Analysis: Next big diabetes players ID`d

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) — A variety of pharmaceutical and
biotech companies will make presentations on diabetes treatments they
are developing at the American Diabetes Association meeting beginning
Friday, but analysts said the most significant therapies to come out of
the meeting will be Merck`s Januvia and Novartis` Galvus.

‘The biggest items are two drugs from Merck and Novartis,’ Decision
Resources analyst Donny Wong told United Press International.

Merck`s Januvia and Novartis` Galvus are the first drugs in a class
called DPP-IV inhibitors and both have blockbuster potential.

The drugs have a similar mechanism of action to Eli Lilly`s Byetta, but
they are administered orally whereas Byetta has to be injected.

In addition, the Merck and Novartis drugs offer the advantages over more
traditional medications of stimulating production of insulin in response

I would strongly consider this as well, for the same reasons. But I wonder
about that last line: "which may lead to better blood sugar regulation, and
not causing weight loss." Maybe I’m just reading it wrong, or maybe it’s a
    typo.

Of course by the time they’re approved I hope (plan) to be at a healthy
weight so (desired) weight loss won’t be an issue.

Andrew, I don’t mind the spit in pill form, but I’m not going to trade
the weight loss until I lose it all. The weight that is, not my mind. <g>
