A hoodia moment
Well, after being on "spit" since March it’s appetite fighting properties seem
to have wandered off on me. I was using hoodia only now and then, but then I
stopped losing and after that I gained a couple of pounds. Hmmm, I said, and
started checking my intake more closely. Indeed, carbs were fairly low, but
intake overall was up and I felt hungry more often.
Went back on the hoodia yesterday (2 times yesterday, once today) and I’m back
to eating like I did when I started the 10 mcg spit and could slack off the
hoodia. I guess that for me the hoodia is something I will have to get used to
taking over the long haul. I’m fortunate that the extract is something that
works to help overcome the insulin resistance hungries for me.
I got off track with exercise too over the last couple of weeks - too much
sitting on my butt writing and on the train to & from Boston. I have gotten
back on track with my walking DVD (I have no idea when and why I simply wandered
away from that since I quite enjoy it).
Just goes to show that I have to be quite on purpose about what I put in my
mouth and how much I move. I did experiment with steel cut oats and while I
tolerated it relatively well I think it was part of the problem with eating
more, having more hunger and being more tired. I was going to experiment with
the barley cereal John and a few others of you recommended but I think that will
have to wait until I lose the rest of the weight I need to lose, which is about
a hundred pounds, so we’re talking a year or two here.
It seems that grains continue to be "the enemy" no matter in what shape or form
in terms of how they affect my weight and my hunger. Oh, well, it was a noble
experiment that did not get too far out of hand before I took control of my life
again. I still have no idea how anyone else with insulin resistant diabetes
manages to eat all the carb stuff so many of you do and not end up like the
Goodyear Blimp and with BG’s that are over the moon - which is what would happen
to me. I wish I could be like you (well, only the ones who can do it all with
just byetta and not a slew of other medications too) but I will not be one of ya
any time I can visualize in my future. :^(
So, that’s what’s happening from my part of the world.
Janie, how to you manage to work in 10 mile hikes into your schedule? I have to
work at it to get in a half our walk aerobics DVD.
Cheers!

As of this morning, have lost 84lbs total since 09/2003 and 41lbs this year.
That brings me to 294 - my High School weight (in 1986). YAY,
I’m in the 200’s again!
Two goals down this year - 10% of my body weight AND under 300lbs. My next
goal is 16lbs away - that will bring my total loss to 100lbs.
Long term I am looking at 220 (another 74lbs), which is still overweight for
5′8", but I’m a muscular lad and I should look right rather intimidating at
220. For that matter, if you see me walking down the sidewalk from WalMart
tonight in my jean shorts and black wife-beater with three bags of groceries
on each wrist, you’d get out of the way.(really harmless here, though).
I’ve been off the Byetta for about 4 days now with 108-120 bgs morning (had
milk right before bed last night). My PharmD bitched me out this morning and
I’m going to get ahold of my doc tomorrow or Fri and talk about dropping
back to the 5 pen. I have been doing the 10 pen once a day morning cause I
can’t remember to take anything bid. Everything has to be XR for me. I think
I want to stay on the stuff. The gastroperesis effect lasted about three
months, but I do seem to have a higher tolerance for heat this year. Could
be the weight loss and buzzed noggin, too. I don’t want to know. Anyways,
the 10 gives me nausea daily and the 5 did not, but the 10 has been
therapeutic whereas the 5 wasn’t really. We’ll try it for a month and see, I
think.

Congrats on the weight loss and the good numbers! Take a moment to pat
yourself on the back! I have gone back to the 5 pen as well as the lows on
the 10 were just too much for me. Continued success to you!

You are helping to inspire the rest of us! I know you are doing some Body
for Life are you not? I am hoping to start working out in the pool more and
more - now that it is almost ready… but I will likely wait until next week
as I have ONE more final exam to write on Tuesday - and I need to keep my
butt in the chair and study like crazy!

Went swimming with my granddaughter yesterday to teach her how to swim. I don’t
get out to go swimming very often and after doing demonstrations for a few hours
plus holding her up in the pool so she could learn floating (she got it!!) and a
few other things, I got home and my arm and shoulder muscles were sore.
Obviously, water work (resistance) would be a good thing for me.
Tough luck, as they don’t have swimming pools available in any of the cars on
the "T" - the times I’d have time to exercise. Annoying to think I have two
wasted hours spend commuting when I could be doing something else productive.
I have a friend who swims file miles a day. I now understand how she can lose
as much weight as she did. Five miles a day of swimming and five miles a day of
walking makes Linden a very healthy gal!
I need to find something I can do at home in fits and starts that will help me
get more fit. Maybe I’ll finally invest in the round weight balls for walk
aerobics.
Good fortune to all in the exercise!
