How often do you normally check?

I’ve been checking my bg the same way I have all along:

FBG first thing in the morning before I eat or drink anything

    Right before each meal

    Two hours after each meal

    Right before bed

And anytime I eat something new, don’t feel good, feel low, etc.

I test 3-4 times a day: fasting in the morning, before lunch, 2 hrs
after lunch, before dinner, 2 hrs after dinner and at bedtime. I vary
the times, but focus more on testing after meals to check for a
    postprandial rise in bg.

Baahahaha, I wish! I pay cash for mine to the tune of …well, a lot of
money. :( It’s a pain but to know what’s going on I have to test. It sucks,
    eh?

    Paul–

There are a number of ways of getting strips for about 50 cents each
instead of close to a dollar each (for the major brands).

First, some of the on-line diabetes wholesalers sell them cheaper. If
you google "diabetic test strips" and "glucose testing" and a few
others, you’ll get slightly different lists.

Second, there is e-bay, where I tend to buy my strips. Check the
description for the expiration date. My last two purchases (Freestyle)
were $86 for 200 strips and $37 for 100 strips. Since these are
auctions, look for odd closing times (early mornings eastern time seem
    to work well.)

The strips are NIB (new in box) and the seals are on. I have heard
that the reason people sell them cheaper on ebay is because if people
have a prescription plan that covers strips, they get their doctors to
    write a monthly scrip equivalent to testing 6 - 10 times/day instead
of 1 - 2 times a day. That allows people to get multiple boxes for one
co-pay. People sell their excess strips and use the $$$ to pay for
    their copays on other drugs.

In addition, if you join a diabetes clinical trial, they often give
you a meter and strips for free for the length of the trial.

    Absolutely it’s insurance fraud. I don’t do it, and I don’t sell
strips. HOWEVER — I bet that SOME of the strips on ebay are legit,
and make the assumption that the ones I am buying are from people who
    put them their legitimately.

I’m very fortunate in that I have a family doctor who is gung ho in his
patients helping themselves. He will prescribe as many strips as we
need. Currently, he gives us both (hubby and me) 300 a month each,
especially since I’ve started on Byetta and tend to have lows if I’m not
careful. I test anywhere from 4 or 5 times per day to 10 or 12…
depending on what I’m going through, how I’m feeling, and if I’m eating
something that I’m not sure how my body reacts. I was on low carb for so
long, that I really don’t know any longer how my body reacts to certain
carbs, especially under Byetta. So I test to find out… 1 hour, 2
hours, 3 hours, 4 hours. Then I know. But again, I know I couldn’t do
that if I didn’t have such a great doc.

I’m very lucky in that I keep my Lifescan rep’s laptop working so I get
meters and strips regularly. I even try out the new stuff for her and the
    office’s diabetes team.
