone. My diet is certainly not perfect. I
could do better on the carbs. I know for some people the Byetta
loweres the BG immediately. I guess I just need to give it some time
and patience along with watching carbs better.

I’ve been on it for just a few days and my early am readings are extremely high.

Marsha — where did you hear this? I use Byetta alone, and with the 5
pen it lowered BG more than Actos. My doctor has several patients
using Byetta alone, and all are doing well.

Byetta without dietary control is insufficient. I don’t mean other medications.
I mean that if you eat 500 grams of carbs a day you are going to outeat the
byetta.
Byetta is only a part of the solution. It is not meant to replace sane eating
and exercise.

AH!!
I misunderstood, and I CERTAINLY agree with you about the diet and
exercise part. Some say that food is the strongest drug we eat.
Glad we FINALLY agree on something <grin>

Even with 18 units of 70/30 am (16 pm), 1000mg metformin am & pm, and 1 hit from
a 10 pen am & pm I still have high BG, although, not as high as with 1 hit from
the 5 pen pm.
