Byetta and Not eating

What happens if you take the byetta, but don’t end up eating within an hour?

I had called the Byetta 800# and asked this — they said (which didn’t
make a lot of sense to me) that the shot would force your BG levels
down even if you didn’t eat, so you’d be VERY low in the next hours.
It struck me as an odd answer, as Byetta’s written material all says
it affects insulin production in response to food.

The reason I asked the question had to do with these
cocktail/dinner/speeches dinners I need to attend. I certainly
wouldn’t carry Byetta with me. The woman at the Byetta line said that
so long as I ate some appetizers (although she wouldn’t give me a
calorie number but I’m guessing the number is 200) I’d be protected
from the lows and could then eat dinner when it was served a few hours
    later.

My other question to her was that the Byetta information said to not

take a shot after you ate. So I asked about snacks and how long you
had to wait after eating how big a snack. I was told to wait 2 hours
after a 200 calorie snack. (Which is why I guessed 200 calories for
    appetizers.)

I’m not much of a breakfast eater but my Dr wanted me to take the morning
injecting and eat. So I tried that. Unfortunately, I couldn’t eat. I don’t
normally eat until about 11 am. The Byetta didn’t give me a low and from
what I’ve read, that’s one of the nice things about it. Severeal things I’ve
read said you can take it and if you don’t eat, you won’t go low.

I finally figured out that taking it at 7 and not eatil til 11 was a real
waste of it, though, so now I don’t take it until about 10 am. I eat at
about 11 and it works fine.

I have frequently taken byetta and then not eaten for hours and had no hypo.
Sometimes it has just worked that way that I took my morning shot and had no
ability to eat. The lows warning is probably a way of the company playing CYA.

I have found that Byetta needs a meal with carbs to work. I don’t think it
would lower blood sugar by much if a person didn’t eat. I think the eating
within an hour rule is because the Byetta is more effective that way. Maybe
it’s less effective if you don’t eat until much later.

I’ve had some tooth pain the past several days and twice I’ve taken my
"morning" shot (about 11 am, I’m a second shifter) and then fell asleep for
hours (blessed pain pills) and not eaten anything at all and I had no
problems, just a couple of wasted doses.

BTW, try not to need emergency dental work the Thursday/Friday before July
    4. I swear every dental office in town is closed until next week. After a
miserable weekend I finally had to go to the hospital to get the darned
    thing taken care of.

Does with me. I was 108 when I checked, injected, did not eat, an hour later
I was 76. Happens all the time. If I don’t get enough carbs for breakfast I
will drop by the time I get to the office.

Bummer about the dental work and the holiday, Debbie. Reminds me of when I
broke my arm and wrist (badly) and had to wait three days for the surgical team
because the doctor was running the Iditerod and they had to wait until he got to
a checkpoint where he could be airlifted back to Anchorage. I lived in Alaska
back then and the world stops for the race.

Thanks everybody for the commiseration about the tooth pain. It’s somewhat
better — turned out to be a badly cracked tooth caused by nothing that I
could identify. I think they thought somebody hit me, but it’s not so.
Anyway, it couldn’t be saved so the pressure pain is gone now (along with
the tooth) and I’m left with a dull, aching pain now that for the most part
is controlled with ibuprofen and acetaminophen. My glucose levels have been
higher but I’ve been eating very badly — comfort foods that didn’t need to
be chewed — and my medication schedule has been disrupted, too. Also, no
    exercise whatsoever.

The good news in all of this is that they kept a BP monitor on me during the
surgery and even with the stress (and outright fear, I confess) my BP stayed
well below 120/70 the whole time, this on top of reducing some of my BP
meds. I know it’s due to the weight loss, which is a direct result of the
    use of Byetta.

Oooo, sorry about the cracked tooth & loss of it. That happened to me maybe 18
months or so ago - they tried to save it (abscess) and didn’t realize it had a
crack and then had to pull it - so after I went through the whole root canal
thing I had to have it pulled anyway. T

he good news is that once it is out it heals quickly and the pain subsides
pretty darn fast! I had less pain after they pulled it than during the
    treatment time.

The question then is what to do with the hole. I’ve been coping with a missing
molar because I don’t have the time (or the money) to get an implant done and a
bridge is pretty much out of the question for me because of the wierd dental
issues I seem to have. I will tend to it after I take the bar in 2007. It has
made life interesting regarding chewing, let me tell you. I hope that you have
a faster resolution to THAT problem! :)

Glad to hear your BP was good. I trust all will return to normal with eating
    and BG issues.

I had an ear infection I’ve been battling to get rid of for weeks (it threatens
and then goes away) and finally started antibiotics for it. After three days I
am finding my BG is around 90 most of the time, which means that the infection
must have been boosting it to the mid-120’s. I think I am losing weight again,
so maybe the problem was the infection. Go figure.. The problem with ear
infections is that doctors are loathe to treat them with antibiotics anymore.

    Be well! Get some rest!

I have a ? about the snack thing. I am awfully bad to "graze" while I am
cooking. Tasting bits of this and that. Should I take my shot before?

  11. Irwin Mayme Says:

I try to remember to take the shot before I start grazing, as I have an
hour window to eat. But I’ve grazed while cooking breakfast and dinner,
then taken the shot. No problems. Didn’t affect my bg at all.
