90…
Believe it or not, I have been listening the experiences others have using more
carbs and getting a better reaction to byetta. As ya’ll know, I have a problem
with carbs and grains. Got to looking over my allergy testing and the primary
grain allergy issues are rice, wheat and rye. I only have a tiny bump on oats
and barley. Considering I get a false +2 to sterile water because I am so
reactive, I tried a small amount of steel cut oats today.
My BG had been high (152) because I forgot my fortamet last night (bad Marsha)
but after a small serving of the steel cut oats with salt and 1/4 cup of
blueberries I tested 2 hours later and my BG was 90!
I will repeat this tomorrow morning and see if I get the same effect. I will
also have to watch and make sure I don’t end up with an asthma attack from using
grain, but if I don’t react to the steel cut oats (keep your fingers crossed for
me) then maybe I can add small amounts back into my diet.
I have previously tried the regular oats and had a bad reaction in terms of BG,
so obviously rolled oats are not "in" for me.
Oh well, one step at a time.
Lost another pound - hope I keep that pound off.
Cheers!

Marsha –
I’m proud of you! Not because you ate oatmeal as much as because ALL
of us need to consider different options when what we do doesn’t work
optimally. It takes a brave and smart person to consider something
different!
I have a lot of allergies — some are anaphylactic allergies. So I
understand your hesitancy.
You may consider as other grains quinoa and spelt. Also wild rice
since it is a plant and not a real rice. And if you are hesitant, you
can always consider muscle testing to see if you have a sensitivity.
It is a good quick check. Contact me off-line if you want more info,
it’s so off topic I doubt that others would be interested.
And so that you know that you are not the only one trying new things
– tonight I start Byetta — I primed the pen this morning. NOWHERE in
the instructions did it say how to get the needle OFF the pen. So,
being a mechanical idiot, I stabbed myself trying to work it off
before I realized it screwed off.

Marsha, I tested very positive to wheat 0ver 20 yrs ago and have always
had a terrible time with allergies during the grass season starting
after my first kid and weight gain. This year, I’ve cut my nose spray in
half and I’m having very little problems with seasonal allergies. I
asked my husband when the grass pollen would peak, and he said it
already had! My grass allergy symptoms are about 1% of what I had before
byetta. I’m in shock! It was so bad 25 years ago that I had a cortisone
shot, and that gave me relief for 2 weeks instead of the 3 months the
doc said it would.
I, too, found that byetta works best with a little carb, but not too
much! I’m winging it without insulin and meds, so I can’t eat a huge
bagel without having to cover my bg with a little humalog. <g>

Hi Marsha,
Do you also take fortamet in the a.m. along with the byetta? If so, how do
you administer it? Byetta first, then do you have a waiting time before the
fortamet? I am wandering if I am taking mine incorrectly. I do the byetta
at 5:30 a.m. Have a small bite, then around 9:00 a.m., I take prandin and
metformin, and again, a small bite of food. My bg’s seem to rise before
the prandin and metformin. Then after lunch, my bg’s seem to take a hypo
dive quite often. Maybe I haven’t figured out the combo for me. Thanks,
Lanie

Hi Lanie,
I take my horse pill 1000 mg fortmet and 7 a.m. and 7
p.m. I take my byetta when I can. On M/F I take it
at 6 a.m. on T/W/Th I take it about 7 a.m. on Sat/Sun
I take it closer to 8 a.m. or 9 a.m because I don’t
eat until later (I don’t have to run off somewhere).
I take the p.m. shot when I am home - which varies -
so sometimes I take it at 6:30 and sometimes I take it
at 9 p.m because I don’t want to drag it with me all
day and into the evening. I take it before I eat,
though…
Fortamet is a pill. I can take it at school, even
during a class. I can take it on the train if I have
to. I’m not likely to inject during a class or on the
T, although it could be exciting if I did. (waggle
eyebrows)
I don’t see how our hardy travelers manage. I admire
them if they can manage a better schedule than mine!
I’m sure if I was more consistent it would be better.
