Fwd: [Diabetes_And_Byetta] New to site and Byetta: Liver dump and A1

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

I do not think I missed a post about this liver dump, but I am very
interested to hear and learn more. Ways to defeat this problem.
Anyone willing to share some tips?

One last point about where Marsha and I could eat….

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

I know vegetarians who won’t go into places where meat is served,
because "the smell" bothers them. (Jeez)Or they complain that "all
they can get is a salad". (Lack of imagination)

Me, I’ve spent years travelling for my last jobs. I’ll eat anywhere
and find something.

One of the best meals I ever had was at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House. (I
wager that I have eaten more meals in steak houses than probably any
other vegetarian because of the people I traveled with). Anyway, I
said to the waiter that I saw they had broccoli on the menu, was it
possible that there were any other veggies around? He asked if I’d
like all greens or mixed colours, and I said "whatever the chef prefers"

They brought out white asparagus, smoked red peppers, perfectly

Fwd: [Diabetes_And_Byetta] levamir

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Ann,

Are you type 1 or type 2? Did you get any side effects from the
levemir? I have been reading that levemir is for type 1. I went to my
doctor yesterday and I asked her about levemir because I remembered
someone mentioned they were taking it and have not gained weight from
it.
She did not know the dosing of levemir which she is researching. She
is not an endo. She is my pcp. Also, I am not sure if I can take it
because I take ace inhibitors and I read something on the levemir site
of drug interactions. I do not want to quit the byetta and was
wondering if it is worth the switch to levemir from lantus.

Dave re: taking Byetta

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Hi Dave,
Just wanted to let you know that taking the Byetta and
my meds like you suggested is working well. It’s a
lot better than I was doing it before. Now I don’t
have to wait so long before I eat. That was a hassle
for me. My blood sugars are better too. Thanks for
the advice. :) Liz KS

Politics and Diabetes

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

I know this is off topic — and I’m willing to take the hit.

Last week, George Bush vetoed the embryonic stem cell legislation. He
felt it better that unused embryos be sent to the garbage than used
for research. There were not enough votes to override this first Bush
veto.

Stem cell research holds so much promise for disease cures that its
supporters are called "pro-cure".

As this political season heats up, I beseech all of you to remember
this issue, along with the other issues you consider in deciding for
whom to vote. The results of stem cell research could save your life,
or that of someone you love. While stem cell research would likely
benefit Type 1 diabetics more than type 2s, the potential is still

constipation

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

This is an embarrassing subject but is anyone else having this problem? I’m on
the 4th week of the 5 pen and I keep getting constipated. I took peri-colace,
increased the fiber and am drinking more water, and taking a stool softner but
not getting alot of relief. Can someone help?

Travelling

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

I just got back and should report that in two airports, one a "high
security risk" I had less problem getting my meds (including the
thermos) through TSA security than I did my laptop computer.

The Ice in the Stainless Thermos worked really well if I replaced ice
from 4-6 hrs (in 90 F heat)… I used a cut-down toothbrush case, a
small piece of bubble wrap and a zip-lock bag to keep the ice off the
pen and the water out of the pen.

I still probably hit close to 6-8 hours of "room temperature" time
with the pen (part of the reason is below), but it’s still working
regardless so there is some room for slop if you do your best to avoid
letting the pen get warm.

This is long, but important if you travel:

Byetta and Sun

Thursday, March 17th, 2005

Has anyone noticed Byetta making you more sun sensitive? We went out
to sail this morning and I came very close to heat stroke. Granted it
is summer and 93 degrees, but I have been out in that many times. I
got very dizzy, nauseated, shakey and thought I would pass out. It
scared both my husband and I to death! (no pun intended)It took me 2
hours to recover.I thought maybe my BS had dropped really low and I
ate a regular popsickle, though when I got home, my BS had jumped to
200. I have never had that happen to me before and the only thing I
have done differently is the Byetta.

Am I off the wall or has anyone else noticed anything like this?

6 month report

Friday, March 11th, 2005

Been taking Byetta for 6 months + now and just got back from my doctors visit.

Loss to date 34#
A1c 6.9 at beginning, 5.9 today
Insulin use dropped from
82 units Lantus daily to 40 units
8 units Humalog for every 15 grams carbohydrate
to 3 units Humalog for every 15 grams carb.
Did stop having the "full feeling" on pen number 4, but it has come back really
strong with the start of pen number 7. Sure do wonder about the consistency of
quality in the pens. 4, 5, and 6 were all recieved at the same time and 7 is a
new batch. I am sure it was working or my insulin use or I wouldn’t have been
able to keep using less, but pens number 4, 5 and 6 didn’t have the "full"
effect or even getting an upset stomach occasional like the first 3 pen did and
number 7 is again doing.
