I’ve noticed something really strange this last month, and have been
actively testing it this last week. I’m one of the folks using the 5 pen
3X daily, mostly because the 10 pen was causing lows (40-55 range)
almost every evening. The 5 pen has been working great spacing it out
for the last 2 or 3 months until a few weeks ago. I started having the
evening lows again. When your blood sugar falls in the 40 or 50, it
feels terrible. I started to check my sugar prior to the evening shot
more carefully, and realized that if it’s a little too high (over 180),
that’s when I crash… about 45 to 60 minutes after I eat. And it
doesn’t seem to matter what I eat carbwise… low, medium or high…
it’s gonna crash. But if my blood sugar is normal, as around 100, it
doesn’t do it. Morning blood sugars don’t seem to be affected like this,
nor afternoon. Just evening for some reason.
So I started thinking that maybe enough beta cells have been repaired
(thanks to Byetta) to the point that Byetta is making my pancreas
produce too much insulin in response to higher pre-prandial ranges. It
can produce more insulin now than pre Byetta days, and now the 5 pen is
just as effective (short range) as the 10 pen was. Does anyone see my
logic in this, or could this just be wishful thinking on my part? It
sure encourages me to watch my afternoon carb intake, as I hate the
evening lows that accompany them!

I dunno, but I get lows pretty much daily - 60s are when I really notice it.
I keep regular soda - usually ginger ale for the Lizard Love - around and
sip on that. Seems to help and raise my level to 80s or so.

I only wish I had. I think I will suggest it when I go in for my checkup
in July, if nothing else than for a baseline. I love the idea of Byetta
healing our pancreas enough to produce more healthy Beta cells, and more
insulin response on it’s own. I hope it’s not wishful thinking, but what
else could explain what’s going on?
I’ve lost 21 pounds since starting Byetta, and only need to lose 7 more
to get to my goal.. I’m just not sure if that’s what made the difference
or not. I still get spikes (around 200, but not 300 or 400 like pre
Byetta days) if I overindulge, but for the most part, my BGs are pretty
darn good.

Cheryl,
Any chance you had a C Peptide test done before you started Byetta? If
so, have another doe and compare the results.

187 fasting (ate horribly yesterday - can you say "Garlic Bagel Chips" in
quantity? Yeh, I know.) - an hour or so later after a shower and changing a
tire, I’m a 52. Damn. Two orange glucotabs (yummy! I could suck on these all
day!) and a few sour gummies and I’m trying to get back slowly (I love sour
candy and NOTHING is sour enough - wife makes a game of trying to find me
sour candies).
