You never want that kind of news, but remember that it CAN be managed and he
can live with this for a long, long, long time with good management. The
current technology can make his life so much more bearable than just a few
years ago.

Jaqueline –
I wish you luck with your son. And I hope he does not have type 1. A
dear friend’s granddaughter was diagnosed with type 1 when she was 6.
Her mother is a nurse and has been very proactive in Mary’s care. It
was hell on everyone the first two years, with constant testing and
Mary being denied all sorts of things her brothers took for granted,
both in terms of foods and activities.
Finally, they got her into the juvenile diabetes program at Mary
Hitchcok - Dartmouth. (I don’t know where you live, but there are
probably similar programs at other major hospitals.) At the age of 8,
they put her on an insulin pump, and it has really given Mary her life
back.
So while the diagnosis would be devastating, it is a chronic
condition, and can be managed.
I wish you luck and peace.
