Bad Batch of Byetta

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

I got a new Byetta 10 pen, and I took two shots from it. Both times,
the Byetta RAISED my blood sugar. I called Amlin, and they took a ton
of information, are sending a mailer so they can check the medication,
and issued a voucher for a new pen for me to pick up at the pharmacy.

They think that it is possible that something happened in the shipping
process, as they have no other reports of any problems with the lot
number that they know of.

It was pretty scary. When I took the first shot, my sugar was 125, and
about a half hour later I felt REALLY BAD so I took another reading (I
hadn’t eaten anything) and it was 190. My sugars have NEVER been that
high except for the week I was diagnosed.

It crossed my mind that if they really are having trouble filling

Traveling with Diabetic Equipment

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

I am going on a trip and have decided to use the thermos method for my
Byetta because I didn’t order the protect-all thing to have enough
time for it to arrive. But this is the first time I have flown since
being diagnosed. Can anyone tell me if I need to ask them to hand-
check my carry-on that will have my meds, my meter, test strips, and
pen needles? I wasn’t sure if the scanning devise is safe for the
meter or if it will mess it up. And do you just put the thermos
through the scanner with other stuff?
Thanks,
Saundra

Byetta and carbs

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

Today I didn’t get up until noon and I woke up hungry and ended up eating
way too much, especially too much carbs. I took Byetta (10 mcg) just before I
ate. I had 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a bowl of cheese crackers,
an apple, and a cup of coffee (no sugar in it). My blood sugar when I got up
before I ate was 116 (higher than usual). Two hours after eating this meal,
my blood sugar was 99. Five hours after eating this meal my blood sugar was
down to 84. So, now its time to take my Byetta again and eat my supper–a
hamburger, some fruit, and coffee. On days when I strictly limited carbs and
ate small portions of protein and little fat, my blood sugar wasn’t any
lower. The only difference it that I lost weight on less carbs and smaller
food
portions. Even when I ate veggies and fruits low on the glycemic index with
modest amounts of protein and low carbs and fat, my blood sugar was no lower
and often higher than when I are more carbs with my Byetta. It doesn’t seem
like avoiding carbs is all that helpful to me, except for losing weight.

Figured it out plus a Surprise in the mail!

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005

Hi….

Thanks to the people who took the time to figure out the percentages for me.
Also, I got my Byetta Welcome Kit in the mail today complete with travel
pack. I can’t wait to try it out. Today has been a bad day for me. Lots
of Nausea and headache. I finally gave in and called the Doc. She is
going to call in some kind of prescription for me. The ginger has worked
before, but not touching today’s bout. Also….I’m thinking….I don’t think I
can eat that much fat. 140 grams. That just seems like so much. The 45
carbs a day I could do pretty easily as since I’ve started the byetta, the
thoughts of sweets makes me ill. So I’m getting most of my carbs from fruit
(blueberries mostly) and Veggies. My thing is Pasta….I love it. I use the
Dreamland pasta which has only 5 digestible carbs. But the portion is like
½ cup….LOL…..I could easily eat 3 cups. So portion sizing is my down fall
I think. I know this is rambling, I’m sorry….Just sort of an off day for

Going to the 10

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005

I just got off the phone with my doctor and got approval to start the
10 pen next week, when i finish the current 5 pen I am on. I hope this
will get my numbers even better and help me lose more weight. Did
anyone experience different side effects when you switched to the 10?
Thanks!

Testing

Tuesday, February 1st, 2005

When I was first diagnosed my testing supplies were processed
differently than they are now. If I remember correctly, even though
I had a prescription from my doctor I had to purchase them and turn
the receipt in and they partially reimbursed them. They were being
processed as "durable medical" so were subject to my deductible. My
prescription was written for 5x a day but they will still only allow
me 1 box at a time so I am running to the pharmacy about every 10
days it seems…

One day the pharmacist suggested I get a new prescription and we
would see if they would go thru as a prescription rather than the
way they had been going…they did. Now I only have to pay the 20%
and they are not subject to the deductible (which went from $250 to
$1000 in one year! Right now I have United Healthcare insurance.
