Fwd: [Diabetes_And_Byetta] rash question

Saturday, December 11th, 2004

Hi Kristi,

Yes, I have experienced a rash. I actually get welts and they are
itchy. I did not want to come off of byetta so my doctor left me on
it. He gave me claritin and a creme to apply to the rash. I used the
claritin and creme for about 2 months. Now, I get a rash sometimes,
not as itchy, sometimes not itchy at all. I am not sure if my body is
working its way through the reaction or what. My diabetic teacher
has spoken with the rep from byetta and said that it should be reported
to product safety.

I can not tell what kind of a rash you have, but from experience with
my rash it has not affected my health in any way.
I do not think the byetta is giving me the numbers like I got when I
was on the 5 pen. I was also told by my diabetic teacher that I

Hypos on Byetta

Wednesday, December 8th, 2004

Well, I had my second hypo this evening. I’m only using Byetta. The
first time this happened, a few weeks ago, I had gone on a long hike, so
I attributed the hypo to that. But today I mostly sat in the car while
driving back from camping, cleaned up a bit and sat on the computer
reading all your messages. <g> For dinner, I had a buffalo burger,
including both halves of the bun, plus some green beans in tomatoes. Two
hours later, I hit 57 and dropping.

Any ideas as to what could be happening?

Hi Andrew,

I am sorry to hear of you not feeling well. As I have mentioned
before on this list I went through depression back in December. I did
not know I was going through depression. I was fortunate to have a
primary care doctor who helped me see it and get me through it. I am
still struggling with my numbers and carb intake. Just belonging to
this group, keeps me focused more than I would be, if I did not get
emails delivered to my box. It reminds me that I have to keep trying
better at my illness. I am thankful to you for pointing me in the
direction of this byetta group when I was on the regular diabetes
group. You have supported us here in more ways than one and hope you
stay active on the list with us even though you chose to come off

another alternative to fitday — sparkpeople.com

Monday, December 6th, 2004

Just to throw another choice in the mix, there’s also SparkPeople at
sparkpeople.com — it’s free, too. I like it because you can enter recipes
and "food groupings" so if, like me, you almost always have the same
breakfast you don’t have to keep entering all of the individual ingredients
every time. It’ll set up a workout program for you too if you like, plus a
bunch of other free features.

I had used fitday online for years and decided to invest in the software. I
had several problems getting it to run properly and ultimately asked for my
money back because it crashed every single time I printed. Plus, the
printout for a day’s meals is basically just a screen dump, there are no
formatting options, and you can only "dump" one day at a time — I wanted a
printout for a week to show the nutritionist. They gave me my money back
but told me to keep trying to use it. Not sure why I’d want to do that, but
they were very nice about it. You may find the standalone version more

Started Byetta

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

Hi everyone… I started my taking the Byetta last night.
Fortunately, I have not had all of the nausea and upset stomach that
some users have experienced. I have noticed that my appetite has
decreased. I also wanted to say that I have enjoyed your website and
look forward to participating in future discussions.

4 Diabetes Drugs Are Seen Raising Hope and Profit

Byetta, a diabetes drug made by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly.
About 200,000 people take the drug, introduced in June 2005.

Even as diabetes rates reach epidemic levels worldwide, four new drugs
are generating optimism among doctors as well as Wall Street analysts.

New drugs alone will not reverse rising rates of Type 2 diabetes, a
condition that affects about 20 million Americans and is closely tied
to obesity and lack of physical activity. And doctors caution that for
the foreseeable future, diabetes will remain a progressively worsening

Scientists See Success in Trials for Diabetic Nerve
Therapy

A potentially ground-breaking treatment for nerve
damage caused by diabetes has shown promising results
in preclinical and early patient trials.

A University of Manchester team has discovered that
injection of a novel therapeutic that works by
stimulating a person’s genes may prevent nerve damage
- primarily to the hands and feet - caused by the
disease.

The positive preclinical results - reported in the
journal Diabetes - are further evidence that the
